Liverpool 2-0 Brighton: Isak and an Own Goal Sink the Seagulls at Anfield

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

The Basics Won It

Listen, this was not a complicated football match. Liverpool scored twice in the first 21 minutes and Brighton never really looked like getting back into it. That is the story. Everything else is detail.

The thing is, Brighton came into this one in serious form. Four wins from five in the Premier League, 16 goals scored, only one conceded. That is a run that demands respect. And yet they were two down before the half-hour mark. Standards on the day. That is what it comes down to.

How the Goals Happened

The opener was a gift. Pascal Groß turned the ball into his own net on 17 minutes. Unacceptable at any level. You cannot give a side like Liverpool a foothold at Anfield for free. That is basic defensive accountability and Brighton failed it inside the first quarter of the match.

It got worse four minutes later. Alexander Isak finished from a Bradley Barcola assist in the 21st minute. A left-foot shot, composed, exactly what you expect from a forward of his quality. 2-0. Match over as a contest. Brighton had handed Liverpool the keys and walked away.

To Brighton's credit, they did not fold completely. They competed. But competing after you have already dug yourself a two-goal hole is a very different thing from competing when the match is level. The desire was there late on. The attitude at the start was not good enough. End of.

Costinha's Night to Forget

Brighton's evening was complicated further by Costinha. He came off injured in the sixth minute and was replaced by Ferdi Kadıoğlu. That is a disruption no side wants that early. Then Costinha picked up a yellow card on 73 minutes, which given he had already been substituted off tells you everything about the chaos Brighton were dealing with.

Olivier Boscagli was booked for a foul right on the stroke of half-time, in the 45th minute. He was replaced by Jack Hinshelwood at the break. Two yellows before the second half even got going. That is poor game management from individuals who should know better.

What the Numbers Tell You

Liverpool had 64 per cent of the ball and completed 486 passes at 84 per cent accuracy. Brighton managed 324 passes at 69 per cent. That tells you the story of the game in one paragraph.

The thing is, Liverpool had 17 shots to Brighton's 13. But here is where it gets interesting. Liverpool had only one shot on target. One. Brighton had four. Liverpool won the match 2-0. How? Because Brighton gave them two goals before Liverpool even needed to find their shooting boots. That own goal changes everything about how you read those numbers.

Brighton actually won more duels, 51 to Liverpool's 39. They made 18 tackles to Liverpool's 11. They won nine tackles to Liverpool's six. So they competed physically. They just could not compete where it matters most, which is keeping a clean sheet and taking your chances at the other end.

Liverpool's goalkeeper made three saves. Brighton's keeper made one. That is not a match where either side was exactly clinical in front of goal. Liverpool just needed less of it because two goals had already arrived without them having to work for them in any conventional sense.

Brighton's Defending Was the Story

I do not need to overcomplicate this. Brighton had kept clean sheets in four of their previous five Premier League matches. Their defence had been outstanding. Here, it collapsed inside 21 minutes through a combination of an own goal and a straightforward concession from open play.

Liverpool had 16 interceptions in this match. Brighton had five. That is the picture of a team that was disorganised going forward and got punished for it. Brighton won 21 successful headers to Liverpool's nine, which shows they were trying to defend their box. But by then the damage was done.

Brighton attempted 24 total crosses but only six were accurate. Liverpool attempted 24 crosses and landed six accurately too. Neither side was clinical from wide areas. The difference was what happened in the first 21 minutes, and that was entirely Brighton's doing.

Liverpool Managed It Well

Once Liverpool were two up, they were professional. Florian Wirtz was taken off in the 65th minute and replaced by Trey Nyoni. Isak came off on 77 minutes for Lewis Koumas. Barcola was replaced by Rio Ngumoha at the same time. Liverpool managed the game out without drama.

The thing is, Liverpool had their own injury concerns coming in and had looked inconsistent in recent weeks. They lost to Manchester City 3-0 not long ago. But at home, against a side that handed them two goals before the half-hour, they did what they needed to do. Clean sheet. Three points. Basics.

The Verdict

Liverpool win 2-0 and it was deserved on the day, though Brighton's defending made it considerably easier than it needed to be. Groß's own goal set the tone. Isak punished them again minutes later. After that, Liverpool had a simple afternoon.

Brighton will be furious. That form over their previous five matches suggested a side capable of going to Anfield and competing at the very least. They did compete, eventually. But you cannot give a top-side a 2-0 start and expect to recover. That is not attitude or desire. That is just the reality of the sport. Results business. End of.
