Milan 3-1 Inter: Pulisic and Moreira Sink the Nerazzurri in a Derby to Remember

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Let me be blunt about what happened here. AC Milan, carrying seven injury absences and enough problems to fill a medical ward, went out at the San Siro on Saturday evening and did what good teams do. They competed from the first whistle. They executed the basics. They won 3-1. End of.

Gone in Forty-Three Minutes

The thing is, this derby was over before half-time. Milan scored three goals in the opening forty-three minutes and Inter, for all their possession and their 19 shots on the night, never truly recovered. That is accountability. That is what happens when one side comes ready and the other does not.

Christian Pulisic got Milan off to the perfect start, heading home from a Diego Moreira delivery in the fourth minute. Simple, direct, decisive. The kind of goal that sets a tone immediately. Six minutes later, Adrien Rabiot made it two with a left foot finish, again assisted by Moreira, who was everywhere in the first half. At 2-0 after ten minutes, Inter had a mountain to climb.

Alessandro Bastoni gave Inter a lifeline with a header on twenty-two minutes, assisted by Manuel Akanji, and for a spell you could feel Inter trying to find a way back into it. They did not. Moreira, who had been pulling the strings all evening, curled a free kick in on forty-three minutes to restore the two-goal cushion right on the stroke of half-time. That was clinical. That was ruthless. That was exactly what a derby demands.

Inter Had the Ball. Milan Had the Points.

Listen, the statistics will tell you Inter dominated large portions of this match and technically that is not wrong. They had 57 percent possession. They attempted 19 shots in total with 8 on target. They had 11 corners and 31 crosses. They created four big chances. Impressive numbers on paper.

But they converted one goal from all of that. One. Milan's goalkeeper made 7 saves and the backline made 11 interceptions. Milan competed. They defended their lead with desire and they did not allow Inter to do what Inter wanted to do. The score finished 3-1. Possession does not go on the board. Goals do.

The thing is, when you miss three big chances and your opponents score three from seven shots, you do not get to feel hard done by. Inter were wasteful and Milan were ruthless. That is the difference in a derby. You do not need a laptop to see that.

Moreira's Night. Moreira's Derby.

Diego Moreira was extraordinary. Two assists and a goal. A direct contribution to all three of Milan's goals. He picked up a yellow card in the fifty-second minute for a post-goal argument, which tells you the emotions were running high, but nothing diminished what he produced before and around that moment. He was the standout player on the pitch and he made Inter look disorganised every time he had the ball.

Moreira was substituted off in the eighty-ninth minute, replaced by Omari Hutchinson. By that point the job was done and the three points were secured. He left the pitch having delivered one of the more complete individual derby performances you will see this season.

Pulisic, who opened the scoring with that fourth-minute header, was taken off in the eighty-second minute. Rabiot, who buried the second, was equally important in setting the tone in the opening exchanges. This was a collective effort built on individual quality at the right moments.

Milan's Injuries Make This Even More Impressive

Seven players unavailable for Milan going into this fixture. One suspended, six out injured, with two of those expected to be absent into February 2027. That is not a small problem. That is a squad stretched to its limits against the reigning champions of the division.

And yet the players who did take the field competed with complete commitment for ninety minutes. The defensive output tells you everything. Milan made more interceptions than Inter. They made 7 saves. They conceded one goal from 19 Inter shots. When you are missing that many bodies and you still defend like that in a derby, you have a group of players who understand what the shirt means. Standards were met. That matters.

Inter's Discipline Was Poor

Inter committed 14 fouls. Carlos Augusto collected a yellow card in the ninetieth minute for a foul, which is the sort of needless indiscipline that tells you a squad is frustrated. Moreira's yellow for the argument was understandable in the heat of the moment, but Inter's card came in stoppage time with the match already settled. That is a lack of composure and a lack of accountability. Unacceptable at that level.

Substitutes came flooding on in the final ten minutes from both sides. Inter brought on Zielinski for Calhanoglu, Dimarco for Bastoni, and Esposito for Barella among others. Milan responded with their own changes. None of it altered the outcome. The damage had been done inside the first forty-three minutes of the match.

What This Result Means

Milan head into this fixture having won three of their last five Serie A matches. Inter came in having won four of their last five. On paper, Inter were the side in better form. The head-to-head between these clubs showed Milan had won the only previous meeting in this data, 1-0 back in March. They have now won again.

The thing is, form tables and statistics exist before kick-off. After kick-off, it comes down to attitude. Which eleven players want it more. Which squad competes harder at the moments that matter. On Saturday evening at 19:45, Milan wanted it more. They led from the fourth minute and they never let it go. That is desire. That is what winning derbies is about. End of.
