The substitutions worked out well enough. Mkhitaryan picked up a yellow card for an argument at sixty minutes and was taken off on sixty-two, replaced by Curtis Jones. John Stones also came off at sixty-two, Benjamin Pavard coming on. Federico Dimarco came on at seventy after Inter had decided he was fit enough to play, despite injury data suggesting he had been out since September the sixth with an expected return date that had already passed. He featured, so make of that what you will.

Idrissa Gueye came on for Udinese in the second half and scored on ninety minutes. A consolation. By then it did not matter. But the fact that Udinese kept finding ways to get the ball in the net says something about how switched off Inter's defensive unit can be when they think the job is done.

The Numbers That Tell the Real Story

But the defensive basics were not right tonight. You cannot concede three at home against opposition this limited and call it a clean performance. You just cannot. The attitude going forward was there. The desire to score was there. But the accountability at the back, the concentration when Udinese broke quickly in those opening minutes, that was missing.
