Osasuna 2-0 Racing Santander: Budimir Penalty and Osambela Late Strike Seal Comfortable Home Win

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Osasuna 2-0 Racing Santander. Write it down. That is what three points looks like. You turn up, you compete, you execute the basics, and you win. Simple.

The Match Was Over Before It Started

This one was decided early. A VAR check in the fifth minute led directly to a penalty for Osasuna, and Ante Budimir stepped up and put it away in the ninth minute. That is the kind of ruthlessness that has been missing from this Osasuna side in recent weeks. Four defeats in five La Liga matches before this game. Conceding seventeen goals in those five matches. Listen, that is not bad luck. That is a defensive unit that was not doing its job.

But on Sunday they did their job. They got in front, they organised themselves, and they made Racing Santander's afternoon extremely uncomfortable. The thing is, a settled shape after an early goal is the simplest thing in football if you have the right attitude. Osasuna had it here.

Racing Santander Had Nothing to Offer

Racing came into this match having conceded eighteen goals in their five previous La Liga outings. They lost to Celta Vigo 5-0 and to Barcelona 7-2 in that sample. Those are not results. Those are capitulations. Their defensive standards have been unacceptable and, if anything, this result was a continuation of that trend, just with the boot on the other foot.

In attack, Racing were toothless. They had one shot on target all match. One. Osasuna's goalkeeper made five saves across the ninety minutes, which tells you Racing did put some ball into dangerous areas, but when it came to actually testing the keeper with quality, they could not do it. Zero big chances created. That is not a tactical problem. That is a desire problem. You have to want to make things happen.

Racing also picked up three yellow cards and had a man booked in the sixth minute for arguing. Álvaro Mantilla was cautioned for dissent before the match had properly started. That sets the tone for your afternoon, and not in a good way. Jorge Salinas added another booking in the fifty-first minute, and Iván Martín was carded for handball in the eightieth. Discipline is accountability. Racing had none of either.

Osasuna Were Worthy Winners

The numbers back up what the eye test tells you. Osasuna had twenty shots to Racing's nine. They put seven on target to Racing's one. They created three big chances and missed one of them. They had sixteen shots from inside the box to Racing's single effort from close range. Seven accurate crosses. Fifteen key passes. This was a dominant home performance, possession or no possession.

Yes, Racing had fifty-six percent of the ball. So what. The thing is, possession without penetration is worthless. Racing completed more passes, had more attacks recorded, but they could not put the ball in the net and they could not threaten when it mattered. Osasuna sat at forty-four percent possession and still looked the more dangerous side throughout. That is called defending your lead intelligently and hitting with intent when the moment arrives.

Osasuna committed twenty-one fouls, which is high, and that will need watching going forward. You cannot afford to keep giving free kicks away at that rate. But the defensive shape held. A clean sheet when you have been shipping goals at the rate Osasuna had been is significant. It matters for confidence. It matters for standards.

The Decisive Moment in the Second Half

Ante Budimir collected a yellow card in the sixtieth minute for a foul, which left the manager no choice but to manage his involvement carefully from that point. Substitutions came in the sixty-seventh minute, with Asier Osambela and Lucas Torró coming on for Moi Gómez and Iker Muñoz respectively. Osambela justified his introduction in the most direct way possible.

In the eighty-eighth minute, with Osasuna already holding the lead, Osambela put the result beyond any doubt with a left-foot shot to make it 2-0. That is what substitutes are supposed to do. Come on, make an impact, close the game out. No fuss. End of.

The only real negative from Osasuna's perspective was the dismissal of Valentin Rosier from the action via substitution in the seventy-sixth minute after picking up a booking in the twenty-eighth. Managing cards is a basic part of competing at this level. Twenty-one fouls and two yellow cards is a pattern that will get you in trouble against better opposition.

What This Means Going Forward

Osasuna had been in terrible shape before this match. Four losses, seventeen goals conceded, zero clean sheets across those five games. This result does not fix everything. One win does not rewrite recent history. But it is a foundation. You get a clean sheet, you score twice, you win comfortably at home, and suddenly your players remember what it feels like to compete and deliver. That matters.

For Racing Santander, there is genuine cause for concern. One win, one draw, and three losses in their five-match La Liga sample, with eighteen goals conceded. They are leaking goals at a rate that is simply not acceptable for any side with ambitions of staying in this division. The attitude shown here, with the early booking for dissent and the inability to fashion anything meaningful in attack, does not suggest a group ready to fight their way out of trouble.

The thing is, football is simple. Work hard, defend your shape, take your chances when they come. Osasuna did all three on Sunday. Racing Santander did none of them. The scoreline was fair.
