Raphinha Delivers When It Matters

Listen, I will give Sevilla credit where it is due. Youssouf Fofana put them ahead with a header in the 19th minute and for a brief spell they looked like they might make a proper game of it. They had 21 tackles to Barcelona's 15. They made five saves to Barcelona's two. Their goalkeeper was busy and he was not terrible. Sevilla did not lie down.

But the basics told a brutal story. Barcelona had 69 per cent of the ball. They created six big chances to Sevilla's one. They had 24 shots to Sevilla's seven. They hit the woodwork twice and still missed four big chances. That is how dominant they were. Sevilla were defending for their lives from the first whistle to the last and they could not sustain it.

The thing is, you can compete hard in a game and still lose badly if the team on the other side is streets ahead of you in quality. That is what happened here. Sevilla's attitude was not the problem. Their standards were simply not at the level Barcelona demanded.

The Stats Do Not Lie

Barcelona completed 581 passes at a 90 per cent accuracy rate. Sevilla managed 278 passes at 73 per cent. That is not a midfield battle. That is a mismatch. When one team has the ball that often and moves it that accurately, the other side spends the whole match running after shadows. Sevilla's legs were gone by the time the third goal went in.

Their clean sheet percentage in the five La Liga matches before this one sat at 40 per cent. They had won three of those five, with results including a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruña and a 1-0 win over Valencia just days before this game. They came in with momentum. Barcelona simply had more.

Barcelona had won all five of their La Liga matches heading into this fixture. Five wins. Twenty-three goals scored. Six conceded. Including a 7-2 win over Racing Santander and a 5-0 demolition of Valencia. That is not a team in a purple patch. That is a team in serious form with a serious desire to keep winning.

Going back ten matches, Barcelona had eight wins and two losses. Their away record was immaculate. They came to the Sánchez-Pizjuán knowing exactly what they were capable of and they delivered it. There was no panic after Fofana's header. They equalised within three minutes and never looked back.

The Substitutions Changed Nothing

Sevilla made five changes from the bench trying to change the pattern of the game. Chidera Ejuke came on at 59 minutes. José Ángel Carmona and Isaac Romero followed at 68. None of it altered the outcome because by then, Barcelona had already put the game to bed. Raphinha's third goal came at 69 minutes, a minute after those changes. The game was over before the tactical adjustments could mean anything.

Barcelona took Raphinha off at 77 minutes after his hat-trick. That is accountability in the other direction. Your job is done. Come off. Make way. Karim Adeyemi came on and the result never wavered.

The Verdict

Barcelona were the better team by some distance. Raphinha was exceptional. Three goals, two assists for Lamine Yamal in those final two strikes, and a performance that showed complete commitment to the basics of finishing, movement, and competing in every moment.

Sevilla gave what they had. It was not enough. When you allow a side with that level of quality 69 per cent of the ball and six big chances, you are going to lose. You might lose by more than two goals if their finishing is sharper. The one consolation for Sevilla is that their goalkeeper kept it respectable.
