Frosinone Stun Fiorentina 3-0: Raimondo Brace Exposes Viola's Alarming Defensive Failures

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Fiorentina 0-3 Frosinone. Write it down. Read it back. Let it sink in. Because what happened at the Artemio Franchi on Saturday evening was not a freak result. It was a public humiliation. And Fiorentina had no one to blame but themselves.

A Capitulation Built on Poor Basics

The thing is, Fiorentina had 60 per cent of the ball. They had 19 key passes to Frosinone's 12. They hit the woodwork twice. On every surface-level indicator, they were the better side. And they still got beaten 3-0. That tells you everything about standards, desire, and the ability to compete when it matters. Possession means nothing if you cannot defend.

Frosinone came to Florence with one completed Serie A match to their name, a 1-0 defeat to Juventus the week before. There was no mountain of evidence to suggest they could do this. And yet here we are. Antonio Raimondo scored twice. Gabriele Bracaglia added a header. And Fiorentina's goalkeeper had to make four saves to stop it being worse. That final scoreline could easily have been four or five.

Raimondo Was Simply Unplayable

Let's give credit where it is due. Antonio Raimondo was outstanding. He opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a left-foot finish, assisted by Giorgi Kvernadze. He then grabbed his second with another left-foot strike in the 68th minute, this time set up by Gabriele Bracaglia. Two goals, two assists across the partnership between Raimondo and Bracaglia. That is accountability in reverse. That is two players who turned up and did the basics right, repeatedly, against a home side who could not cope.

Bracaglia himself got on the scoresheet at the 38th minute with a header from a Giacomo Calò delivery. Three Frosinone players contributed directly to all three goals. Raimondo, Bracaglia, Kvernadze, Calò. These are not names that should be haunting a club of Fiorentina's standing. And yet.

Fiorentina's Defensive Attitude Is Unacceptable

Listen, I have seen Fiorentina's five most recent Serie A results and they read: loss, draw, win, draw, loss. Nine goals conceded in those five matches, three scored. That is a defensive record that should have the whole dressing room examining their attitude. The win against Juventus a few months back now looks like an anomaly. The 0-4 thrashing by AS Roma was repeated in feel if not in scoreline on Saturday.

Frosinone had 25 total shots. Twenty-five. Against a team playing at home with 60 per cent of the ball. Fiorentina managed 12. The visitors created four big chances. Fiorentina created four of their own and still came away with nothing. The conversion numbers tell a story of utter defensive incompetence from the home side, combined with sharp clinical finishing from the away end.

Fiorentina committed 14 fouls. They collected three yellow cards. Albert Gudmundsson went into the book for an argument in the second half before being substituted off at the 71st minute. Manager Fabio Grosso also picked up a yellow on the touchline in the 64th minute. When your manager is getting booked for arguing and your best forward is being hauled off in frustration, something has gone very wrong with the discipline and the attitude in that building.

Frosinone Won the Fight, Not Just the Match

Frosinone committed 21 fouls themselves and had three yellow cards of their own, with both Raimondo and Bracaglia booked before half time. Raimondo's yellow came in the eighth minute for a foul. Bracaglia went in the 24th. Gabriele Calvani was booked just before the break. These are players who were willing to compete. They fouled, they fought, and then they scored. That combination of desire and quality is what beats teams who drift through ninety minutes looking pretty with the ball.

The visiting side made five accurate crosses compared to Fiorentina's three, despite having less of the ball. They won 63 duels to Fiorentina's 65, almost matching a home side that should have dominated physically. Frosinone's 28 tackles against Fiorentina's 15 tells you who wanted it more. You do not need a laptop to see that. Frosinone were at it from first minute to last.

A Squad With Problems It Cannot Paper Over

There is a major injury in the Fiorentina camp, with one player ruled out until late October. That is a blow, but it is not an excuse for a 3-0 home defeat to a newly promoted side in the opening weeks of the campaign. The problems here go deeper than personnel. They are about standards and accountability.

Fiorentina made five substitutions, bringing on Nicolò Fagioli, Marco Brescianini, Rolando Mandragora, and others in an attempt to change the shape and stem the bleeding. None of it worked. By the time those changes came, the damage was done. Frosinone had banked three goals before the hour mark and simply managed the match from there with composure.

Fabio Grosso's side deserve enormous credit for that composure. Sitting in with a two-goal lead and seeing out a third is not easy away from home. They did it with discipline and organisation. Fiorentina had 13 shots off target. They hit the woodwork twice. And still they could not find the net. That is the story of a team that is not converting its moments, and is being punished the instant it switches off defensively.

The Verdict

Fiorentina need to look at their standards and ask some hard questions. The basics of defending, competing, and holding a clean sheet have gone missing. Nine goals conceded in five matches before this one, and now three more. That is twelve goals against in six Serie A matches. End of.
