Atalanta 4-4 Frosinone: Eight-Goal Madness at Gewiss as Frosinone Snatch Late Draw

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Four goals. Eight goals total. Two teams who could not keep a clean sheet between them if their lives depended on it. Atalanta versus Frosinone on Sunday 25 October ended 4-4, and I will say this plainly. That scoreline is not a spectacle. That scoreline is a failure of defensive basics from both sides. End of.

The Opening Chaos

Romano Schmid set the tone inside the first minute. A right-foot shot, a goal, and Frosinone were already behind. That is the kind of start that exposes a visiting team's shape immediately. The desire to hold a line, to compete from the whistle, was not there early enough from the away side.

Atalanta then had Gabriele Bracaglia cautioned for a foul in the seventh minute, which complicated Frosinone's structure further. You are a goal down, a man is booked, and the game is barely started. The thing is, that is when character shows. Frosinone showed some.

Nikola Krstovic pulled one back for Frosinone on 14 minutes, assisted by Charles De Ketelaere, and it was a tidy finish. Credit where it is due. But Schmid got his second on 17 minutes to restore Atalanta's lead. Two goals in under twenty minutes. Both defences asleep.

First Half Collapse

Frosinone were handed a penalty before the half hour, and Ederson stepped up to take it. He missed. That is a big moment. A miss from the spot when you are chasing a match tests the character of any side. To their credit, Frosinone did not fold.

A VAR check involving De Ketelaere caused a stoppage around the same time. Frosinone also lost Raoul Bellanova to a substitution in the 29th minute, which disrupted whatever rhythm they had built. Lorenzo Bernasconi came on in his place.

Krstovic scored again on 45 minutes, this time assisted by Davide Zappacosta, to level it at 2-2 going into half time. Frosinone had fought back. Whether that is credit to them or an indictment of Atalanta's inability to manage a lead is a conversation worth having. I know where I land on it.

Second Half Bedlam

The second half started exactly as the first had ended. Complete chaos.

Frosinone had Bracaglia replaced by Aleksa Terzic at the break, and Giacomo Calo put Frosinone ahead on 48 minutes, assisted by Fares Ghedjemis. A visiting side taking the lead in a Serie A away fixture is not nothing. But Atalanta responded two minutes later. Eljif Elmas scored on 50 minutes, assisted by Krstovic, to level it again at 3-3. Six goals in roughly 50 minutes of football. I have watched more organised pub matches.

The thing is, Atalanta had the resources to take control. They brought on Mario Pasalic and Nicola Zalewski on 62 minutes. They had the attacking quality. But accountability on the defensive side was nowhere to be seen. Atalanta won only 41 duels compared to Frosinone's 61. In a match this open, that tells you everything about who was competing harder for the basics.

Frosinone's Late Sucker Punch

Terzic, the substitute who came on at half time for Bracaglia, scored on 82 minutes to put Frosinone 4-3 up. A left-foot finish, again assisted by Ghedjemis. A substitute winning the match for a visiting side in the 82nd minute. Atalanta had four injuries going into this fixture, three of them moderate severity. That context matters for squad depth. It does not excuse what happened defensively.

Terzic then picked up a yellow card on 85 minutes for an argument. And in stoppage time, Antonio Raimondo was also booked for an argument. That is four yellow cards for Frosinone across the match, four players losing their heads. Not a side in complete control of themselves.

Atalanta equalised to make it 4-4, though the precise scorer is not confirmed in the available match data, and I will not guess. What I will say is that Atalanta needed a point, got a point, and should be deeply uncomfortable about how close they came to losing this at home.

What the Stats Tell You

Frosinone had 107 attacks to Atalanta's 64. Frosinone had 72 dangerous attacks to Atalanta's 40. Frosinone won 61 duels to Atalanta's 41. Listen, those are not the numbers of a team that simply got lucky. Frosinone competed. They ran harder. They wanted it more at key moments.

Atalanta had 54 per cent possession and more total shots, 24 to 22. Their goalkeeper made six saves. Frosinone's keeper made three. The crossing was wildly different. Frosinone landed 10 accurate crosses. Atalanta managed two from 21 attempts. That is not a tactical issue. That is basic execution. Unacceptable at this level.

Atalanta's form heading into this match read one win, four defeats from five Serie A fixtures. They had conceded 10 goals across that sample. A clean sheet percentage of zero. Not one clean sheet in five matches. You do not need anyone's laptop to tell you that defence is broken. You just have to look.

Frosinone's Character Cannot Be Ignored

Frosinone came into this with three wins from five Serie A fixtures. They had beaten Sassuolo 4-2 in their most recent outing. They had something about them coming in, and it showed. They took the lead in the second half. They scored four goals away from home. That takes desire.

The problem is they gave four back. A clean sheet percentage of 20 per cent in their five-match sample. They can score. They cannot keep the ball out. That is a pattern, and it will hurt them eventually.

The Bottom Line

Eight goals. Zero clean sheets. Four yellow cards for the visitors. A penalty missed. A substitute scoring a late goal only to not win the game. This match had absolutely everything except defending.

Atalanta are in trouble if they cannot sort their defensive standards. Four injuries in the squad, a home match at 14:00 on a Sunday, and they cannot hold a lead against Frosinone. That is not bad luck. That is a standards problem. Fix the basics or keep dropping points. It is a results business. End of.
