Galatasaray Win 4-2 in Lille But Both Sides Have Serious Questions to Answer
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Let me tell you what happened here. Two teams with nothing to show in this season's Champions League turned up at Lille, played an open, messy game, and Galatasaray had enough about them to nick it 4-2. That is the result. That is the story. Everything else is detail.
A Fast Start That Meant Nothing
Yunus Akgün put Galatasaray ahead inside two minutes with a left-foot finish. Two minutes. Lille had not even settled into their shape and they were already chasing. That is a basics problem. You concede in the second minute of a Champions League game, that is not bad luck. That is a lack of alertness that is completely unacceptable at this level.
Lille responded well, to be fair to them. Actually, no. Not to be fair to them. They responded because they had to. Soriba Diaoune equalised in the seventh minute, assisted by Alexsandro, and suddenly we had a game. The thing is, that early goal from Galatasaray told you everything about Lille's defensive standards before a ball had barely been kicked.
Diaoune Was the Difference in the First Half
Soriba Diaoune scored twice before half-time and his second, on 39 minutes assisted by Hákon Arnar Haraldsson, put Galatasaray 3-1 up going into the break. That is a player who competed. That is a player who wanted the ball in the big moments and did something with it when he got it. You cannot ask for more than that from a forward.
Aleksey Batrakov pulled one back for Lille with a header on 44 minutes, set up by Roland Sallai, to make it 3-2 at the break. So Lille went in with a fighting chance. Two goals in the second half to draw level was absolutely achievable. The question was whether they had the desire to go and get them.
They did not.
Bentaleb Booked and Then an Own Goal. Accountability Has to Start Somewhere
Nabil Bentaleb picked up a yellow card in the 21st minute for a foul. That is a player already operating on thin ice for the remainder of the game. Then on 52 minutes, Bentaleb put the ball into his own net to make it 4-2. Galatasaray were out of sight. That sequence of events from one player sums up the entire Lille performance. You cannot give away a goal and then put one in your own net in the same game. The accountability has to land somewhere and it lands squarely on those basics not being right.
Victor Osimhen had been involved in a VAR check on 27 minutes. Nothing came of it. Then on 61 minutes, Osimhen made it 4-2 with a right-foot shot, assisted by Barış Alper Yılmaz. That was the game done. Lille were chasing four goals and had nothing left in the tank.
The Numbers Tell You What Happened
Lille had 56 per cent of the ball. They attempted 15 shots to Galatasaray's 10. They created 12 key passes to Galatasaray's 8. Listen, I do not need to overcomplicate this. Lille had more of the ball, more shots, more key passes, and lost 4-2. That tells you they were wasteful and that their defence was catastrophically poor when it mattered.
Galatasaray's goalkeeper made one save. One. Lille put five shots on target and scored twice. The Galatasaray keeper barely broke a sweat. That is where Lille's performance fell apart. They had the ball and they did nothing meaningful with it when a goal was on the line. Lille's keeper made four saves from Galatasaray's four shots on target. Every single one of those went in. Conversion that cold is ruthless. Conceding that poorly is unacceptable.
Galatasaray also had six offside calls against them. Six. That tells you they were running in behind constantly, hunting for goals, competing. Lille had two. The attitude to attack from Galatasaray was clear. They wanted more.
Discipline Was a Problem for Lille
Lille collected three yellow cards to Galatasaray's one. Bentaleb went in the 21st minute. Benjamin André followed in the 59th and was substituted off immediately after. Gaëtan Perrin picked up the third in the 89th minute. Three bookings, a sending-off area for André, and an own goal. That is not a team in control of its own standards. That is a team that lost its shape and its discipline along with the result.
Galatasaray's only booking came when Ismail Jakobs was shown a yellow on 85 minutes. By then the game was long over. They stayed composed when it mattered. Lille did not.
Both Teams Are Still Looking for Their First Win
The thing is, this result flatters neither side when you look at the bigger picture. Lille came into this having lost to Arsenal 3-0 and to Real Betis 3-2 in their two previous Champions League outings. Two losses, six goals conceded, zero wins. Their defensive record in this competition is a genuine crisis and nothing changed tonight.
Galatasaray were no better before kick-off. They had lost to Barcelona 4-1 and to Sporting CP 3-1 in their two previous Champions League matches. Two losses, seven goals conceded. Tonight they scored four themselves and kept Lille to two. That is progress of a sort. But you cannot look at a defence that let in seven goals in two games and start talking about a side that has solved its problems. They have not. They just found a Lille team that is in even worse shape defensively.
Galatasaray's Leroy Sané came on for Yunus Akgün on 76 minutes and İlkay Gündoğan replaced Batrakov on 85 minutes. Those are names that can change a game. Lille brought on Olivier Giroud from the bench in the 63rd minute and it changed nothing. When your experienced players cannot turn the tide, that is a mentality issue. End of.
The Verdict
Galatasaray competed harder when it counted and took their chances with real conviction. Diaoune with two goals, Batrakov with one and Osimhen with one. That is four different goal threats producing on the night. Lille had Diaoune's own goal going against them and could not find a response once they were two down for the second time. Their desire to compete at the highest level has to be seriously questioned. Standards in European football demand more than this. Galatasaray go home with the three points. Lille go home with nothing to feel good about.
