Keita's Late Equaliser Denies Union Saint-Gilloise Victory Against Real Sociedad in Europa League Thriller
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Union Saint-Gilloise 1-1 Real Sociedad. That scoreline flatters nobody and satisfies nobody. Saint-Gilloise bossed this match from start to finish in terms of basics. They competed harder, they pressed harder, they created more. And they still could not win it.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Listen, I trust my eyes. But when the numbers back up what the eyes are seeing, you cannot argue. Union Saint-Gilloise had 16 shots to Real Sociedad's five. They had five shots on target to Sociedad's one. They won 65 duels to Sociedad's 46. They made 28 tackles to Sociedad's 14. This was not a close match in terms of effort and desire. One team wanted it more.
The thing is, Real Sociedad had 56 per cent of the ball and still managed just four goal attempts. When you have possession like that, you have to be more of a threat. You have to do something with it. Sociedad did not. Their goalkeeper made four saves. He was their best player. That tells you everything.
A Dismal First Half from Both Sides
Neither side found the net before the break. That is where accountability has to kick in. Union were the aggressor. They were generating attacks, winning the physical battles, and causing Sociedad problems in behind. But they could not finish the job.
David Hubert picked up a yellow card for an argument in the 39th minute. That is unacceptable. You are already on top in this match. You do not need that. You do not need to hand the opposition a free kick and disrupt your own momentum with 50 minutes still to play. Get on with it. Keep your head.
Sociedad Strike First With the First Chance of Real Note
Real Sociedad came out for the second half and went straight down the other end. Beñat Turrientes, on as a substitute for Yangel Herrera at half-time, scored with a right foot shot in the 46th minute. One shot on target. One goal. That is the brutal side of this game.
The thing is, Turrientes was barely on the pitch. Herrera went off, Turrientes came on, and within a minute he had put Sociedad ahead. That is the kind of moment that should wake a team up. Union had been the better side and had nothing to show for it. Sociedad had done almost nothing and were winning. Standards have to be met in those moments.
Union's Attitude Was Not the Problem
To their credit, Union did not fold. That is what I want to see. When a team goes behind despite dominating, the easy thing is to drop the heads. Union did not. They kept competing. Nohim Chibani was booked for a foul in the 58th minute and was replaced by Denzel De Roeve in the 64th minute. Darius Olaru came off for Dylan Aquino in the 71st minute. Union's manager kept searching for the answer.
Guilherme Smith was booked for a foul in the 73rd minute. Again, unnecessary. You are chasing the game and you are giving away free kicks. That is poor game management. You cannot be handing Sociedad chances to run down the clock with cheap fouls. End of.
Kubo Could Not Unlock the Door
Real Sociedad brought on Takefusa Kubo for Luka Sucic in the 68th minute. Kubo is a player who can change a game. He did not. Sociedad's attacking output remained low. Four goal attempts in 90 minutes from a side with over half the ball is not good enough. The desire to protect the lead seemed to take over from any desire to make the game safe by scoring a second. That is a mentality question. You sit back, you invite pressure, and eventually it comes back to bite you.
Keita off the Bench to Break Sociedad Hearts
Sekou Abrahame Keita came on for Mateo Biondic in the 84th minute. Four minutes later, Union Saint-Gilloise were level. Keita scored with a right foot shot in the 88th minute. That is what a substitute is for. That is desire and accountability in one moment. You come on late in a match your side are losing, and you deliver. Simple as that.
Real Sociedad had made five substitutions trying to see the game out. Ander Barrenetxea and Pablo Marín came on in the 79th minute. Orri Óskarsson replaced Mikel Oyarzabal deep into added time. None of it helped them hold the lead they should never have been content to protect so passively.
Where Does This Leave Both Sides?
In their one completed Europa League match before tonight, Union Saint-Gilloise beat Viktoria Plzeň 3-0. A clean sheet, three goals, full control. So they know what a proper performance looks like. Tonight they competed at that level for large parts, but were let down by their inability to convert their dominance into goals before Keita finally saved them.
Real Sociedad came into this having lost to Bournemouth 1-2 in their one completed Europa League match prior to tonight. They arrive in Europe carrying injuries. One player is out until the end of November. Another was suspended before this game. Those are complications, but they are not excuses for a performance that offered almost nothing going forward.
The Bottom Line
Union Saint-Gilloise were the better team. They competed for 90 minutes. They hit the woodwork. They had 10 key passes to Sociedad's four. They won more headers, more tackles, more duels. In another game, they win this comfortably. The fact that they had to rely on an 88th-minute equaliser from a substitute to avoid defeat is the only real criticism you can level at them.
Real Sociedad took their one real chance and then sat back and hoped. That is not a formula for winning in Europe. It just is not. Attitude and standards have to be consistent for a full 90 minutes. Coasting at 1-0 with that level of attacking output is unacceptable at this level. Keita showed them exactly how much it cost them.
