FC Groningen 2-3 Fortuna Sittard result, stats and report

Philip Brittijn's 79th-minute strike gave Fortuna Sittard a 1-0 win at Willem II, condemning the hosts to a fourth defeat in their last five Eredivisie matches and leaving serious questions about their ability to compete at this level.

PEC Zwolle silenced the home crowd at FC Groningen with a thoroughly professional 3-0 victory, goals from Thom van Bergen, Jorg Schreuders and Tygo Land doing the damage in a display that was far more controlled than their recent results suggested.

Ajax put five past Fortuna Sittard at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion, with Julian Brandt, Thilo Kehrer, Davy Klaassen and Kasper Dolberg among the scorers in a dominant away display. Fortuna's consolation from substitute Anthony Descotte was nothing more than a footnote.

GO Ahead Eagles dominated every statistic that mattered but could only rescue a 1-1 draw against FC Groningen at home, with Søren Tengstedt equalising in the 82nd minute after Brynjólfur Willumsson's first-half goal threatened to hand the visitors all three points.

Fortuna Sittard came to Groningen, dominated possession and territory for ninety minutes, and still needed a Justin Hubner own goal in the 87th minute to seal a 3-2 win. FC Groningen competed harder than the scoreline suggests, but they could not hold what they had.

NEC Nijmegen have not kept a single clean sheet in their last ten Eredivisie matches. Fortuna Sittard have scored in every one of theirs. Sunday evening at 19:00 has the makings of a proper contest.

FC Groningen have conceded in every single Eredivisie match in their last ten, and Ajax arrive on Sunday having scored seventeen goals in their last five. This is not a good combination if you are from Groningen.

Fortuna Sittard host Twente on Saturday evening with both sides in decent nick, but the numbers behind Sittard's defence tell a worrying story. Twente arrive knowing exactly where to hurt them.
