Lens Win 3-1 at Troyes Despite Dominated Possession as Nkada and Thauvin Combination Punishes Struggling Home Side

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Lens came to the Stade de l'Aube and left with three points they deserved. Final score: Troyes 1-3 Lens. The home side had 59 per cent of the ball, made 540 passes, and still managed to concede three goals. That tells you everything you need to know about standards and accountability in this Troyes squad right now.

How It Unfolded

The match was shaped early. On 13 minutes, Troyes defender Adrien Monfray put the ball into his own net. That is the kind of start that tests your mentality. It tests your desire to respond. Troyes did not respond the right way.

Lens pressed their advantage. Timothé Nkada put the visitors 2-0 up on 26 minutes, finishing from a Mouhamed Diop assist with his left foot. Two goals down before the half hour. At home. In front of your own supporters. Unacceptable. That is the only word for it.

To their credit, Troyes pulled one back just before the break. Odsonne Édouard scored in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, with Florian Thauvin picking up the assist. It gave the home side a lifeline going into the dressing room. The question was whether they had the attitude to use it.

They did not. Ruben Aguilar put Lens back in front with a header on 55 minutes, again assisted by Thauvin. That was the match done. Troyes had their moment at half-time and squandered it. Lens were ruthless when it mattered.

The Possession Problem

Troyes had the ball. A lot of it. 59 per cent possession, 540 passes, 84 per cent accuracy. They had ten key passes and eight accurate crosses. On paper, they were the better team in terms of ball retention. But football is not played on paper.

The thing is, having the ball means nothing if you cannot hurt the opposition with it. Troyes managed seven shots on goal in total, with only three on target. Lens had 13 goal attempts and put five on target. Lens created three big chances to Troyes's two. And Lens, crucially, took their opportunities. Troyes did not miss any big chances, because they barely created any that threatened a decent goalkeeper.

Lens did it with 41 per cent possession. They were compact, they were dangerous in transition, and they executed their basics when the moment came. That is what winning football looks like. It is not complicated.

Troyes's Defensive Basics Are a Disaster

Let us look at Troyes's recent form in Ligue 1. In five completed matches, they have won one, drawn none, and lost four. They have conceded 13 goals in those five games and kept zero clean sheets. Zero. Not one match where the back line held firm. That is not a run of bad luck. That is a structural problem with effort and organisation at the back.

The own goal from Monfray on 13 minutes was a microcosm of a wider issue. Against Strasbourg in that same recent window, Troyes conceded six. Six goals in one match. The defensive situation is beyond concerning. It needs fixing at its core, and fixing fast. Three major injury absences in the squad since August have not helped, but injuries are not an excuse for the basics falling apart.

Lens had 53 dangerous attacks to Troyes's 37. They had 12 interceptions to Troyes's eight. The visitors competed harder in the moments that counted, and that showed on the scoreboard.

Thauvin's Influence and Lens's Clinical Edge

Florian Thauvin was at the centre of Lens's most dangerous moments. He picked up two assists in this match, setting up both the Édouard goal and the Aguilar header. Before he was withdrawn at the 67-minute mark, he had made Lens a genuine threat every time they moved forward.

The combination of Thauvin and the movement around him gave Troyes's defence problems they simply could not solve. Lens created three big chances and missed two of them. On another night, with better finishing, this scoreline could have been more emphatic. Troyes's goalkeeper made four saves to keep it at three.

Nkada, who scored the crucial second goal, was replaced at the hour mark by Kandet Diawara. Lens managed the game well from that point, using their substitutions sensibly while Troyes made six changes of their own in an attempt to find a way back into the match. It never came.

Discipline Issues Late On

Four yellow cards were shown in the match, two to each side. Lens midfielder Junior Diaz was booked for a foul on 76 minutes, followed immediately by Renaud Ripart for an argument on the same minute. Troyes substitute Samson Baidoo and Amadou Haidara also saw yellow in the second half.

The Lens cards suggest a degree of frustration at protecting a lead rather than any loss of control. The Troyes cards, particularly from substitutes brought on to change the game, suggest a team that was running out of ideas and starting to lose composure. Neither is a good look, but one of those scenarios is far more damaging than the other.

The Bigger Picture for Troyes

This result fits the pattern. Troyes are struggling badly in Ligue 1 right now. One win from their last five completed matches, with four losses. Their attacking output is poor, their defensive record is alarming, and the injury situation gives their manager a difficult hand to play.

But injured players do not give up defensive shape. Injured players do not switch off for own goals inside the first quarter of an hour. The attitude and the standards have to be right regardless of who is missing. Right now, they are not right. And until that changes, results like this one will keep coming.

Lens, for their part, did what good teams do on the road. They stayed organised, they punished mistakes, and they got the three points. Simple. Effective. Professional. Troyes could learn something from watching that back.
