Arsenal 2-0 Everton: Konsa and Gabriel Sink a Toothless Blues at the Emirates

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Arsenal 2-0 Everton. Write it down. That is what happens when one team comes to compete and the other comes to survive. The problem for Everton is they could not even manage that.

The Tone Was Set Early

Ezri Konsa put Arsenal in front after seven minutes, finishing with his right foot from a Viktor Gyökeres assist. Seven minutes. That is all it took to expose exactly what Everton came here to do, which was nothing. When you concede that early, you have to respond. You have to show something. Everton showed very little.

Arsenal went into this match with four wins from their last five in the Premier League. Everton came in with one win from their last five. The form told you everything. The match confirmed it.

Everton Had No Answer to Arsenal's Dominance

The numbers from this game are damning for Everton. Arsenal had 20 shots to Everton's eight. Arsenal registered 12 shots inside the box to Everton's six. Arsenal had 68 dangerous attacks to Everton's 30. Arsenal had 12 corners. Everton had three.

The thing is, this was not even Arsenal at their relentless best. They were comfortable. They were in control. And Everton's players looked like they had been told the result before kick-off.

Everton did win more duels on the day, 50 to 40. And their dribble success rate was higher. But those are consolation statistics. They mean nothing when you cannot create, cannot score, and cannot stop the team you are playing against from winning the match at a canter.

Everton had one big chance created all game. They missed it. Arsenal created two big chances and missed none. That is the difference between a team with standards and a team without them.

Gabriel Puts the Game to Bed

The second goal came on 68 minutes. Gabriel headed home from a Ben White assist. Right foot shot, tucked away. Game over. Arsenal had already made three substitutions at that point, bringing on Riccardo Calafiori, Bruno Guimarães, and Kai Havertz. The match was being managed. Everton had no response.

Arsenal hit the woodwork once on top of their two goals. They had 17 key passes to Everton's seven. They generated 103 attacks to Everton's 66. At 58 per cent possession, Arsenal suffocated Everton in the way a top side suffocates a team that refuses to press high or take any kind of risk going forward.

Everton's Discipline Was a Disgrace

Three yellow cards for Everton. Vitaliy Mykolenko booked at the end of the first half for a foul. James Garner booked in the 66th minute for an argument. James Tarkowski booked in the 79th minute for a foul. David Moyes himself booked on the touchline in the same minute for an argument.

Listen, when your manager is getting booked on the sideline at 0-2 down, that tells you everything about the frustration in that dugout. But frustration is not an excuse. It is a symptom. The symptom here was a team that had no plan and no way back into the game.

Mykolenko was substituted off in the 74th minute after his booking, replaced by Hayden Hackney. Brennan Johnson came off for Tyler Dibling in the 72nd minute. Changes made in desperation, not in design.

Myles Lewis-Skelly was booked for Arsenal in the 58th minute and then substituted off at 68 minutes. Mikel Arteta picked up a touchline booking in the 64th minute as well. But none of that disrupted Arsenal. They stayed composed. They stayed in control. Arteta's side had one yellow card to Everton's three. The discipline gap was as wide as the performance gap.

Head to Head Tells the Story

In the two meetings between these clubs in this data, Arsenal have won both. Arsenal have scored three goals across those two meetings. Everton have scored none. Arsenal have kept clean sheets in both. That is not a coincidence. That is a pattern. Everton have not found an answer to this Arsenal side and today they did not come close to finding one.

What Arsenal Got Right

Everything, frankly. Konsa scored early and gave the team a platform. The midfield controlled the tempo. Arsenal's 508 passes to Everton's 368 tells you who was setting the terms. The accuracy was almost identical, 87 per cent for Arsenal and 86 per cent for Everton, but Arsenal were doing it in areas that mattered. Seventeen key passes. Five accurate crosses. Twelve corners. Constant pressure from areas that count.

The substitutions at 68 minutes brought on quality. Guimarães into midfield. Havertz up front. Calafiori at the back. Arteta rotated with purpose and the scoreline was already settled. That is the sign of a squad that has depth and belief.

What Everton Need to Fix

The thing is, this was not a case of Everton being unlucky. They were second best in every department that matters. One big chance missed. Three goals conceded across two meetings with Arsenal this season without reply. A manager booked on the sideline. Players picking up yellow cards for arguments when the game is already lost.

Desire and accountability. Those are the basics. Everton's players need to look at this performance and ask themselves hard questions. Losing 0-2 to Chelsea the week before, drawing with Hull City before that, and now this. The form going into this match was poor. The performance did not suggest anything is being fixed.

David Moyes will have his own answers for what went wrong. But the basics were not there. You cannot keep a clean sheet without competing. You cannot score without creating. Everton did neither convincingly enough to trouble a side that was, at times, barely getting out of second gear.

Verdict

Arsenal were professional, controlled, and clinical when it mattered. Konsa early, Gabriel late, clean sheet taken. Four wins from five in the Premier League. The Emirates was comfortable territory for a team that looks like it means business.

Everton were, in a word, unacceptable. Not because they lost. You can lose at Arsenal. But you cannot show up the way they showed up today and call it a performance. End of.
