Derby 1-1 Wrexham: Rathbone Earns Point But Derby's Standards Remain Unacceptable

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Derby 1-1 Wrexham. Write it down. A team that has won one of their last five Championship games just drew with a side that got hammered 6-0 by West Ham United ten days ago. That tells you everything you need to know about where Derby are right now.

The Basics Were Not There From Derby

Listen, Szmodics scored a good goal in the ninth minute. Right foot, assisted by Mohammed Fuseini, and Derby had every reason to go and control the game. They did not. They sat back, invited pressure, and let Wrexham grow into it. That is not a tactical problem. That is a desire problem.

Derby managed just one corner in the entire match. One. Wrexham had eight. The thing is, corners are not fancy. They are a product of pushing forward, winning the ball high, and forcing the opposition back. Derby could not do any of that. They managed four shots inside the box all game. Wrexham had ten. When the away side is doubling your number of shots inside the box at your own ground, you have a standards problem. End of.

Three yellow cards as well. Alex Mowatt, Sondre Langås, and Ryan Hedges all booked. That is ten fouls committed by a side that was supposedly sitting deep and protecting a lead. If you are going to be cynical, at least be organised. Derby were neither.

Wrexham Did Not Cover Themselves in Glory Either

Now, before anyone starts applauding Wrexham, let us be clear. This is a side that shipped six goals to West Ham United. They came here with 55 percent of the ball and still only found the net once, in the 88th minute. Oliver Rathbone deserves credit for the finish, assisted by Kieffer Moore, but that late equaliser flatters them.

Wrexham created one big chance all game. One. They had 24 total crosses and only five were accurate. They had 13 shots but just three on target. That is not clinical. That is a team that recycled the ball well enough to look threatening without actually being threatening for most of the 90 minutes.

Kieffer Moore picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute for a foul. He had just assisted the equaliser. That kind of indiscipline after doing something positive sums up the level of accountability on display from both sides.

The Substitution at 15 Minutes Tells a Story

Wrexham pulled Oliver Rathbone off in the 15th minute, replacing him with Josh Windass. That is a bold call from their manager. It says something was badly wrong. Then Rathbone came back on, which means one of those early substitutes had to come off. The man who came off on 15 minutes scored the equaliser on 88. You could not write it. But the fact that a player was removed that early in a match your side eventually drew tells you the chaos running through Wrexham as a unit.

Derby made their big moves at 72 and 84 minutes. Rhian Brewster for Szmodics, Henrik Meister for Fuseini. Then Oscar Fraulo and Lars-Jørgen Salvesen in the 84th minute. Four changes in the final quarter of an hour when you are trying to protect a lead. That is panic. A team with a clear structure and real belief in what they are doing does not throw four men on in the last 15 minutes and still concede. You have to hold what you have. Derby could not do it.

Derby's Form Is Unacceptable

In their last five Championship matches before today, Derby won one, drew one, and lost three. They scored four goals and conceded seven. Today they scored early and still could not win. Their one clean sheet in that five-match sample came in their only win, a 2-0 result against Portsmouth. Every other game, they have leaked goals. A side with that defensive record and that level of attacking output cannot afford to surrender leads in the 88th minute.

The thing is, Derby had 23 interceptions in this match. Twenty-three. They were active. They were working. But working hard and working smart are two different things. You can intercept the ball all day and still concede if your shape collapses late on. Attitude without accountability gets you nothing.

Wrexham's Form Tells a Complicated Picture

Wrexham came in with two wins, two draws, and one loss from their last five Championship matches. That 0-6 defeat to West Ham United is the obvious blemish. The 3-0 win over Millwall before it shows what they can do when the desire is there. Two draws either side of the West Ham result suggest a side that lacks consistency in the basics. They compete on their good days. On the bad ones, they get torn apart.

Today was somewhere in the middle. They did not compete fully for 90 minutes. They found a way to not lose. There is a difference between those two things.

The Bet and the Result

The under 2.5 goals selection came in. Two goals, both teams scored, and it finished 1-1. That is what the numbers pointed to and that is what happened. The BTTS No selection did not land. You take the wins where you find them.

The Wrexham win selection was always a stretch at that confidence level. A 41 percent probability is not conviction. I backed the under and I was right. That is the one that mattered.

What Needs to Change

Derby need to stop conceding late. It sounds simple because it is simple. You score in the ninth minute at home. You have 81 minutes to protect that lead. You do not do it. That is not a system problem. That is accountability. Players on the pitch in the 88th minute have to compete for every second metre. Derby's players did not do that today.

One win in six Championship matches is unacceptable at this level. The basics have to improve. Desire has to be there for the full 90 minutes, not just the opening exchanges. Derby got punished for letting their standards drop. They will keep getting punished until that changes.
