Newcastle United Win 2-0 at Selhurst Park as Osula and Barnes Punish Toothless Palace

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle United. Write it down. Newcastle came to Selhurst Park, did their job, and went home with three points. Palace had every chance to make a game of it. They did not. That is on them. End of.

The Basics Were Not There for Palace

Look at the numbers. Newcastle had 17 shots to Palace's 10. Four on target to Palace's two. Newcastle won 16 tackles to Palace's seven. The thing is, you can dress this up however you want. Palace were second best in every area that matters when a game is competitive. They did not compete hard enough for long enough.

Crystal Palace had gone into this match having lost to Brighton 0-5 in their most recent home outing. That result should have lit a fire under them. It did not. You do not respond to a hammering by putting in a performance that gets you beaten again. That is a standards issue. That is an attitude issue. Someone in that dressing room needs to stand up and demand more.

Palace's form across their last five Premier League matches showed two wins, one draw, and two losses. Defensively, they had conceded eleven goals in those five games. That is not acceptable at this level. You cannot keep leaking goals like that and expect to be competitive. Their clean sheet percentage of twenty per cent in that window tells you everything you need to know about how solid this backline is right now. It is not solid at all.

Osula Opens the Scoring, Barnes Kills the Game

Newcastle took the lead two minutes into the second half. William Osula converted with his left foot, assisted by Jacob Murphy. Simple. Clinical. The kind of goal you score when you are sharper than the team in front of you.

Palace had a chance to respond. They did not take it. Instead, Newcastle scored again on 58 minutes. Harvey Barnes finished with his right foot, with Amar Dedic providing the assist. Two-nil. Game over. Palace needed to be brave and direct after going behind. They were neither.

Barnes was then withdrawn at 77 minutes, replaced by Anthony Elanga. That is game management. Newcastle protecting their players, keeping something in the tank. You do not make changes like that unless you are confident the points are secure. Newcastle were confident. Palace were not in a position to argue.

Palace's Discipline Compounded Their Problems

It was not just the attacking failure that frustrated. Palace picked up three yellow cards on the day. Yéremy Pino was booked for arguing at 75 minutes. Anan Khalaili followed four minutes later, also for arguing. Then Jaydee Canvot was carded for a foul deep into stoppage time. Listen, if you are losing 2-0 and your players are arguing with officials instead of concentrating on the football, you have lost the plot entirely. That is poor discipline. There is no other way to describe it.

Palace made substitutions at 62 minutes, bringing on Eddie Nketiah for Jean-Philippe Mateta and Darío Osorio for Dwight McNeil. Those changes had no impact on the scoreline. When you are chasing a game and your substitutes cannot shift the momentum, you have a problem with depth and with desire. Both are concerns for Palace right now.

Newcastle Were Not Perfect Either

This is not me standing here telling you Newcastle were brilliant. They were not brilliant. They were efficient. There is a difference. Newcastle came into this match having lost three of their previous five Premier League games, conceding twelve goals in that sample. A loss to Aston Villa 0-1 and a defeat to Coventry 1-4 were in that run. Newcastle had real defensive concerns of their own coming in.

Newcastle also had three yellow cards on the day. Nico González was booked for a foul in the 36th minute. Fabian Schär followed at the end of the first half for another foul. Lewis Hall was then carded for time wasting at 78 minutes. That last one is particularly irritating to watch. You are 2-0 up. You have won the game. Just play the football and see it out with some dignity. But it is a minor complaint when set against the three points in the bag.

Newcastle also had a VAR review involving Joe Willock at 53 minutes, shortly after taking the lead. The review did not overturn anything. The goal stood. Newcastle's lead was intact. The thing is, Newcastle will not be too bothered about the yellow cards or the VAR moment. They won. Results are what you are judged on. It is a results business.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Palace made four saves in this match. Their goalkeeper was the busiest man in the home side. That is not a platform to win Premier League games. You cannot defend your way to a point when your outfield players are not creating enough at the other end. Palace had six goal attempts and put only two on target. Newcastle had nine goal attempts and four on target. Newcastle converted twice. Palace converted zero times.

Newcastle won 21 tackles to Palace's ten. They made 13 interceptions to Palace's ten. They were more aggressive, more organised, and more switched on in the moments that mattered. Palace won 24 successful headers, which was actually more than Newcastle's thirteen. But headers without quality delivery or purpose are just statistics. They did not lead to goals. They did not lead to anything.

What Needs to Change at Selhurst Park

Palace have two wins from their last five Premier League matches. They have conceded eleven goals in that period. The basics are not being executed. The desire to compete for a full ninety minutes is not consistent enough. That is not a tactical problem. That is a mentality problem.

Newcastle had four players out with major or long-term injuries coming into this fixture. Palace also had two major injury absences. Neither side was at full strength. But Newcastle managed their situation better. They found goals. They held a clean sheet. They did the job. Palace did not.

Sunday 25 October 2026. Newcastle United win 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace have questions to answer. Whether they answer them is entirely down to the players pulling on that shirt. Accountability starts in that dressing room. It has to.
