The Championship doing what it always does, throwing two clubs together who both desperately need points and producing exactly the kind of match that keeps you glued to your sofa long after you promised yourself an early night.

Look, I want to be fair to Stoke here. The data we have on them is... limited. Very limited. Their form records across all windows show just one match played, one win, no goals conceded. That is it. One game. Which tells us they started the season with a clean sheet victory, scored twice, and that is essentially all we have got to go on for this campaign.

In the league table, Stoke sit 18th after that one game played, with a loss recorded, one goal scored and two conceded. So the away record for Stoke this season is a loss. One game, one defeat on the road. That is their Championship away form coming into Tuesday.

Now before Stoke fans start properly fuming at me, I know one game is basically nothing. But it is what we have. And what it tells us is that Stoke have not yet found a way to win away from home in this division this season. Cardiff, meanwhile, are purring at home. That context matters.

The Vibe Check: Cardiff Should Fancy This

Cardiff sit 14th in the Championship table after one game played, with a point from a draw. Stoke are 18th with no points. Early days, obviously, both teams have barely kicked a ball in the new season. But Cardiff's underlying form across the last ten games overall is genuinely impressive. Five wins in ten, 21 goals scored. There is real momentum there even if the very recent overall form slope has dipped slightly to minus 0.2.

The home context though. That 0.8 momentum slope at home. Cardiff on their own patch are pointing upwards and doing it sharply.

There is also the question of goals. Cardiff's away BTTS rate is 80 per cent, which suggests when they travel they get into open, scrappy games. What to Actually Expect

Here is my read on it. Cardiff come into this one knowing their home ground is a strength. They have won three of their last five there. Stoke are coming to Wales with a loss already on their away record this season and very little data suggesting they are going to rip open a Cardiff defence that has kept clean sheets in 60 per cent of recent home games.

The scenes I am expecting are not necessarily end-to-end madness. This feels more like a Cardiff-controlled home performance, a side that is tight at the back and clinical enough up top to nick it. Stoke will not come to roll over, they never do, but the numbers are not exactly screaming away-day adventure for them right now.

I'm going big on this: Cardiff to win and under 2.5 goals. The Bluebirds have turned Cardiff City Stadium into something resembling a proper home fortress over these last five games and I do not see Stoke being the side to break that down on a Tuesday night in September.
