Leverkusen Dismantle Lech Poznań 4-0: Schick Leads Europa League Demolition Job

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Right. Let's not waste time dressing this up. Lech Poznań were taken apart. Bayer Leverkusen won 4-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening, and the scoreline was honest. There were no flukes. No moments of misfortune. Leverkusen were simply in a different class, and Lech could not compete. End of.

The First Half Did the Damage

Leverkusen had Lech beaten before the break. Martin Terrier came off injured at eighteen minutes and Patrik Schick came on. Within eleven minutes, Schick had converted a penalty to make it 1-0. Then, at minute thirty-two, Malik Tillman added a second with a right-foot shot. Schick converted a second penalty on forty-one minutes. Three goals before half-time. Lech did not create a single big chance across the entire ninety. Not one. Their goalkeeper made seven saves. That tells you everything about how the first half went and how the second half continued.

The thing is, when you look at Lech's defensive shape and their ability to handle pressure, the alarm bells were there. Lech had conceded four goals to Crystal Palace in the Europa League just weeks before this fixture. You do not fix that kind of defensive frailty overnight. And Leverkusen are not Crystal Palace. Leverkusen are a side with genuine quality, real desire to attack, and the technical standards to punish you every time you switch off. Lech switched off constantly.

The Numbers Are Unacceptable

Let me give you the basics. Leverkusen had 61 per cent of the ball. They attempted 22 shots to Lech's 10. They created 8 big chances. They missed 4 of those. Let that sink in. They missed four big chances and still won 4-0. Lech's goalkeeper kept the score remotely respectable.

Leverkusen completed 534 passes at a 91 per cent success rate. Lech managed 295 at 79 per cent. That is not a tight game that went the wrong way. That is a mismatch. Leverkusen had 13 interceptions to Lech's 3, won 9 tackles to Lech's 5, and completed 12 successful dribbles to Lech's 4. In every single category that matters, the away side dominated. The attitude and the desire to compete for the full ninety was entirely one-sided.

Listen, I do not need a spreadsheet to see that Lech were second to every ball. I watched a side that looked as though they had accepted defeat at half-time. Three goals down before the break, and then the manager makes five substitutions. That is capitulation management. You are not winning from there.

Lech's Night From the First Whistle

Lech had problems before a ball was even kicked. They came into this fixture carrying multiple injury absences, including two major injuries, one long-term injury not expected back until the end of December, and a player suspended. When you are short-handed at this level, the margins disappear. You need every fit player to be at maximum effort and maximum concentration. Lech did not get that.

The early substitution at minute fifteen, when Wojciech Mońka was replaced by Terry Yegbe, suggested Lech had issues from the very first whistle. You do not take a player off at fifteen minutes in a Europa League fixture unless something has gone seriously wrong. It disrupted whatever shape they were trying to hold, and Leverkusen were clinical enough to exploit it immediately.

Mateusz Skrzypczak picked up a yellow card for a foul on forty minutes. In a game already slipping away, that kind of indiscipline is the last thing you need. It tells you something about the frustration inside that Lech dressing room. When you cannot compete on the ball, players start resorting to fouls. Lech conceded 16 free kicks across the match. That is sloppy. That is a lack of accountability.

Leverkusen's Quality Was the Deciding Factor

Give credit where it is due. Leverkusen were excellent. Schick came off the bench and immediately changed the game. Two penalties, a constant threat. Tillman added his goal with composure. Ibrahim Maza rounded off the scoring in the eighty-eighth minute with a right-foot effort, assisted by substitute Afonso Moreira. That goal in the final minutes tells you about Leverkusen's standards. They do not stop. They do not take the foot off the pedal. They demand more of themselves even at 3-0. That is the mentality of a winning side.

They had one VAR check at twenty-five minutes involving Maza, and another at thirty-eight minutes involving Schick. Both situations were dealt with and Leverkusen stayed composed throughout. That composure, that refusal to let anything derail them, is what separates sides at this level.

Robert Andrich came on as a substitute at sixty-two minutes and picked up a yellow card for a foul at sixty-eight. Moussa Diaby, also introduced in the second half, followed him into the book at eighty minutes. Listen, even with the game won, there were yellow cards flying. Both sides finished the night with bookings. The difference is that Leverkusen's indiscipline came when the game was already dead. Lech's came when they needed to stay organised.

What Lech Must Address

Lech had won three of their previous five Europa League matches in this sample, including a 7-0 win over Thun. So they have shown they can put a performance together. The desire and the ability is there against the right opposition. But the gap between handling a side like Thun and handling Bayer Leverkusen is enormous. That 0-4 defeat to Crystal Palace and now this 0-4 defeat to Leverkusen show a clear pattern. Against quality opposition, Lech's defensive basics fall apart.

Three clean sheets in five Europa League matches looks reasonable on paper. But those clean sheets came against KÍ and Thun. The two times Lech faced genuine quality, they conceded eight goals combined without reply. That is the reality of where they are as a side. The basics are not good enough at this level. The standards are not good enough. And until there is genuine accountability within that squad for those performances, it will not change.

Leverkusen move on. Lech have serious questions to answer. The scoreline was fair, the performance was unacceptable, and no amount of excuses about injuries or rotation changes that fact.
