Gilmour Strike Cancelled Out as Fiorentina and Napoli Share the Points in Florence

Fiorentina and Napoli could not be separated at the Artemio Franchi on Sunday morning, finishing 1-1 in a match that had more than enough in it to produce a winner. Napoli will feel the damage more keenly. They were the better side for long stretches, dominated possession, and created four big chances. They converted one. That is a problem, and it is not a small one.

First Half: Gilmour Punishes a Fiorentina Side Low on Confidence

It was a composed goal and exactly the kind of purposeful, direct play you want from a midfield player in that position. Gilmour deserves credit for arriving into the box and finishing. That is accountability in action.

Fiorentina had three yellow cards by the end of the match, with Franco Mastantuono picking one up on 42 minutes for a foul. They were struggling to cope. Napoli went into the break ahead and looking the more organised side.

Second Half: Jiménez Rescues a Point Fiorentina Barely Deserved

Napoli made two attacking substitutions just after the hour, bringing on Lorenzo Lucca for Rasmus Højlund and David Neres for Noa Lang. It was the sort of move that suggested they wanted to kill the match off. It did not work out that way.

Fiorentina equalised on 51 minutes through Álex Jiménez, a right-foot finish assisted by Cher Ndour. Give credit where it is due. Fiorentina showed some desire when their backs were against the wall. That matters. But let us not dress it up as a brilliant performance. Napoli allowed them back into it.

Fiorentina's manager threw on Beto and Pedro Gonçalves on 66 minutes, looking for the winner. Wilfried Gnonto came on at 80. They had five substitutions in total to Napoli's four, and they were chasing the game in the final stages despite having levelled. Fiorentina hit the woodwork twice. Napoli hit it once. There was chaos at both ends. It had the feel of a match neither side had full control of.

The Numbers Tell the Real Story

Look at the statistics and Napoli's superiority is clear. They controlled 58 per cent of the ball. They completed 485 passes to Fiorentina's 333. They won 47 duels to Fiorentina's 37. They made 20 tackles to Fiorentina's eight. They interceptions count was 10 to Fiorentina's five.

The thing is, none of that matters if you do not finish. Napoli created four big chances and missed four big chances. Listen, that is simply not good enough at this level. You get those opportunities against a side that has been leaking goals, you have to take them. End of.

Napoli's shot conversion was poor. Thirteen total attempts, five on target, one goal. Fiorentina had 17 total attempts, four on target, and also scored once. Fiorentina hit the woodwork twice in the second half which tells you the match was more stretched than the possession numbers suggest.

David de Gea was booked for time wasting at 83 minutes, which tells you everything about how Fiorentina were set up in the final stages. They secured the point and they were not shy about protecting it. That is fine. That is basic professionalism from a side that has been getting beaten heavily.

Napoli's Clinical Problems Cannot Be Ignored

Napoli have a clean sheet percentage of 60 per cent across their last ten Serie A matches away from home. They have conceded just ten goals in that same sample. Defensively, they have standards. The back line competes. The organisation is there.

But they have goals against them that they should not have. When you dominate a side the way Napoli dominated Fiorentina for large parts of this match and still cannot win, you have to look at the forwards and ask hard questions about desire and execution in the final third. Four big chances missed is four big chances missed. There is no way to spin that.

Luca Ranieri was booked for Fiorentina on 62 minutes and then taken off at 85. That substitution made sense. He was on a yellow and the match still had time in it. The manager managed it. Fine.

Fiorentina: A Point is Something, But Not Much

For Fiorentina, a draw at home to Napoli, against this backdrop of poor form, is not the worst result in the world. They showed some fight. Jiménez's goal had quality to it. And they created enough in the second half to have nicked it.

But the basics are still wrong at this club right now. Twelve goals against in five matches. No clean sheets. A defence that looks uncertain every time they are put under pressure. One point from a match they were second best in for long stretches does not fix any of that.

The injury list has not helped. Napoli came in with multiple players unavailable, including one player not expected back until the end of October. Fiorentina had absences of their own. Both squads are carrying problems. That is the reality of this stage of the season.

Verdict

A fair result on the balance of play but a frustrating one for Napoli. They had the tools to win this match and they did not use them. Fiorentina's point keeps them off the bottom of a bad run but changes nothing about the underlying issues in their squad right now.

Napoli need to be more ruthless. Fiorentina need to sort out their defence. Both teams left Florence with something to think about. One of them should have left with three points.
