Lazio 3-1 Monza: Ten-Man Visitors Punished as Isaksen and Pinamonti Seal Comfortable Win

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Lazio won 3-1 against Monza on Sunday, and the result was as straightforward as the scoreline suggests. Four wins from their last five Serie A matches. Monza reduced to ten men before half-time. The game was done before the second half got going. Sometimes football is simple.

The First Half Told You Everything

Lazio were at it from the first whistle. Nuno Tavares opened the scoring in the third minute with a left-foot finish, assisted by Tijjani Noslin. Three minutes in and Monza were already chasing. That is not a position any away side wants to be in.

Gustav Isaksen doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, again with Noslin providing the assist. The thing is, Monza were already a disorganised mess before they went down to ten men. Two goals conceded in the first half-hour tells you everything about their defensive standards in this match.

Andrea Carboni picked up a booking in the 13th minute for a foul. Then Lorenzo Lucchesi made it catastrophically worse in the 35th minute. A professional foul as last man. Red card. Off he went. Monza were facing the final 55 minutes plus added time with ten men, two goals down, away from home. The game was over.

To their credit, Monza managed to pull one back almost immediately. Saba Goglichidze, who had come on as a substitute following Lucchesi's dismissal, headed in from a Dany Mota assist in the 46th minute. Monza scoring with their first meaningful contribution after the red card. Listen, that is the kind of goal that flatters a losing side and papers over the real story of the afternoon.

Lazio Were in Control Throughout

The statistics back up what the eye told you. Lazio had 66 per cent possession. They completed 516 passes from 596 attempts, an accuracy of 87 per cent. Monza completed 224 passes from 299. That is not a contest. That is one team playing football and another team trying to survive.

Lazio created three big chances. Monza created one. Lazio had 17 shots in total to Monza's 14, but the quality of Lazio's attempts was considerably better. Seven shots on target to Monza's six, but Lazio scored three of theirs. Monza scored one. That is the difference between a side with standards and a side without them.

Lazio hit the woodwork once as well, so the scoreline could easily have been more emphatic. Monza's goalkeeper made four saves. Had he not, this would have been a rout.

Monza Had No Accountability

Three losses in their last five Serie A matches before this game. Twelve goals conceded across those five matches. A clean sheet percentage of zero. These are not the numbers of a team that is competing. These are the numbers of a team with serious problems.

The red card was the moment that confirmed what was already obvious. Lucchesi's professional foul was reckless and unnecessary. Carboni had already been booked. Their manager Ivan Juric picked up a yellow card in the 79th minute for an argument on the touchline. The whole afternoon had the feel of a team that has lost its shape and its discipline. Unacceptable from start to finish.

Monza's shot volume of 14 looks acceptable on paper. The thing is, ten of those shots came from inside the box, yet they only scored once. That is not clinical finishing. That is a side that struggled to create genuine quality even when they had the ball in dangerous areas. Their dribble success rate was impressive at 83 per cent from 12 attempts, but it produced nothing. Pretty work that went nowhere.

Pinamonti Wraps It Up

Lazio managed the game intelligently in the second half. They made their substitutions, controlled the ball, and waited for the right moment. Andrea Pinamonti came off the bench in the 75th minute and wrapped up the three points in the 88th minute with a right-foot finish, assisted by Alfonso Pedraza. Job done.

Lazio's Danilho Doekhi had picked up a yellow card in added time at the end of the first half and was substituted off in the 53rd minute. Oliver Provstgaard also received a booking in the 55th minute and was replaced shortly after. Diogo Leite, who came on for Doekhi, then picked up a yellow himself in the 68th minute. Lazio carried some unnecessary disciplinary baggage through the second half. Three yellow cards for the home side is sloppy when you are that comfortable.

That is the one criticism you can level at Lazio today. When you are two goals up with the opposition down to ten men, you do not need to be collecting bookings. Stay disciplined. Keep your heads. The basics.

What This Result Means

Lazio go to four wins and one draw from their last five Serie A matches. Eight goals scored and only three conceded across that run. They have kept clean sheets in three of those five matches. This is a side with genuine quality and genuine desire right now. They are difficult to play against and they are clinical when the chance arrives.

Noslin was central to everything good about Lazio going forward, picking up two assists on the day. Tavares was a constant threat down the left. Isaksen took his goal well. And when Pinamonti came on late, he made his presence felt immediately. That is the attitude you need from a squad player. Come on, make a difference, end of.

Monza head back having conceded twelve goals in five matches before today and having added another one to that total here. They have attitude problems, discipline problems, and a defensive record that is an embarrassment. Something has to change for that club. Fast.

Lazio were better in every department that mattered. They competed harder, they executed the basics, and they punished a team that handed them every opportunity to do so. A comfortable afternoon at the Olimpico.
