Sampdoria 2-1 Catanzaro: Insigne and Begic Deliver as Samp End Losing Run

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Sampdoria 2-1 Catanzaro. Write it down. Because after four straight losses and nine goals conceded in five matches, Sampdoria needed that. Badly.

The Basics First

Catanzaro came into this with 58 per cent of the ball and 458 passes. They moved it well. They looked the more composed side on paper. And they still lost. The thing is, football is not played on paper. Sampdoria had 17 shots to Catanzaro's ten. They had 13 shots inside the box to Catanzaro's seven. They had six shots on target to Catanzaro's one. That is execution. That is desire to get in the right areas and pull the trigger. Catanzaro had the ball and did very little with it that mattered.

First Half: An Own Goal and a Red Card

This match had chaos written all over it from the off. Both sides had players booked for arguing at the 17-minute mark. Liam Henderson picked up a card for Sampdoria, and Pietro Iemmello did likewise for Catanzaro. You want to compete. You do not want to lose your head. Those are two different things. Know the difference.

Stefan Gartenmann then fouled his way to a yellow card at 38 minutes, and minutes later he gave Sampdoria the lead in the worst way imaginable. In the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Gartenmann put the ball into his own net. An own goal to go with a yellow card. That is a first half to forget if you are a Catanzaro man.

Sampdoria went into the break 1-0 up. Given their form coming in, a win was not guaranteed. But the lead was deserved based on the chances they were creating.

Second Half: Insigne Puts It to Bed, Then Begic Seals It

The second half opened with a VAR review involving Lorenzo Insigne at the 53-minute mark. Whatever the check was, it did not lead to a goal being disallowed. Because two minutes later, Insigne put Sampdoria 2-0 up. A right-foot shot, assisted by Tobias Lauritsen. That is a player doing his job. Simple. Clinical. The kind of goal a side needs when they are low on confidence.

Listen, Sampdoria had four big chances created in this match. They missed two of them. But two goals from six shots on target against a keeper who made four saves tells you they made their moments count when it mattered. Catanzaro had two big chances created and missed two of them. That is the difference in a match like this.

Catanzaro pulled one back somewhere in the second half to make it 2-1 and set up a nervous finish. The home side were not helped by the red card shown to Kevin Mbabu in the 90th minute. He came on as a substitute at 79 minutes and was off again before full time for a foul. That is unacceptable. You are brought on to see the game out. You do your job. You do not give the opposition a lifeline and leave your teammates exposed.

Credit where it is due. Tjas Begic, another substitute, scored at 85 minutes to make it 2-1. He came on at 70 minutes and scored within 15 minutes. That is accountability from a sub. That is what impact off the bench looks like. Not red cards. Goals.

The Numbers Behind the Win

Catanzaro won 51 duels to Sampdoria's 40. They had more successful dribbles. They had more possession, more passes, more corners. They also had one shot on target. One. With ten attempts. That tells you everything about their attitude in the final third. You can move the ball around all afternoon. At some point you have to compete in the box.

Sampdoria committed 17 fouls to Catanzaro's nine. They were scrappy. They were physical. They picked up three yellow cards and a red. But they also had 69 dangerous attacks to Catanzaro's 50. They worked harder in the areas that produce goals. The thing is, for a side that had conceded nine times in their previous five matches, a win with that kind of attacking output is a sign of something. Not a revolution. But a sign.

The Signal Bets: A Word on What Happened

The Under 2.5 at 51 per cent confidence was marginal at best. Three goals ended that one. The BTTS No made sense given Sampdoria had kept zero clean sheets in their previous five Serie B matches and Catanzaro's own goal came before the away side could even respond. In the end both teams scored and that was that. The Catanzaro win at 29 per cent confidence was always a long shot. It lost because Catanzaro could not do anything meaningful with the ball they had.

I back unders and clean sheets for a reason. Matches like this remind you why marginal edges are not enough. You need conviction. A 51 per cent confidence on an under is not conviction. End of.

What This Means for Sampdoria

Sampdoria came into this having won zero of their previous five Serie B matches. Four losses. One draw against Cesena. They had conceded nine goals in that spell. The standards at this club are not where they need to be. One win does not change that. But this win, against a side that controlled the ball and still lost, shows there is something to work with if the attitude is right.

The desire was there. The dangerous attacks were there. The shots were there. Insigne delivered. Begic delivered off the bench. The defence held firm enough after the own goal did the early work. That is the basics done right.

Keep it simple. Compete. Win your moments. Do that consistently and Sampdoria might start moving in the right direction. They are not there yet. But this was a start.
