Arsenal 4-2 Ipswich: Dowman Fires Gunners Into Next Round With Brace

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Arsenal won 4-2 at Ipswich in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. The scoreline flatters nobody. Arsenal were better, they were more clinical, and they did what good sides do. They punished every moment of slackness Ipswich offered. End of.

The Opening Quarter Said Everything

Seven minutes in, Max Dowman put Arsenal ahead. Right foot, composed finish, assisted by Eberechi Eze. The thing is, that goal set the tone immediately. Ipswich had not settled. Arsenal had. The standards were not equal from the first whistle.

Noni Madueke doubled the lead on sixteen minutes. Left foot. Mikel Merino with the assist. Two goals inside sixteen minutes away from home in a cup tie. Listen, if you want to talk about desire and accountability, that is what it looks like. Arsenal came to compete. Ipswich came to a football match and found themselves two down before they had drawn breath.

Kasey McAteer picked up a yellow card for Ipswich on thirty-four minutes for a foul. Not a catastrophe on its own. But a sign of a side that was already frustrated and reaching. That is never a good place to be when you are chasing a game.

The Second Half Killed Ipswich Off

Whatever was said at half-time in the Arsenal dressing room, it worked. Sixty seconds into the second half, Dowman scored again. Left foot this time, assisted by Martin Zubimendi. Two goals in the match, involved in another. The lad competed. Simple as that.

Mikel Merino added a fourth on fifty-eight minutes. Left foot. Dowman with the assist this time. The roles had reversed. The connection between those two was the story of the night for Arsenal. Four goals, and the game was already buried.

Ipswich made changes. Jack Clarke and Chuba Akpom came on at sixty-one minutes and the home side found something. Anis Mehmeti pulled one back immediately, on sixty-two minutes. Right foot. Clarke with the assist. Credit where it is due. That was a response. It showed some fight.

But the thing is, two minutes later Arsenal made their own change, sending on Theo Julienne for Bruno Guimarães. The game was managed. Arsenal were not rattled. They were in complete control of the situation even when Ipswich briefly threatened.

Chuba Akpom grabbed a second for Ipswich deep into stoppage time, ninety minutes plus one, with Leif Davis assisting. It made the scoreline look a touch more respectable. It did not change the story. Arsenal had been in command from minute seven. Ipswich's two goals came too late and too far apart to constitute genuine pressure.

What The Numbers Tell You

Arsenal had 59 per cent of the ball. They attempted 585 passes and completed 521 of them at an 89 per cent accuracy rate. Their attacking output was superior. They created four big chances and missed just one. Ipswich created one big chance. One.

Arsenal had six shots on target from twelve total. Ipswich had three from eight. The conversion rate for Arsenal was ruthless. Every shot on target in the first half went in. That is not luck. That is execution of the basics at a high level.

Ipswich won 53 duels to Arsenal's 42 and made 26 tackles to Arsenal's 15. They competed physically. The desire was there in patches. But desire without quality and discipline in front of goal is not enough at this level. You have to be able to do both. Ipswich could not.

The yellow cards tell a small story too. Ipswich picked up two. Arsenal picked up none. When a team is chasing and frustrated, the cards follow. It is a symptom of a side that was always reacting rather than dictating.

Dowman Was Outstanding

Two goals and an assist. Right foot and left foot. Composed in the box twice and then selfless enough to play the final ball for Merino's goal. That is a complete night's work from a centre forward. He competed for every ball. He made himself available. He put the work in and he got his rewards.

Listen, you do not need to overcomplicate this. When a striker scores twice and assists once in ninety minutes, he has done his job and then some. Dowman was Arsenal's best player on the night and it was not close.

Ipswich's Problems

Ipswich had won their one previous Carabao Cup match this campaign, beating Leicester 3-1. So they came into this with some confidence in the competition. They went 2-0 down inside sixteen minutes and that confidence evaporated. They never truly recovered.

The sending off of McAteer at sixty-nine minutes as a substitution suggests the yellow card at thirty-four minutes was already a concern for the manager. They could not afford to go down to ten men. The game was already lost but the tactical decisions reflected a side that had been beaten mentally well before the final whistle.

They will point to the two goals and say they gave it a go. Fair enough, to be fair. But 4-2 with both Ipswich goals coming after the match was decided is not a gallant performance. It is a consolation. There is a difference.

Arsenal Move Through

Arsenal were professional. They were clinical. They had the ball, they used the ball well, and they scored their goals at the right moments to kill the tie. Max Dowman and Mikel Merino were outstanding. The team as a whole showed the kind of attitude and accountability you need to progress in cup competitions.

Ipswich gave it everything they had in spells. But everything they had was not enough. Arsenal were simply better on the night in every area that matters. Goals, chances, composure, basics. They ticked every box. Ipswich did not. That is the game.
