Racing Santander vs Espanyol: Two Struggling Sides, Zero Room for Excuses
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Saturday 24 October 2026. El Sardinero. Fifteen fifteen kick-off. Two clubs with one win apiece across their last five La Liga matches. This should be a straightforward watch. It is anything but, and not in a good way.
Racing Santander: A Defence That Does Not Defend
The thing is, Racing's numbers tell you everything you need to know. Five matches. Eighteen goals conceded. Not one clean sheet. That is not a defensive crisis. That is a complete absence of defensive basics.
Racing lost to Celta Vigo conceding five, then shipped seven to Barcelona. The Barcelona result is understandable. Conceding five to Celta Vigo at home is unacceptable. End of. Their only win in this sample came against Deportivo Alaves, a 2-1 that barely qualifies as a performance and more as a relief.
Listen, a team that concedes eighteen in five has structural problems that one good week will not fix. Their backline is not competing. Somebody in that dressing room needs to stand up and demand better. From what I can see, nobody is doing it.
Espanyol: Compact but Toothless
Espanyol have their own problems. One win from five. Three goals scored across their last four matches before that win. They lost to Rayo Vallecano, they lost to Elche, and last time out they lost to Atletico Madrid, conceding one but creating almost nothing in reply.
The one moment of encouragement for Espanyol is that they kept a clean sheet in their win against Osasuna, a 2-0 result that showed they can organise defensively when the attitude is right. The problem is that result was followed by three defeats. Whatever they found that day, they lost it quickly.
They also come into this match carrying injury problems. The data sheet confirms two players out, one with a major injury not expected back until January 2026. That kind of absence matters. Depth gets tested. Standards drop when your squad gets stretched.
The Bet: Goals, and Plenty of Them
Listen, I do not need a laptop to read this game. Two teams low on confidence, both porous at the back, meeting at a ground where the crowd will turn on the home side the moment things go wrong. That is a recipe for an open, scrappy, mistake-filled match. Which means goals.
Verdict
Racing Santander need a result. Espanyol need a result. Neither looks capable of getting one cleanly. Expect both to score, expect mistakes, and expect at least one moment where you genuinely cannot believe what you are watching. Back both teams to score and move on. The thing is, at this level of form, goals are the only certainty. Everything else is noise.
