Charlton Win 2-0 at Vicarage Road: Watford's Alarming Slump Continues

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Watford 0-2 Charlton Athletic. Write it down. Stick it on the wall. Because that result tells you everything you need to know about where these two clubs are right now.

Charlton came to Vicarage Road in decent shape. One loss in their last five Championship matches. Four draws and a defeat, yes, but they had not been getting turned over. They were compact. Hard to beat. They had kept clean sheets in two of those five games. Watford, on the other hand, had shipped thirteen goals in five matches going into this one. One win. Four losses. A defence that has been an open invitation to every side they have faced.

The thing is, when you look at those numbers, this result should surprise nobody. It did not surprise me.

Charlton Do the Basics. Watford Do Not.

Charlton won this game because they competed harder. The stats back that up. They won 67 duels to Watford's 52. They made 12 interceptions. Watford managed three. Three. In a home game where you are desperate for points. That is not a tactical problem. That is an attitude problem.

Watford had five yellow cards by the end of the match. Danny McNamara, Myron Boadu, Iker Bravo, Oliver Skipp, Tyreece Campbell, Conor Coventry and A. Mwamba all picked up bookings across both sides, but Watford's discipline was a mess from the first whistle. Five yellows on your own side in a match you need to win. That tells me players are chasing the game, frustrated, and not thinking straight. That is what a bad run does to a dressing room.

Skipp was taken off at half time. Coventry was gone at 62 minutes. When you are losing a game and you are pulling your midfielders for disciplinary reasons, you have lost control of the match.

Charlton Were the Better Side from the First Minute

Look at the shots. Charlton had 22 total attempts. Watford had 14. Charlton put 10 shots on target. Watford put three on target. Three. Their goalkeeper was called upon eight times and kept them in it as long as he could, but you cannot keep a clean sheet with that level of output from your own attacking players.

Watford created big chances. Three of them. They missed all three. That is what happens when confidence is gone. The legs are there but the belief is not. You get the chance and something in your head tells you it is not your day. It probably is not, given what has happened to this side in recent weeks.

Charlton missed one big chance and still won 2-0. That is clinical. That is professional. That is a team that knows what it is doing.

The Goals Told the Story

Luca Kjerrumgaard put Charlton in front on 58 minutes with a right-footed finish. It was the goal this match deserved at that point. Charlton had been the better side and they got their reward. Kjerrumgaard was then replaced by Mamadou Doumbia on 76 minutes, but the damage was done.

Jordan Zemura had come on as a substitute in the 66th minute. He was booked on 79. Then, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, he scored with his left foot, assisted by Rocco Vata. A substitute scoring in stoppage time to make it 2-0. That is the sort of thing that happens to teams in bad form. It is not bad luck. It is what you bring on yourself when your standards drop.

Watford had pulled McNamara and Coventry before the hour mark. They threw on Sonny Carey, Charlie Kelman and Harvey Knibbs. None of it changed the picture. Charlton were comfortable. They were not going to concede. They had 40 per cent clean sheet rate in their last five. They looked every bit of it here.

Watford's Defensive Record Is Unacceptable

Thirteen goals in five Championship matches going into this one. Now fifteen in six. Not one clean sheet in that run. None. Zero. Charlton had a clean sheet rate of zero on their travels coming in, and even they kept one here without breaking sweat.

Watford put 20 crosses into the box and only eight of them were accurate. That is a lot of noise for very little outcome. You can see what they were trying to do. Get wide, get the ball in, find a head. But when you have created three big chances and missed all of them, and your goalkeeper has had to make eight saves, the problems go deeper than just a bad day in front of goal.

Listen, I am not going to stand here and tell you Watford have no ability. They had 95 attacks. They had 45 dangerous attacks. They had more possession in equal measure, 50-50 with Charlton. They were in the game territorially. But territory means nothing if you cannot put the ball in the net and you cannot stop it going in your own.

What Charlton Got Right

Charlton were disciplined with the ball. A 77 per cent pass completion rate. They recycled well. They did not give Watford anything cheap. Their interception count of 12 compared to Watford's three tells you they read the game better and worked harder without the ball.

Three yellow cards to Watford's five is also telling. Charlton stayed composed. They competed without losing their heads. That is a team with some organisation and some accountability within the group.

The thing is, this was not a performance of a team that only draws. They came here and they won. They were better than Watford in every measure that matters on a football pitch. Desire. Execution. Basics. End of.

Where Does This Leave Watford

One win in six Championship matches. Fifteen goals conceded. No clean sheets. A dressing room that is clearly struggling with confidence and discipline. Someone inside that club needs to stand up and demand more from these players, because what is happening at Vicarage Road right now is not acceptable at any level of professional football.

Charlton go away from here with three points and a clean sheet. A solid afternoon's work. For Watford, the questions are mounting and the answers are not coming.
