West Ham Mean Business at Home. Can West Brom's Leaky Defence Survive?

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

West Ham are doing what good teams do. They are winning football matches and not conceding goals. Three wins and two draws from their last five Championship outings, sixteen goals scored, and only three conceded. That is not a soft run of form. That is a team with standards.

The thing is, the numbers tell you something obvious here. West Ham put six past Lincoln City and six past Wrexham in that sample. They beat Swansea 1-0 when they needed to grind. They drew 1-1 with QPR and 2-2 with Millwall when it got scrappy. That tells me they can win ugly and they can win with authority. That is a complete team. Clean sheets in three of five. That is accountability at the back.

West Brom's Defensive Problem Is Not a Secret

Listen, West Brom have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last five Championship matches. Not one. Six goals conceded across that sample. That is unacceptable for any side with genuine ambitions in this division.

They have shown they can score. West Brom beat Blackburn 3-2 and beat Wrexham 2-1 in back-to-back matches going into the international break. There is desire in that. There is fight. But desire without a functioning defensive structure gets you nothing away from home against a side as clinical as West Ham right now.

West Brom also lost to Birmingham and to Wolves in that five-match window. Two 1-0 defeats. No goals. No clean sheets either direction in those games. The inconsistency is the issue. You cannot build anything on that foundation.

The Basics Will Decide This

West Ham at home, with their current defensive record, against a West Brom side that concedes in every game. The logic is not complicated. You do not need anything fancy to work this one out.

The thing is, West Ham's clean sheet percentage across these five matches sits at sixty percent. They are organised. They compete for every ball. West Brom's clean sheet percentage across the same window is zero. That gap in defensive basics will not disappear just because it is Halloween.

There is a long-term injury listed in the West Ham camp. We do not know who. That introduces a small element of uncertainty. It would be dishonest to ignore it. But one absence does not dismantle a defensive unit that has conceded three goals in five matches.

What Needs to Happen for West Brom

West Brom need to find something they have not managed in five attempts. A clean sheet, or at minimum, a controlled defensive performance. If they concede first in this ground, against this West Ham side, they are chasing the game. That suits West Ham completely. It opens space and West Ham know how to punish space. Six goals against Lincoln City tells you that.

The Baggies will need their two recent wins to mean something mentally. Beating Blackburn 3-2 when you need to grind out a result shows attitude. That matters. But attitude alone does not fix a defensive unit that has not kept a single clean sheet in this sample.

The Verdict

West Ham are the right side to back here. They are at home. They are in excellent form. Their defence is solid and their attack is ruthless when given the chance. West Brom cannot keep a clean sheet right now and are walking into the most hostile possible environment for that problem.

Back West Ham to win and keep a clean sheet. The evidence supports it completely. End of.
