Sevilla 3-1 Getafe: The Enforcer's Verdict on a Night Getafe Lost the Plot

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Final score: Getafe 1, Sevilla 3. Write it down. Let it sit. Because that scoreline tells you everything you need to know about accountability, and Getafe have none of it right now.

Getafe's Collapse Was Self-Inflicted

Getafe had 53 per cent of the ball. They had 12 shots in total to Sevilla's 11. They had 27 tackles to Sevilla's 22. On paper, the basics were there. In practice, they handed Sevilla this game on a plate, and they should be embarrassed by that.

Going into this match, Getafe had won just one of their last five La Liga matches, scoring only two goals across that sample. One win, one draw, three defeats. Conceding nine. The thing is, a run like that should light a fire under a dressing room. It should make players angry. It should sharpen standards. Instead, Getafe produced a performance that confirmed every concern you had about their attitude.

Sevilla were not exactly flying in. Two wins, one draw, two losses in their previous five La Liga matches. This was a winnable game for Getafe at home. They did not win it. End of.

The Goals Tell the Story

Kike Salas put Sevilla ahead on 19 minutes with a header, assisted by Félix Correia. A set-piece situation, a man left free at the back post. That is a basics failure. You cannot concede from a header in the 19th minute at home and expect to control a match.

Getafe spent the next fifty minutes trying to do something about it, and they could not. Then on 68 minutes, Enes Ünal made it 2-0 with a right-foot shot, assisted by Martín Satriano. Game effectively over. Satriano then turned provider and scorer, adding a third at 73 minutes, assisted by Ünal. The VAR review went Sevilla's way. Three goals. Three different goal scorers. That tells you Getafe's defence had no organisation whatsoever.

Getafe's only goal came from Orel Mangala in the 90th minute, and the circumstances around it require some comment. More on that shortly.

The Discipline Was Unacceptable

Let me be very clear about what happened on this pitch on Sunday. Getafe collected four yellow cards. They had one player sent off. One red card, to Manu Bueno at 90 minutes plus one, for a professional foul as the last man. That is a player ending his afternoon in the sin bin for stopping a goalscoring opportunity. That is catastrophic decision-making.

And that is not the worst of it. At the 77th minute, three Getafe players, Arouna Sangante, Lucien Agoumé, and Andrés Castrín, all received yellow cards for an argument. Three players. One argument. Booked simultaneously. I have played football at the highest level in England and I have never seen anything like that for sheer lack of discipline. That is not passion. That is stupidity. That is a group of players who lost their heads completely.

Sevilla were not blameless. They picked up two yellow cards and Davinchi was booked at 59 minutes after coming on at half time. But Sevilla kept their shape. They kept competing. Getafe fell apart mentally, and that cost them.

The Numbers Do Not Lie, But They Do Mislead

Look, I do not need a laptop to see what happened here. But the numbers are worth a brief mention because they reveal exactly how Getafe lost this match despite having what looked like decent control of the ball.

Getafe had 11 shots inside the box to Sevilla's six. They had four shots on target. Sevilla had five shots on target from 11 total shots and scored three of them. That conversion rate tells you Sevilla were clinical and Getafe were wasteful. Getafe created zero big chances. Zero. Sevilla created two. The difference in quality in the final third was stark.

Sevilla won 71 duels to Getafe's 60. They completed 48 per cent of their dribble attempts compared to Getafe's 18 per cent. Sevilla's players competed harder for the ball when it mattered. That is desire. Getafe had the territory. Sevilla had the desire. Desire wins every time.

Getafe Have a Serious Problem

One win in six La Liga matches now for Getafe. Two goals scored across their previous five before this game, and nine conceded. Today added another three against. Their attacking output is anaemic and their defensive standards have collapsed.

The thing is, Getafe were not overrun here. They tackled. They passed. They had possession. But they could not convert their opportunities, they conceded from basic errors, and then they lost their discipline entirely when the game got away from them. That sequence of events is not a tactical problem. It is a mentality problem.

When Gabriel Suazo went off injured at 27 minutes, Getafe lost a player early and had to reshuffle. That disruption does not explain four yellow cards and a red. It does not explain conceding a header unmarked. It does not explain three players being booked in the same argument at minute 77. Those things speak to attitude and standards, and both are currently falling well short at this club.

Sevilla Took What Was Offered

To be fair to Sevilla, and I mean that genuinely for once, they were professional. They went ahead early, defended the lead with composure, and when Getafe pushed, Sevilla found ways to hurt them on the break. Ünal and Satriano combined to make it 2-0 and then 3-0 in a five-minute spell between the 68th and 73rd minutes. That is a one-two punch that finished the match as a contest.

Sevilla had five moderate injuries listed coming into this game and were still the better side when it came to competing for the result. Whatever Getafe's circumstances, Sevilla's depleted squad outworked them. That is damning.

Orel Mangala, who came on at half time, scored the late consolation at 90 plus four with a right-foot shot. It meant nothing. Getafe were down to ten men by then, Manu Bueno's red card having stripped them of any hope of a genuine fightback.

Verdict

Getafe 1, Sevilla 3. A defeat that was coming. Getafe have the ball but not the cutting edge. They have the tackles but not the discipline. They have the possession but not the desire to turn it into something meaningful. Until those things change, results like this one will keep arriving. End of.
