Cagliari's Effort Without End Product
Listen, you cannot question Cagliari's desire to stay in the match. They committed to the fight. They made 14 dribble attempts, won eight corners, and threw crosses into the box with regularity. They had four offsides, which at least tells you they were trying to get in behind. But effort and desire without quality in the final third gets you nothing. Zero shots on target in a home match is unacceptable for any side with genuine ambition.
Cagliari's injury situation did not help. Four players were listed as out ahead of this fixture, including one long-term absentee not expected back until late October. That earlier meeting between the two clubs, the only head-to-head on record, saw Inter win 3-0 at Cagliari in April. The pattern held. Cagliari did better to restrict them to one goal this time, but the result was the same. Inter won. Cagliari did not score. The accountability for that, on both occasions, has to sit with Cagliari's attacking players.
