Inter 2-1 Fiorentina: Thuram and Zielinski Penalty Seal Late Comeback Win

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Inter 2-1 Fiorentina. That is the scoreline. Simple enough. But the manner of this result tells you everything you need to know about the difference between a team that competes until the final whistle and a team that does not.

What Happened

Fiorentina took the lead on 65 minutes. Alejandro Jiménez Sánchez put the ball in the net with a right-foot shot, assisted by Nicolò Fagioli. That should have been the platform to see the game out. It was not. Inter hit back with two goals in the final minutes. Marcus Thuram scored in the 90th minute with a left-foot shot, assisted by Andy Diouf. Then, in the seventh minute of added time, Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty to win it. Inter had been pounding away all afternoon. Eventually the door gave way. End of.

The Stats Do Not Lie

Listen, I do not need anyone to tell me what happened here by looking at the numbers. But when the numbers confirm exactly what you saw with your own eyes, you use them. Inter had 33 total shots. Fiorentina had 7. Inter had 26 attempts from inside the box. Fiorentina had 3. Inter put 11 shots on target. Fiorentina managed 2. Inter had 63 per cent of the ball. They created 142 attacks to Fiorentina's 59.

The thing is, Fiorentina's goalkeeper made 8 saves. Eight. That is not defending. That is survival. You cannot keep doing that at this level. At some point, the shots stop missing. And in the 90th minute, they stopped missing.

Inter also hit the woodwork once. They had 24 key passes to Fiorentina's 4. They completed 503 passes at 91 per cent accuracy. Fiorentina completed 265 at 79 per cent. The attacking intent from Inter was relentless. Fiorentina had no answer to it over 90 minutes. A lead scored against that kind of pressure is a lead that needs defending properly. It was not.

Fiorentina's Defensive Display Was Unacceptable

I will give Fiorentina this. Their goalkeeper kept them in it for a long time. But a keeper cannot win a match by himself. The basics of defending, holding a lead, seeing a game out, that has to come from the whole team. Fiorentina gave up 88 dangerous attacks. They conceded 6 corners. Inter delivered 38 crosses into the box. You cannot hold a lead when you are absorbing that kind of pressure without doing the basics right. You have to be organised. You have to desire it. Fiorentina did not show enough of either.

Viery came on as a substitute at 51 minutes and was booked for a foul at 70 minutes. Then Fiorentina made four more changes in the final twenty minutes, including bringing on Dodô, Wilfried Gnonto, Beto, and João Mário. That is five substitutions in total. But the changes made no difference to the outcome. When a team is that outgunned in terms of attacking intent, rotation alone fixes nothing. You need attitude. You need accountability. Fiorentina had neither in sufficient quantities when it mattered most.

Fiorentina came into this match having lost three of their five previous Serie A matches and keeping zero clean sheets across all five. Not one. Every single match, the opposition scored. That tells you about the standards at the back. It should not be a surprise that Inter eventually got through.

Inter Were Patient. Too Patient at Times.

The thing is, Inter were not flawless here either. You do not take 33 shots and only score twice without leaving something on the table. They had a penalty in added time and needed a 90th-minute goal to rescue the situation. For a team of Inter's quality and with that level of territorial dominance, this game should have been put to bed before Fiorentina scored.

Inter made five substitutions of their own. Federico Dimarco came on at 77 minutes for Alessandro Bastoni. Petar Sučić replaced Henrikh Mkhitaryan at 78 minutes. Piotr Zielinski came on for Hakan Çalhanoğlu at 78 minutes. Matteo Lavelli replaced Nicolò Barella at 85 minutes. Zielinski, within minutes of coming on, converted the winning penalty. That is what freshness and desire look like. He came on and made a decision count. That is the accountability I want to see.

Marcus Thuram was the man who hauled Inter level in the 90th minute. Left foot, finished. That is a striker doing his job when the team needed him most. You cannot ask for more than that from a centre-forward. He competed. He stayed alive in the match. He was rewarded.

Form Context

Inter came into this match with four wins and one draw from their previous five Serie A matches. Fiorentina came in with one win, one draw, and three losses from their five. The form pointed in one direction. The match ultimately followed that direction, even if the route was unnecessarily complicated.

Fiorentina lost to Como by 3-1 and to Genoa by 2-1 in their two most recent Serie A matches before today. They drew with Napoli 1-1 before that. A team in that kind of form, with no clean sheets to their name, coming to face a side with Inter's attacking output, needed a perfect defensive performance. They were nowhere near it.

The Bottom Line

Inter got the win they deserved. The scoreline flatters Fiorentina. A team that had 2 shots on target should not be taking the lead and certainly should not be making it competitive until the 90th minute. Inter created enough to win this match three or four times over. They were sloppy in front of goal at times, but they kept pressing, kept competing, and eventually the goals came.

Fiorentina need to look hard at their defensive standards. They had two players reported as out with injury coming into this game. That makes organisation even more critical. You cannot absorb 88 dangerous attacks, face 33 shots, and expect to hold on. The desire to defend as a unit simply was not there. That is unacceptable when you have a lead to protect. Inter win it. They deserved it. End of.
