Napoli 4-3 Bodø / Glimt: McTominay Brace Not Enough to Hide Defensive Chaos in Seven-Goal Thriller
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Seven goals. Three yellow cards. An own goal in the 88th minute. A header in the fourth minute of stoppage time. This was not a football match. This was a scramble. Napoli won it 4-3, and they will be relieved to have three points. But they should not be walking away from this satisfied. Not even close.
The Opening Salvo and a Familiar Napoli Pattern
Matteo Politano put Napoli in front inside the first minute. Left foot, quick and clinical. That is how you want to start a Champions League home game. The problem is what came after it. Napoli sat on the lead, lost their shape, and allowed Bodø / Glimt to grow into the match completely unchallenged.
Jens Petter Hauge equalised on 27 minutes with a right-footed finish, assisted by Sondre Fet. The thing is, Napoli had every opportunity to kill this game off before the break. They did not. Scott McTominay got them back in front on 41 minutes, Kevin De Bruyne providing the assist. Good goal. But it should never have been necessary.
Going in at 2-1 at half time felt like a warning. Napoli ignored it.
Second Half Collapse and the McTominay Response
Whatever was said at half time, it did not stick. Andreas Helmersen levelled it at 2-2 on 62 minutes, again assisted by Sondre Fet. Two goals in this match for Fet from the assist column. A Norwegian midfielder, away from home in Italy, running the show in patches. That is unacceptable from a Napoli side that came into this game having lost their previous two Champions League matches, both of them at home.
Napoli were already down to the bare bones in terms of discipline. Frank Anguissa had been booked at 48 minutes and was replaced by Stanislav Lobotka just after the hour. Noa Lang picked up a yellow card on 58 minutes before being withdrawn at 79. Then Giovanni Di Lorenzo was booked on 86 minutes. Three yellows. A team losing concentration when it matters most.
McTominay headed Napoli back in front on 75 minutes, this time with Politano providing the assist. His second goal of the night. It was a proper centre-forward header and McTominay deserved every bit of credit for it. He competed. He stayed switched on when others around him drifted.
A Chaotic Finish and Two Late Blows
With Napoli 3-2 up and three minutes of normal time remaining, it should have been over. It was not. An own goal from Odin Luras Bjortuft on 88 minutes brought Bodø / Glimt level at 3-3. Then, in the 94th minute, Sondre Fet scored with a header to make it 3-3. Wait. Let me be precise. That Fet goal, assisted by Odin Luras Bjortuft, made it 4-3 to Napoli in favour of the home side. Bodø / Glimt pulled one back to make it 4-3 on the night, with Napoli holding on.
Listen, a 4-3 win is still a win. But the manner of it should concern everyone connected with this club. Napoli conceded three goals at home to a Norwegian side. Three goals. End of.
The Numbers Tell the Full Story
Look at the statistics and it gets worse for Napoli, not better. Bodø / Glimt had 57 per cent possession. They completed 601 successful passes to Napoli's 440. They registered 15 shots in total, put six on target, and created five big chances. Their goalkeeper made five saves compared to Napoli's three. The visitors were more aggressive, more mobile, and more dangerous in open play than the home side for large portions of this match.
Napoli did win more tackles, 15 to eight, and completed more headers, 17 to eight. But those numbers tell you something too. They were defending more than they should have been. A home side in the Champions League should not be scrambling to win aerial duels that often. That is a team that has been breached repeatedly and is scrambling to stay in contact with the game.
Bodø / Glimt came into this on the back of a Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund, 1-0, in their previous fixture. They had won four of their five completed Champions League matches before tonight. They are not a team to be underestimated. Napoli underestimated them. That is accountability, and Napoli failed that test repeatedly tonight.
McTominay Was the Difference. He Needs Company.
The thing is, Scott McTominay was outstanding. Two goals, constant desire, the kind of attitude you want from a midfield player. He competed from first whistle to last. He dragged Napoli over the line almost single-handedly in the second half. But one player cannot be the entire answer every week. Napoli need more from the players around him.
Kevin De Bruyne contributed an assist, and that matters. But the defensive shape for large periods was nowhere near the required standard. Bodø / Glimt, a side that had shipped five goals to Bayern München just a few weeks ago in this same competition, should not have been allowed that kind of freedom in Naples.
Three Points. No Comfort.
Napoli had lost their two previous Champions League fixtures before tonight. Those were a 1-3 defeat to Villarreal and a 0-1 defeat to Arsenal. This win breaks that run. They needed it badly.
But a 4-3 scoreline against Bodø / Glimt at home, with a defensive performance that allowed three goals and conceded possession for the majority of the match, is not a foundation. It is a warning. Standards were not met tonight. The result saved the blushes. The performance did not earn them.
If Napoli want to compete in this competition beyond the group stage, they need to get back to basics. Defend as a unit. Hold a lead. Maintain concentration for 90 minutes. Tonight they did none of those things for any sustained period.
Win. But fix it. Now.
