The Basics Were Not Good Enough
Union Berlin lost 3-1 at home to Schalke 04 on Friday night. The scoreline tells you most of what you need to know. But I will tell you the rest.
The thing is, Union created chances. Thirteen goal attempts. Ten shots on target. Five big chances created. By any measure, they were in this game long enough to win it. They did not win it because they kept making the same mistakes, kept gifting Schalke the ball in dangerous areas, and had no accountability when it mattered. Desire without discipline is just noise. End of.
How the Goals Went In
Robin Gosens put Union ahead on 25 minutes with a left-foot shot. For a spell, they looked capable. Then it unravelled.
Adil Aouchiche equalised for Schalke right at the start of the second half, a right-foot shot on 46 minutes confirmed after a VAR check. That goal sucked the belief straight out of the stadium. Union had gone in at half-time with the lead. They came out and conceded inside a minute. That is not tactics. That is mentality.
Tim Skarke made it 2-1 to Schalke deep into stoppage time, finishing from the right foot in the 90th minute. And then, to rub it in further, Maximilian Wöber pulled one back for Union in the 90th plus 13, making the final score 3-1 to Schalke. A consolation. Nothing more.
Schalke Were Simply Hungrier
Look at the attacking numbers. Schalke registered 142 attacks to Union's 81. They produced 95 dangerous attacks compared to Union's 29. They completed 376 successful passes to Union's 154. Their dribble success rate was 56 per cent. Union's was 25 per cent.
Listen, I am not going to sit here and tell you Schalke were a great side on Friday night. They were not. But they competed. They showed desire. They ran channels, they caused problems all evening, and when the moment came in the closing stages, they took it. That is what winning football looks like. It is not complicated.
Three yellow cards for Schalke tells you they were aggressive, too. Aljoscha Kemlein booked for a foul just before half-time. Marin Ljubicic carded for an argument on 74 minutes, then hauled off two minutes later. Felix Uduokhai booked for a foul on 78. Schalke were not pretty. They were effective. There is a difference.
Union's Defensive Record Is a Scandal
Across their last ten completed Bundesliga matches, Union Berlin have conceded 23 goals and kept just one clean sheet. One. In ten games. That is not a defensive unit. That is a revolving door with a badge on it.
Their last outing before this was a 0-4 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. Before that, a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. They have shipped goals for fun and the back line has offered nothing resembling a reliable defensive structure. Goalkeeper Loris Karius was booked for time-wasting in the 90th minute. He was wasting time while losing 2-1. The goalkeeper. Time-wasting. I will leave that one there.
The Substitution at 21 Minutes Should Worry Everyone
Dejan Ljubicic came off at the 21-minute mark, replaced by Junior Dina Ebimbe. That is barely past the opening quarter of the match. That is either injury or it is a manager making a panicked decision very early. Neither option is good. Union were already carrying multiple injury absentees coming into this fixture, including players on long-term absences since as far back as early 2026. The squad depth was always going to be tested. On Friday it was found badly wanting.
The stat That Kills Me
Union created five big chances. They missed three of them. Schalke created two big chances and missed one. That conversion gap is brutal and it is not random. Teams that do not take their chances against sides with the attacking threat Schalke showed on Friday get punished. They got punished.
You had 10 shots on target. You scored once. Your goalkeeper made seven saves and still ended up on the losing side. That is a team that cannot close games out, cannot hold a lead, and cannot defend when the pressure is on. Those are the basics. They were not done.
What Needs to Change
The thing is, Union are not without ability. The attacking output shows that. In five recent Bundesliga matches they scored twelve goals. That is not the problem. The problem is they let in ten in those same five games. They cannot keep being the most entertaining side to play against. Their own supporters deserve better than a team that scores and then invites the opposition to equalise.
Accountability has to start from the back. It has to start from the manager making clear that a 0-4 defeat last week and a 3-1 home defeat this week is unacceptable. Not disappointing. Not something to build from. Unacceptable. That word needs to be said clearly in the dressing room. Whether it is or not, I cannot tell you. What I can tell you is that right now nothing suggests the standards are where they need to be.
Schalke got what they came for. Three points, a clean three-goal winning margin, and a manager who clearly set his side up to press and attack with conviction. To be fair to Schalke, and I mean that without any sarcasm this time, they deserved it. Union gave it to them.
