Villarreal 3-1 Napoli: Yellow Submarine Sink Napoli's Champions League Hopes With Dominant Display

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Villarreal 3-1 Napoli. That is the scoreline. Write it down. Because that result tells you everything you need to know about where these two clubs are right now in this competition.

Napoli came into this game having lost to Arsenal in their only other Champions League outing this campaign. Villarreal had lost to Borussia Dortmund in theirs. Two teams with their backs against the wall. One of them responded. One of them did not. End of.

The Basics Were Won in the First Half

Amir Rrahmani put Napoli ahead with a right-foot shot in the eighth minute. Fine. Napoli had their moment. They competed for eight minutes and then they stopped. That is not an exaggeration. Villarreal turned this game on its head inside three minutes in the middle of the first half and Napoli had no answer to it.

Georges Mikautadze equalised for Villarreal with a left-foot finish in the 23rd minute. Then Santiago Mouriño, assisted by Gerard Moreno, made it 2-1 to Villarreal with a right-foot shot in the 26th minute. Two goals in three minutes. That is desire. That is a team that refuses to accept being behind in their own stadium. Napoli froze. Villarreal smelled blood and they went for it. The thing is, that is what the basics look like when a team actually wants to compete.

Mikautadze was then booked for a foul in the 33rd minute and ultimately came off at the break between the 60th and 63rd minute mark. By that point, the damage was already done.

The Numbers Back Up What the Eyes Saw

Listen, I do not need to wade through spreadsheets to know which team wanted it more. But the numbers in this match are damning for Napoli regardless.

Villarreal had 17 shots to Napoli's 11. They had 10 shots inside the box to Napoli's eight, and they created three big chances to Napoli's two. Crucially, Napoli missed two of their big chances. Villarreal missed none. That is accountability, or rather the absence of it from the Napoli side.

Villarreal also hit the woodwork twice. Napoli hit it zero times. The home side were dominant in dangerous attacks, registering 58 to Villarreal's 33. They attempted 22 dribbles to Napoli's nine. They put 18 crosses into the box to Napoli's six. Napoli had more possession at 52 per cent, but possession without penetration is just expensive keep-ball. It means nothing if you are not doing something with it.

Napoli committed 15 fouls. Villarreal committed eight. Three Napoli players were booked. Giovane went in the 55th minute, Kevin De Bruyne in the 62nd, and Giovanni Di Lorenzo in the 85th. That level of indiscipline tells you the mentality on the night. When a team is frustrated, when they know they are being outworked, they start fouling. That is not a coincidence. That is a team that lost the battle and then lost the discipline along with it.

Napoli's Injury Situation Is Not an Excuse

Napoli came into this match carrying significant absences. They had a major injury absence that is not expected back until January 2027, and a string of moderate and minor issues across the squad. Several players were listed as out around the time of this fixture.

The thing is, every club in this competition has injuries. You deal with it. You set your standards and you compete with what you have. Napoli did not do that here. Villarreal also had injury absences, including a long-term issue dating back to December 2025. They still found a way to win 3-1 at home. Accountability means performing regardless.

The Second Half and the Subs

Napoli threw bodies at it after the hour mark. Noa Lang and David Neres came on in the 60th minute, and Leonardo Spinazzola followed in the 61st. Stanislav Lobotka and Lorenzo Lucca arrived in the 72nd minute. Five changes in twelve minutes. That tells you the manager knew his team was not at the races. When you are making five changes before the 75th minute, you are chasing the game, not controlling it.

Villarreal made their own changes, bringing on Juan Foyth in the 68th minute and Ayoze Pérez and Sergi Cardona late in the game. The home side managed the match with composure. Napoli managed nothing.

And then, as if to twist the knife, substitute Tani Oluwaseyi scored for Villarreal in the 86th minute. Assisted by Ayoze Pérez, Oluwaseyi curled in a left-foot finish to make it 3-1. A substitute scoring a late goal to put the result beyond any doubt. That is a squad that is together. That is standards being maintained even when the match is already won.

What Does This Tell Us

Villarreal had a plan and they executed it. They were aggressive, they were disciplined in attack, and when Napoli equalised early they did not panic. They responded within minutes. That is the attitude of a team that knows what it is doing in this competition.

Napoli had more of the ball and less to show for it. They conceded three goals. They committed fifteen fouls. They had three players booked. They missed their big chances. They had 11 shots and one goal, and that goal came in the eighth minute before Villarreal had properly woken up.

Napoli lost to Arsenal before this. They have now lost to Villarreal. The desire is not there. The basics are not being executed. When a team concedes twice in a three-minute window in the first half and then offers almost nothing of substance for the remaining hour, that is not a tactical problem. That is an attitude problem. End of.

Villarreal deserve credit. Three goals, a dominant second-half display, and a squad that contributed through the starting eleven and from the bench. This was a proper Champions League performance from the Yellow Submarine.
