There are bad runs of form. Then there is what Bolton Wanderers are currently producing. Four losses from their last five Championship matches. Eleven goals conceded. Two clean sheets across a six-match sample, and one of those was a goalless draw with QPR. The thing is, you can dress that up however you like. The numbers do not lie and neither do my eyes. Bolton are in trouble.

Bolton's Defence: An Open Door

Let me be direct. Conceding eleven goals in five matches is not a defensive system failing. It is a group of players failing to do the basics. Shape, concentration, desire to keep the ball out of your net. Bolton lost to Millwall by four goals without reply. Sheffield United put three past them. West Ham put three past them. But pull back to the ten-match sample and a very different picture emerges. Two wins and a draw across ten matches. Seven defeats. Twenty goals conceded. That longer run includes losses to Wolves, Southampton, Swansea, Bristol City, Portsmouth, Millwall, and Wrexham. Seven defeats in ten Championship matches. That is not a team with a bad patch. That is a team with a problem.

So which Stoke turns up on Saturday? The one that demolished Charlton or the one that lost seven times in ten? That is the question. And I will tell you this, playing Bolton right now might actually be the ideal fixture to find some form if you are Stoke. Bolton are there to be scored against.

The Basics Are the Problem for Both

Listen, I am not going to pretend this is a match between two sides playing attractive, confident football. It is not. This is two teams in the Championship who are both struggling with accountability at the back and consistency across the pitch. The difference is that Stoke showed a genuine burst of quality over their most recent five matches, while Bolton have shown nothing to suggest they have fixed the core issues.

The thing is, matches like this get decided by mentality as much as anything else. Which set of players actually wants to compete for ninety minutes. Which group has the desire to impose themselves and which group folds under pressure. Bolton's recent record suggests they have not answered that question well. Stoke's record over the last five suggests they might have found something.

I am not going to overthink this. Bolton are leaking goals and have lost four of their last five in this competition. Stoke, whatever their longer-term problems, come into this having won two of their last five and having beaten Charlton four-nil recently. That kind of result takes a bit of confidence with you into the next match.

The home advantage counts for something at this level. Always does. But right now Bolton's home form is not giving anyone reason to weight that heavily. They lost to Lincoln at home. That happened.

I am backing Stoke City to win this match. Not because Stoke are a great side. They are not. But because Bolton look like a team that has not sorted out their basics, their shape, or their attitude defensively. And Stoke, in recent weeks at least, have shown the ability to take their chances and grind out results. That is enough for me. End of.
