Sassuolo 1-1 AC Milan: Odenthal Cancels Rabiot Strike As Milan Drop Two Points

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

AC Milan went to Sassuolo on Sunday afternoon and came away with a point. On paper, that looks reasonable enough. In practice, it is the kind of result that should bother a club with Milan's standards. They had the form. They had the quality. They drew. End of.

What Happened

The match stayed goalless through the first half, though it was not short of incident. Milan lost Matteo Gabbia to injury inside twenty minutes, with Koni De Winter coming on to cover. Sassuolo made their own forced change just after the half-hour, bringing on Cas Odenthal for Fedde Leysen. By the forty-first minute, Pervis Estupiñán had picked up a yellow card for a foul. Koni De Winter followed him into the book in first-half stoppage time. Estupiñán then did not reappear for the second half. Luka Modrić came on in his place at the break.

The thing is, you cannot afford to go into a second half two men down on yellow cards with the game still level. That is basic game management. It tells you something about how Milan were operating out of possession in that first half.

The Goals

Milan broke the deadlock on sixty-three minutes. Adrien Rabiot finished with his left foot, assisted by Modrić, who had been on the pitch for less than twenty minutes. Credit where it is due. Modrić sees the game. That was a proper assist from a proper player.

The lead lasted five minutes. Sassuolo's Cas Odenthal, who had come on as a substitute in the twenty-sixth minute, scored with a left-foot shot on sixty-eight minutes to make it 1-1. A substitute scoring an equaliser against you is not a tactical masterstroke from the opposition. It is a lapse in concentration from the team that should be managing the game. Milan had just gone ahead. The job at that point is simple: be compact, be disciplined, do not give them anything cheap. They gave them something cheap.

The Discipline Problem

Milan collected four yellow cards across the ninety minutes. Estupiñán and De Winter in the first half have already been mentioned. Gonçalo Ramos was booked for time wasting on eighty-seven minutes. Strahinja Pavlović was booked for a foul in stoppage time. Four yellow cards in a single match is not bad luck. That is an attitude problem. That is a group of players who are not controlling themselves under pressure.

Listen, I have no interest in excuses about the fixture schedule or who was missing. You represent AC Milan. You do not get booked for time wasting when you are drawing. That is unacceptable. End of.

Sassuolo's Numbers Tell a Story

Sassuolo dominated this match territorially. They had 59 per cent possession to Milan's 41. They completed 565 passes to Milan's 384. They had 10 shots inside the box to Milan's 4. They had 51 dangerous attacks to Milan's 30. They also missed three big chances. Three. That is the only reason this was 1-1 rather than something more embarrassing for Milan.

The thing is, Sassuolo came into this match having won two and lost two from their last five in Serie A. They had conceded nine and scored nine in that run. They had not kept a single clean sheet. Milan should have been able to manage this game. Instead, Sassuolo out-competed them across most of the ninety minutes and were only denied a win by their own wastefulness in front of goal.

Milan's Defensive Effort Was There

To be fair, and I use those words deliberately, Milan's goalkeeper worked hard. Five saves in this match. Sassuolo had six shots on target and Milan's goalkeeper dealt with five of them. Without those saves, this would have been a very different result. Credit to him. That is accountability in action. That is a player who showed up when it mattered.

Sassuolo's goalkeeper, by comparison, made three saves from Milan's six shots on target. Milan created fewer clear openings but were more clinical when they did arrive. The Modrić to Rabiot combination was the clearest example of quality in the match.

Milan's Form in Context

Coming into this match, Milan had won three and drawn two from their last five Serie A matches. They had not lost. They had beaten Lecce 3-0, drawn with both Lazio and Juventus, beaten Venezia 2-0, and beaten Torino 2-1. That is a solid foundation. Three clean sheets in five matches. Desire. Compete. Win your games.

A draw at Sassuolo is not a disaster. But the manner of it matters. You go ahead in the sixty-third minute with a quality goal. You concede five minutes later from a man who was a substitute. You finish the match with four yellow cards. That is not good enough for a club with Milan's standards and Milan's history.

The Late Stages

Milan made attacking changes. Alphadjo Cissè replaced Christian Pulisic on seventy-eight minutes. Ardon Jashari replaced Yunus Musah at the same time. Omari Hutchinson came on for Samuel Chukwueze on eighty-five minutes. For all that activity, Milan could not find a second goal. Sassuolo also made changes but their substitute Kristian Thorstvedt was booked in stoppage time for a foul, so neither side was covering themselves in glory at the death.

Sassuolo won 22 tackles to Milan's 17. They won 43 duels to Milan's 39. That is the basics. That is who competed harder on the day. Sassuolo out-competed Milan for large portions of this match. Milan have more quality. Quality without desire gets you a draw on a Sunday afternoon when you deserved three points.

Verdict

Sassuolo will take the point. They had the better of the match for long stretches and their goalkeeper made five saves to keep Milan level. If they had converted their big chances, nobody would have been arguing with a home win.

Milan keep their unbeaten record intact but they know this was not good enough. Four bookings, a goal conceded within five minutes of taking the lead, and a performance that relied too heavily on individual moments rather than collective standards. The desire has to be consistent. It cannot be selective. That is what separates good teams from great ones.
