Willem II 0-1 Fortuna Sittard result, stats and report

Philip Brittijn's 79th-minute strike gave Fortuna Sittard a 1-0 win at Willem II, condemning the hosts to a fourth defeat in their last five Eredivisie matches and leaving serious questions about their ability to compete at this level.

Ajax put Willem II to the sword with a commanding 5-1 win at home, with two goals before the break setting the platform for a second-half rout that exposed every weakness in the visitors' defensive standards.

Ajax put five past Fortuna Sittard at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion, with Julian Brandt, Thilo Kehrer, Davy Klaassen and Kasper Dolberg among the scorers in a dominant away display. Fortuna's consolation from substitute Anthony Descotte was nothing more than a footnote.

AZ Alkmaar dominated possession and created chance after chance but could not hold on, as Willem II snatched a deserved point through Devin Haen's 81st-minute finish to end the hosts' perfect Eredivisie run.

NEC Nijmegen have not kept a single clean sheet in their last ten Eredivisie matches. Fortuna Sittard have scored in every one of theirs. Sunday evening at 19:00 has the makings of a proper contest.

Sparta Rotterdam host Willem II on Saturday evening with both sides desperately short of wins and, frankly, short of basic defensive standards. This one has goals written all over it, and not in a good way for either backline.

Utrecht and Willem II meet on Sunday with a combined record of zero wins across their last nine Eredivisie matches. Someone has to end their misery. The question is whether either side is capable of it.

Fortuna Sittard host Twente on Saturday evening with both sides in decent nick, but the numbers behind Sittard's defence tell a worrying story. Twente arrive knowing exactly where to hurt them.
