Genoa 2-1 Fiorentina: Osmajic and Messias Blitz Hands Struggling Viola Another Defeat

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Genoa 2-1 Fiorentina. Write it down. Because coming into this one, nobody gave them a prayer.

Four defeats on the bounce. Zero clean sheets in five Serie A matches. Three goals scored across those same five games. This was a Genoa side that had shipped ten goals and looked like a team waiting to be put out of its misery. Then they went and did something about it.

Fifteen Minutes. Two Goals. Match Settled.

The thing is, Genoa did not wait around. Milutin Osmajic put them ahead in the seventh minute with a right-foot finish, assisted by Mikael Egill Ellertsson. Eight minutes later, Junior Messias made it two, finishing from the left with Osmajic returning the favour as provider. Genoa had done more damage in a quarter of an hour than they had managed in chunks of their previous five outings combined.

That is not an overstatement. That is accountability in action. You want to talk about desire? Two players who actually competed from the first whistle, took their chances, and gave their side something to defend. The basics. Done properly.

Fiorentina's response in that opening period was dismal. Their attitude going into those early exchanges was all wrong. Two yellow cards before the half-hour mark, one for Luca Ranieri on 15 minutes and one for Christ Inao Oulaï on 21 minutes, told you everything about a side rattled and undisciplined. Both were cautioned for fouls. You are already two goals down and you are giving away free kicks and bookings. Unacceptable.

Fiorentina Dominated the Ball and Did Next to Nothing With It

Here is where it gets embarrassing for Fiorentina. They finished the match with 63 per cent possession. Four hundred and seventy-six passes to Genoa's 274. Eighty-five per cent passing accuracy against Genoa's 76. They had 112 attacks to Genoa's 71. They had 74 dangerous attacks to Genoa's 29.

Listen, none of that matters if you cannot score. Fiorentina created zero big chances. Zero. Genoa created three and missed one. That is the difference between a side that competed with purpose and a side that moved the ball around nicely and achieved nothing.

Fiorentina had 13 shots in total. They put three on target. Their goalkeeper made only two saves all match. Genoa's keeper made three. The numbers do not lie and they do not flatter Fiorentina here. You can dominate possession all afternoon. If you have no end product, it is theatre. Nothing more.

The substitutions at half-time told their own story. Fiorentina's manager took off both booked players, Oulaï and Ranieri, bringing on Alieu Njie and Viery at the interval. Within fifteen minutes of the restart, Viery had a yellow card of his own. Same problem, different player. That is a standards issue. That is a squad-wide attitude problem. End of.

The Own Goal That Changed Nothing

On 73 minutes, Johan Vásquez put the ball into his own net to give Fiorentina a 2-1 scoreline. Credit where it is due, Fiorentina kept going and eventually forced the moment. But let's be honest about what followed.

Genoa's response to conceding was to dig in. Five yellow cards for Genoa in the final stages, including a booking for Samuel Wiafe for time-wasting on 85 minutes and one for Vitinha in added time, tells you they were fully committed to protecting the result. Some will call it cynical. I call it knowing what matters. You are 2-1 up late in the game after coming into it without a win. You hold it. You compete. You do what is necessary.

Fiorentina, for all their possession and all their running and all their desperate searching after that own goal, could not find an equaliser. Their attacking threat was not enough. They hit the woodwork once. They mustered three shots on target across the entire ninety minutes. That is not a team that deserved a point.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Genoa, this is significant. Going into the match they had taken one draw and suffered four defeats across their last five Serie A matches. They had scored three goals and conceded ten. A team like that does not suddenly rediscover itself without something shifting in the dressing room. Whether that shift holds is another question. But today they competed. Today they showed desire. Today they executed the basics when it mattered most.

Osmajic was sharp. Messias was clinical. Ellertsson contributed where it counted. Genoa made fewer long passes than Fiorentina (55 to 36 in Fiorentina's favour, which reflects the defensive posture they adopted after going two up), won 47 duels, made 8 interceptions and 23 tackles. They worked. They earned it.

For Fiorentina, this is another problem to add to the pile. Across their last five Serie A matches before today, they had managed one win and one draw alongside three defeats. They had shipped twelve goals. Today they came to Genoa, a side on a terrible run, dominated the ball and left with nothing. Their defensive fragility was exposed inside 15 minutes and they never recovered.

The substitutions coming on at the 80th and 81st minute marks, Dodô and Pedro Gonçalves thrown into the mix, felt like panic rather than plan. Fiorentina had a long-term injury absent before kickoff. That is context but it is not an excuse. The players on the pitch had the ball all afternoon and did not do enough with it.

The Verdict

Genoa 2-1 Fiorentina. A performance built on two moments of genuine quality in the opening quarter, followed by ninety minutes of absolute commitment to defending what they had. Is it pretty? No. Is it effective? Two goals. Three points. You tell me.

Fiorentina had every statistical advantage that should matter and threw it away because they lacked the sharpness and the composure in front of goal when it counted. Standards have to be higher than this. The attitude in those early exchanges, the bookings, the inability to create a clear chance until the game handed them an own goal, it is not good enough.

Genoa took their opportunities. Fiorentina did not. That is football. Simple as that.
