If Wilson's goal was the knife going in, Fábio Carvalho's goal in first-half stoppage time was the twist. Right-foot shot, again assisted by Dango Ouattara. But by that point, two substitutions had already been made by Reading at the 63-minute mark, with Jacob Brown and Paddy Lane coming on. The changes did not change the match. Reading had neither the quality nor the momentum to seriously threaten an equaliser. Brentford managed the game out without any real alarm.
Brentford's Control Was Suffocating
Brentford made their own changes at half-time, bringing Yegor Yarmolyuk on for Mamadou Sangaré. They made further changes in the 61st and 77th minutes, cycling through Jannik Schuster, Jaidon Anthony, Aaron Hickey, and Igor Thiago. The fact that they could ring those changes, manage the game down, and still never look like conceding a second tells you about the standards this Brentford side carries.
Dango Ouattara was eventually withdrawn at 77 minutes after creating both goals. He had done his work. Brentford's manager knew when to preserve him. That is good management. That is knowing your squad and trusting the basics.
Their only recent Carabao Cup result coming into this match was a 6-1 win over Birmingham. That is the standard Brentford had set. They did not hit those heights tonight but they did not need to. They were professional. They competed at the level required and no more.
Reading Had the Cup Form. Brentford Had the Quality.
Reading came into this match with a decent record in the Carabao Cup over their last three completed matches, winning two and drawing one, scoring 6 goals in the process. Their wins over Stevenage, a 3-0, and Portsmouth, a 2-1, showed they could perform in this competition. The draw against Bromley was a blip but the overall picture was reasonable.
The thing is, Stevenage and Bromley are not Brentford. Portsmouth are not Brentford. When the level rises, so must your standards, your attitude, and your execution. Reading found that out the hard way at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Tuesday night.
This was not a catastrophic performance by Reading. They had 17 shots. Their goalkeeper made 7 saves and kept them in it. But you cannot give up 2 goals in the first half, one of them inside three minutes, and expect to advance against a Premier League side. The basics were not there when they mattered most.

Brentford deserved this. Wilson scored early, Carvalho finished the half off, and Brentford controlled the game with a level of composure and quality that Reading simply could not match. O'Connor's header was the one moment of genuine quality from the home side. It came too late and meant too little.
Brentford progress. Reading go home. The scoreline was correct. The result was correct. Accountability starts with the basics and Reading did not deliver them when it counted.
