Burnley 2-2 Charlton: Mesik Stuns Turf Moor in Injury Time as Clarets Drop Two Points

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Burnley 2-2 Charlton Athletic. Tuesday night at Turf Moor. Two points dropped in the most avoidable way possible. If you want to know why standards matter in this division, watch the last ten minutes of this game and ask yourself how a side leads twice and still cannot close it out.

The Basics of What Happened

Jacob Bruun Larsen put Burnley ahead on 36 minutes. Right foot, assisted by Josh Laurent. Clean enough. Charlton responded through Kayne Ramsay on 50 minutes, assisted by Lloyd Jones, and suddenly the home side had a problem. Largie Ramazani put Burnley back in front on 57 minutes, Igor Julio with the assist. That should have been the platform to see the game out. It was not.

In the 90th minute, six minutes into stoppage time, Ivan Mesik came off the bench and buried a left-foot shot to make it 2-2. Harvey Knibbs got the assist. Mesik had only been on the pitch since the 75th minute. That is the kind of thing that follows a team around when they do not defend their lead with conviction. Unacceptable. End of.

Charlton Had No Business Getting Anything Here

The thing is, look at what Charlton brought into this game. Across their three most recent Championship matches, they had drawn with Bristol City 1-1, lost to Cardiff City 1-3, and drawn 0-0 with Portsmouth. No wins in five Championship matches. Two goals scored in those five games. A side that had managed to score zero goals in two of their last five outings came to Turf Moor and left with a point. That tells you everything about Burnley's defensive standards on the night.

Charlton did not create this draw through dominance. They created it through Burnley's inability to manage a game. The stats show Charlton had 54 per cent possession, which is respectable, but Burnley had 18 shots to Charlton's nine. Burnley had 51 dangerous attacks to Charlton's 37. Burnley won more duels. Burnley had more key passes. On almost every attacking measure, the home side looked more threatening. And they still could not protect a lead. That is not a tactical problem. That is a desire problem.

Burnley's Shot Volume Means Nothing Without Accountability

Eighteen shots. Four on target. Two goals. I don't need a laptop to tell me that is wasteful. Burnley had 15 attempts that either missed or were blocked, including 11 off target. They created one big chance. They missed it. Charlton created four big chances and missed three of them. The difference is Charlton buried one of theirs when it mattered most, right at the death.

Listen, you can point to Charlton's Conor Coventry picking up a yellow card on 62 minutes, and Igor Julio getting booked for Burnley on 66. You can point to the substitutions, with Burnley bringing on Armando Broja and Marcus Edwards at 71 minutes to try to push on. It made no difference to the back end of this game. The door was left open and Charlton walked through it.

Burnley's Form Is a Concern

Before tonight, Burnley's last five Championship matches read: a 4-0 win over Watford, a 1-1 draw with Derby, a 1-3 loss to Swansea, a 1-1 draw with Wrexham, and a 1-2 loss to Bristol City. One win in five. That Watford result flatters them. Strip it out and there is very little to suggest this is a side with the consistency you need to compete seriously in this division.

Both teams scoring in four of Burnley's last five Championship matches tells its own story. The 4-0 win over Watford was the only clean sheet in that sample. If you cannot keep the opposition out, you had better be clinical in front of goal. Tonight proved they are not. Two goals from 18 shots against a Charlton side that arrived without a Championship win in five outings. That is not good enough. The attitude in the final stages, when the result needed protecting, fell short of the standard required.

What Charlton Should Take From This

To be fair to Charlton, and I mean that sincerely rather than sarcastically, they showed something tonight. Their passing accuracy was strong at 81 per cent. They made 24 tackles, winning 15 of them. They worked hard across the pitch. Their issue coming into this game was a lack of firepower, two goals in five matches, and they have not solved that problem structurally. But the mentality to keep going at 2-1 down and find an equaliser in stoppage time through a substitute is the kind of thing that builds belief.

Mesik, on the pitch for 15 minutes, scored the goal. Knibbs, on for 16 minutes, provided the assist. Charlton's manager got those substitutions right. Burnley's manager, conversely, needs to ask hard questions about why his side could not manage a one-goal lead in the final half-hour of a home Championship fixture.

The Bottom Line

Three signals were put forward for this match. Under 2.5 goals lost, with four goals scored. Both teams not to score lost, which was always going to be the outcome given how both sides were defending. Charlton to win lost, though Charlton at least showed the desire to grab something.

The model got the result wrong, but the logic was sound given Charlton's form coming in. What nobody could fully account for was Burnley's failure to close the game out. That is a human problem. A standards problem. A question of whether this Burnley squad has the mentality to grind out results when a game is there to be won. Tonight, they did not. Two points gone. A home point that felt like nothing when the final whistle went. Burnley need to look at themselves hard this week, because the basics of seeing out a lead are not optional in this division.
