Utrecht's Away Form Under the Microscope as They Travel to Groningen on Opening Weekend

Elena Santos ·

Last updated 2 August 2026. The Eredivisie is back, and the opening weekend hands us a fixture with a genuinely interesting tension running through it. FC Groningen welcome Utrecht to the Euroborg on Sunday 9 August, kick-off at 12:30 GMT, and the picture that emerges from the data is one of two teams heading in opposite directions when they leave home.

The Context: A Season Starting at Zero

The 2026 Eredivisie standings are a clean slate, every team on zero points and zero games played. So the current table tells us nothing useful. What does tell us something useful is recent form, and that is where this preview earns its keep. Groningen enter the season placed 18th in the pre-season positional ranking, which is worth noting. Utrecht sit 9th. Neither number carries the weight of competitive matches yet, but the form data from the preceding months gives us a much clearer thread to pull on.

Groningen: Fortress at Home, Fragile on the Road

Away from home, the picture is considerably less comfortable. Their last five away fixtures produced two wins, one draw, and two defeats, with six goals scored and seven conceded. The momentum slope on that away form reads at minus 0.2, a gentle but real downward trend. The real question is whether that vulnerability away from home is relevant here, because today Groningen are at home. And it is, in a roundabout way, because it tells you that their overall defensive reliability is conditional on environment.

Their last five overall shows two wins and three losses, with a BTTS rate of 80 per cent and over 2.5 landing in 80 per cent of games. The form string reads LWWLL, so they go into this having lost their last two. There is a small upward momentum slope of 0.3 attached to that overall window, which is slightly counterintuitive given the back-to-back defeats, but may reflect underlying performance improving even as results dipped.

Utrecht: Electric at Home, Inconsistent Away

Utrecht's home form is simply exceptional. Five wins from five at home, 13 goals scored, only three conceded, and a clean sheet rate of 60 per cent. Their xG numbers at home are telling: 2.29 for, 0.62 against. They are not just winning, they are controlling games and limiting opponents to very little. They average 22 shots per game at home and ten on target. That is a significant volume of threat.

But here is what nobody is asking. How does Utrecht perform when they have to leave that environment? Their away form over the last five reads two wins, one draw, and two defeats, with seven goals scored and ten conceded. BTTS has come in at 40 per cent away from home, and over 2.5 has landed in 60 per cent of those matches. The clean sheet rate away drops to 40 per cent. They are still capable of winning on the road, but the defensive solidity that defines their home performances does not travel reliably.

And that brings us to a significant complication for Utrecht. They carry four players into this fixture on the injury list. Two of those are long-term absences, having started in September 2025 and February 2026 respectively. A third long-term injury began in January 2026, and there is a further moderate injury from May 2026 still unresolved. Four players out, three of them long-term, with no expected return dates listed for any of them. That is not a trivial squad situation, and it is worth watching how it affects their shape and depth at the back on Sunday.

What the Model Says

The signals are relatively cautious across the board, which is appropriate given the context. This is a new season, the standings are blank, and the sample sizes on form carry the usual early-campaign caveats.

The Betting Picture

I would leave the totals markets alone here. The edges on both Under 2.5 and BTTS No are too thin to build a case around, and the data is genuinely mixed. Groningen score freely at home, Utrecht have four injuries in the squad, and we simply do not know how the first game of a new season shakes out in terms of intensity and tempo.

The Verdict

Groningen's home strength is real and should not be dismissed. They have averaged ten goals in their last five home matches and their xG numbers suggest they are generating genuine quality. Utrecht bring better overall form into this fixture, a higher quality of underlying numbers, and a positive momentum slope, but they also bring four injury absences and an away record that is considerably more ordinary than their home record.

This feels like a game that could be decided by a single moment. The market is essentially calling it close, and on the available evidence, that feels right. Groningen to score is a near certainty based on their home form. Whether Utrecht can keep them out long enough to nick something on the road is the central question of this fixture, and the injury list makes that harder to answer with confidence.

Worth watching: how quickly Utrecht's defensive shape settles in the absence of three long-term absentees. If they look compact in the first twenty minutes, they are a genuine threat. If there are gaps early, Groningen's home crowd and scoring record will do the rest.
