Sheffield Wednesday 7-2 Bromley: Wednesday Run Riot in League One Demolition

Seven goals. Against a Bromley side that came into this match unbeaten in their two previous League One outings. Let that sit for a second.

Sheffield Wednesday were exceptional on Saturday afternoon. Not just good. Exceptional. They dominated from the first whistle and by the time the final whistle went, this was not a scoreline that flattered them. If anything, it was fair. Wednesday were that good and Bromley were that bad.

Fifteen shots on target compared to Bromley's two. Twenty-three key passes to Bromley's two. You do not need any fancy tools to read those numbers. That is one team competing and one team not competing. End of.

Callum Slattery set the tone immediately. His right-foot finish in the seventh minute, assisted by Louie Barry, was a statement. Wednesday were not here to feel their way into the game. They were here to impose themselves and they did exactly that.

First Half Destruction

Mason Burstow doubled the lead on 31 minutes, finishing from a Jamal Lowe assist. Lowe then got on the scoresheet himself right on the stroke of half-time, making it three before the break. That goal, assisted by Slattery, was the kind of combination play that comes from a team with genuine desire and movement off the ball.

Bromley went into the break three goals down and you could argue they were fortunate it was not more. Their goalkeeper made eight saves in total across the ninety minutes. Eight saves against seven goals conceded tells you everything about the scale of the attacking threat Wednesday created.

Listen, you can point to Bromley's discipline issues and they did not help themselves. Mitch Pinnock was booked for a foul on 34 minutes. Omar Sowunmi followed him into the book on 56 minutes. Two yellow cards, constant pressure, and a team being pulled apart. That is a mentality problem as much as a tactical one.

Louie Barry Takes Centre Stage

If there was one player who embodied Wednesday's standards on the day, it was Louie Barry. He assisted the opener for Slattery, then scored twice himself either side of half-time. His first came at the 46-minute mark from a Barry Bannan assist. His second arrived just three minutes into the second half, assisted by Mason Burstow. Two goals, one assist. That is an afternoon's work you cannot argue with.

Barry was eventually withdrawn on 79 minutes, replaced by Ali Al-Hamadi. By that point his job was done and then some. The crowd got a player who wanted the ball, who competed for every inch, and who finished with the kind of composure that separates those who talk about desire from those who show it.

The Second Half Formality

Bromley made three changes at the break. Victor Adeboyejo and Tobias Brenan came on, as did Ethon Archer who replaced the booked Pinnock. The changes did not alter the game in any meaningful way. Wednesday had 69 percent of the ball and were not going to give it back.

Jamal Lowe added his second of the afternoon on 73 minutes with a left-foot finish to make it six. Gabriel Otegbayo then headed home from a Kieran Morrison assist on 81 minutes to complete Wednesday's remarkable tally of seven.

Bromley did get two consolations. Victor Adeboyejo converted a penalty on 85 minutes. Then, two minutes later, Otegbayo was unfortunate enough to turn the ball into his own net following Bromley's efforts to make the scoreline slightly more presentable. It barely registered. Wednesday had already won this match several goals ago.

Callum Slattery received a yellow card in added time for a foul. Largely irrelevant given the context. The game was long over.

What This Tells Us

Sheffield Wednesday came into this match with just two completed League One results to point to. A win over Leyton Orient, beating them 2-1 on 15 August, and then a 0-1 home defeat to Bradford City five days later. The Bradford result raised questions about accountability and standards. Against Bromley, those questions were answered emphatically.

The thing is, 556 passes completed at 85 percent accuracy is not accidental. That is a team that has worked on its basics. That is a team that understands how to maintain the ball and hurt teams when they press. Wednesday created nine big chances and missed five of them. They still scored seven. That is the kind of performance that should make League One opponents very uncomfortable indeed.

Bromley arrived here with decent recent form, having beaten Barnsley 1-0 on 15 August and drawing 1-1 with Cambridge United a week later. They were not a nothing side coming in. Wednesday treated them like one. That speaks to the level Wednesday are capable of when the attitude and standards are right.
