Sønderjyske 4-2 Randers: Home Side End Miserable Run With Emphatic Win

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

It has been a wretched run for Sønderjyske Fodbold. Four defeats in their last five Danish Superliga matches before this one. Fifteen goals conceded in that same sample. A clean sheet percentage of zero. This was a side that looked broken. And then they went and put four past Randers FC without breaking sweat in the second half. Football. You never learn it.

The Basics Done Right

The thing is, Sønderjyske did not do anything complicated here. They competed. They ran. They executed the basics when it mattered. Randers came into this match with 61 per cent possession and 131 attacks over the course of the afternoon. They dominated the ball. They created. And they still lost 4-2. Possession without end product is just keep-ball. It counts for nothing.

Sønderjyske sat at 39 per cent possession and still scored four times. They had seven shots on target to Randers' six. They won 40 duels to Randers' 54. On almost every territorial measure, Randers looked the better side. But Sønderjyske were clinical where it counted, and Randers were not. End of.

First Half: Sønderjyske Strike Twice Despite Pressure

The opening period set the tone. Anders Hoeg was booked for a foul in the 15th minute, which told you early on that Sønderjyske were going to make life difficult for themselves. But the home side responded with the first goal of the match. Osaze De Rosario found the net from a right foot shot in the 25th minute, with Dalton Wilkins picking up the assist. A clean, well-worked move.

Randers hit back almost immediately. Elies Mahmoud levelled for the visitors in the 36th minute with a left foot shot, assisted by Sabil Hansen. Credit where it is due. Randers showed desire there. They did not sit back and accept being behind. They came and got their goal.

But Sønderjyske were not done. In first half stoppage time, Brynjar Ingi Bjarnason headed home from an Alexander Munksgaard delivery to make it 2-1 going into the break. That header mattered enormously. It was the kind of goal that breaks the opposition. You give everything to draw level and then concede right on the whistle. That is a body blow. Randers also lost Dalton Wilkins to a second yellow card in first half stoppage time. He had already picked up a booking earlier in the half for a foul. Two yellows before the break. Unacceptable. You cannot leave your team with ten men at half-time and expect to come back.

Wait. The data shows Wilkins was booked at 45+2 minutes, and Anders Hoeg was booked at 15 minutes. Both cards went to Sønderjyske players, not Randers. So Sønderjyske were down to ten men going into the second half. That makes what followed even more remarkable.

Second Half: Ten Men Sønderjyske Pull Clear

Sønderjyske came out in the second half and immediately killed the tie. Mohamed Cherif Haidara scored in the 49th minute with a left foot shot, assisted by Sefer Emini, who had himself come on as a substitute in the 39th minute. That is a player coming off the bench and immediately influencing the game. That is accountability. That is understanding your role.

Randers threw bodies forward and used their substitutions in the 56th minute, bringing on Mohamed Sankoh and Axel Henriksson. Sankoh made an immediate impact, scoring in the 66th minute to make it 3-2. Credit to him. He came on and did exactly what was asked of him. At that point you would have thought Randers might push on and find an equaliser.

They did not. Sønderjyske, with ten men and already in front, found a fourth goal through Ismaïl Seydi in the 78th minute, again assisted by Osaze De Rosario. That was the match done. Seydi was substituted off in the 82nd minute alongside De Rosario, with Matthew Hoppe and Anders Bergholt coming on to see out the game. Sønderjyske had done enough. More than enough.

Discipline: A Problem That Nearly Killed the Result

Let me be direct about this. Sønderjyske collected three yellow cards on the day. Anders Hoeg in the 15th minute, Dalton Wilkins in first half stoppage time for his second booking, and Sefer Emini in the 85th minute. Fifteen fouls committed across the match by Sønderjyske. You cannot keep giving away that many free kicks and expect to dominate games. Today they got away with it because their finishing was sharp and Randers were poor in front of goal. Next week they might not be so fortunate.

The attitude and desire were there. The standards in terms of discipline were not. That needs addressing. Standards apply to every part of the game, not just the attacking ones.

Randers: Plenty of Ball, No Reward

Listen, Randers had 14 shots in this match to Sønderjyske's 10. They had six shots on target. They had 131 attacks. They had six accurate crosses. And they scored twice. That is not good enough. When you dominate possession the way Randers did and you lose 4-2, you have to look at the basics of converting what you create. Mohamed Sankoh aside, the attacking output from Randers was not matched by the quality of their finishing.

Randers came into this match having beaten Brøndby IF 3-0 in their previous Superliga match and beaten AGF 2-1 before that. Two wins on the spin. There was genuine momentum there. That has now been stopped in its tracks by a Sønderjyske side that most had written off. That is the game. You do not get to decide when you are allowed to relax.

Verdict

Sønderjyske Fodbold were desperate for this win and they earned it. Four goals, three points, and a performance that showed desire when they needed it most. The discipline issues remain a concern and they cannot keep conceding at the rate they were before this match. But today they competed. Today they were clinical. Today they got the result. In a results business, that is what matters.
