Venezia 1-0 Napoli: Akor Adams Stuns Napoli as De Bruyne Misses Penalty in Serie A Shock

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Nobody gave Venezia a prayer going into this one. Five straight Serie A defeats, fourteen goals conceded, zero clean sheets. Napoli came to the Laguna with Kevin De Bruyne in their squad and 71 per cent possession over the course of the afternoon. The result was Venezia 1-0 Napoli. Football is a wonderful and occasionally baffling game.

Adams Does the Damage Early in the Second Half

The thing is, this match was not as mad as the scoreline suggests when you look at how Venezia set up. They sat deep. They absorbed. They competed. Akor Adams put them ahead in the 49th minute, finishing with his right foot after a move involving Simon Sohm. One goal. One assist. That was Venezia's entire attacking contribution of note. It was enough.

Venezia made nine saves. Their goalkeeper was outstanding. Napoli had ten shots on target and got nothing from any of them. When you hit ten shots on target and still lose, you need to look at the basics of taking your chances. End of.

De Bruyne's Penalty Miss Summed Up Napoli's Day

Kevin De Bruyne came off the bench in the 54th minute, brought on alongside Rasmus Højlund and Alisson Santos as Napoli chased the game. Within fourteen minutes he had his hands on a penalty. This was the moment. Napoli had a route back into the match handed to them on a plate.

He missed it. Minute 68. De Bruyne, a player of that calibre, stepping up at 0-1 down in a match Napoli had dominated from start to finish, and he could not put it away. That is unacceptable at any level. It does not matter who you are. You take that responsibility, you deliver. He did not deliver.

Napoli had 29 total shots in this match. Twenty-nine. They had 12 corners. They had 149 attacks. Venezia had ten interceptions to Napoli's four, and 35 duels won apiece. The desire and the attitude from the home side was exactly what you want to see from a team with their backs against the wall. Napoli had all the territory and none of the accountability when it mattered most.

Venezia's Defensive Effort Was Exceptional

Listen, I am not going to sit here and pretend Venezia controlled this match. They had 29 per cent possession. They had zero corners. They attempted 310 passes to Napoli's 733. This was a siege, plain and simple.

But the basics were right. Venezia blocked 12 Napoli shots. They made nine saves. They won 12 tackles, taking eight of them cleanly. They kept their defensive shape and they competed for every second ball. That is not a lucky performance. That is a performance built on attitude and organisation. When you are asked to defend your goal for large portions of a match, you do it or you lose. Venezia did it.

Napoli also had five offside calls go against them, which tells you the defensive line was being held with discipline. That does not happen by accident. Somebody was doing their job on that pitch and enforcing standards in the backline.

Napoli's Substitutions Could Not Change the Story

Napoli made four changes in total, with a triple substitution at the 54-minute mark bringing on De Bruyne, Højlund, and Alisson Santos. Matteo Politano followed in the 63rd minute. Then Mathías Olivera at the 82nd. Fresh legs, quality players, plenty of time.

The problem was not the players on the bench. The problem was that Venezia's goalkeeper and backline simply would not buckle. Napoli had 21 key passes in this match. Twenty-one. Venezia had six. The difference in creativity was enormous and it still was not enough. That tells you everything about Venezia's collective defensive effort and everything about Napoli's inability to execute when it counted.

Two big chances created for Napoli, two big chances missed. You cannot ask for more opportunity than that in a tight match and fail to take either of them. The accountability has to sit with the players who had those moments.

Venezia's Discipline Was Tested But Held

Venezia did not have a clean afternoon in terms of discipline. Toma Bašić picked up a yellow card in the 61st minute after an argument and was substituted off at the 71st. Kike Pérez received a yellow card of his own in the 80th minute, also for an argument. When you are holding on to a lead and defending deep, you cannot afford to give referees reasons to intervene. The bookings were a concern.

But Venezia held on. They saw it out. Five substitutions from the home side in total kept legs fresh when it mattered most. The commitment from every player who came on was clear. No one on that pitch switched off. In a team that had lost five Serie A matches in a row going into today, that kind of resilience is not nothing. It is the basics of what a professional football team is supposed to deliver.

What This Means Going Forward

For Venezia, this is a result that proves they can compete at this level when the attitude is right. Their recent form had been troubling. Five losses, fourteen goals conceded. Today they kept a clean sheet against a Napoli side with far greater resources and quality. That is a standard to build on. Whether they do build on it or not will depend on whether today was a one-off or a genuine shift in mentality.

For Napoli, this is a result that demands serious reflection. Their Serie A form across their five completed matches shows two wins, one draw, and two losses. They are not a team that has been running away with things. Losing to Venezia, a side without a point to show from their last five before today, is the kind of result that exposes problems with desire and concentration. Napoli had every advantage in this match. They used none of them to find the net.

De Bruyne's missed penalty will get most of the attention. It deserves some of it. But the real story is simpler than that. A team with nothing to lose competed harder than a team with everything to prove. Venezia wanted it more. That is a results business problem for Napoli to sort out, and they need to sort it quickly.
