Gruda's Strike Earns Leipzig 1-0 Win as PSV Squander Penalty and Waste Big Chances

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

RB Leipzig 1-0 PSV Eindhoven. Tuesday night at the Red Bull Arena. One goal. One missed penalty. One team that did what was necessary, and one team that did not. That is the story. End of.

Perisic Misses the Penalty. PSV Never Recover.

The thing is, this match was there for PSV to take. They had a VAR review involving Armando Obispo in the 16th minute. Three minutes later, Ivan Perisic stepped up to the spot with the chance to put his side in front in a Champions League away fixture. He missed it. That is unacceptable at this level. You get a penalty in the 19th minute on the road in Europe, you score it. That is the basics.

PSV had 57 per cent possession. They had 466 passes to Leipzig's 350. They won 63 duels to Leipzig's 39. They attempted 19 total crosses and made six accurate ones. They had 13 shots in total and seven on target. The numbers tell you PSV were in this game. The scoreline tells you they did not deserve to win it. Those two things are not a contradiction. Desire without delivery is nothing.

Leipzig Do the Basics. Gruda Makes the Difference.

Leipzig were not spectacular. They did not need to be. They had 57 per cent possession against them and still found a way to win. That tells you about mentality. That tells you about accountability when your backs are against the wall.

The goal came in the 75th minute. Brajan Gruda, with a left-foot shot, gave Leipzig the lead. It was a clean finish and it was deserved on the basis of what Leipzig were prepared to do without the ball. They made five saves. They had 12 tackles and won 12 of them. They kept their shape, they competed, and when the moment came, they took it. Gruda was substituted off a minute later, replaced by Rocco Reitz. Job done. Get him off. Sensible management.

Leipzig had 11 total shots of their own. They had five on target and created three big chances, matching PSV in that regard. Critically, PSV missed all three of their big chances. Leipzig missed two of theirs but did not miss the one that mattered most. That is the difference between a winner and a team that flies home empty-handed.

PSV's Discipline Cost Them.

Listen, you cannot keep giving away free kicks and collecting cards in a match you need to win. PSV picked up two yellow cards. Sergiño Dest was booked for a foul in the 43rd minute. Armando Obispo, already involved in that VAR incident early on, picked up a yellow card in the 85th minute for another foul. That is poor. That is a lack of composure when the pressure was on.

PSV also had six offsides called against them. Leipzig had none. That is not a coincidence. That is PSV's attacking line gambling, trying to find shortcuts, and getting caught out repeatedly. You cannot build anything on that. You cannot win anything on that.

Leipzig's Injury Situation Is a Real Concern.

Before this match, Leipzig had six players listed as unavailable, including one who has been sidelined since June with a major injury and one facing a suspension until January 2027. That is a significant chunk of your squad missing. Yet they found a way to get three points in the Champions League. That tells you something about the attitude in that dressing room. Standards held under pressure. That is what you want to see.

PSV, by contrast, picked up an in-game injury on the night, adding to their problems as the match wore on. Leipzig had none. Fitness and durability matter. They always have. They always will.

The Substitutions and the Final Stages.

Leipzig brought on Tidiam Gomis for Rômulo in the 61st minute, freshening up their midfield before the goal arrived. After Gruda scored and came off, Rocco Reitz came on in the 76th minute to help see out the result. Leipzig also made changes at 77 minutes, with Ryan Flamingo replacing Lutsharel Geertruida and Yarek Gasiorowski Hernandis coming on for Filip Kostic. Mikkel Bro Hansen and Ayoni Santos were introduced in the 84th minute as Leipzig managed the clock sensibly.

PSV responded with their own changes. Ryan Flamingo and Yarek Gasiorowski Hernandis came on at 77 minutes for PSV's defensive structure. Mikkel Bro Hansen and Ayoni Santos followed late on. In the 86th minute, Lukas Klostermann replaced Ezechiel Banzuzi and Nicolas Seiwald came on for Ridle Baku as Leipzig locked down the result with professionalism.

There was also a VAR check involving David Raum in the 81st minute. Nothing came of it. Leipzig held on. PSV could not find a way through. A defence that was committed, organised, and prepared to work for every header. Leipzig made 23 successful headers to PSV's nine. That is not an accident. That is a team that competed when it mattered.

The Verdict.

Leipzig won because they competed harder in the moments that defined the match. PSV had the ball, had the chances, had the penalty, and did not take any of it. That is the only explanation needed. Three points for Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League. PSV head home with nothing, knowing they handed this result away themselves. No one else is responsible for that. End of.
