Pau 1-1 Sochaux result, stats and report

Friday night football in Ligue 2. Pau at home. Sochaux coming in with something to prove. The result was a 1-1 draw, and on the face of it that looks reasonable. It was not reasonable. Sochaux should have won this match. Pau survived on their goalkeeper's back and on sheer stubbornness. Those are not criticisms. That is just what happened.

Sochaux Were the Better Side. By Some Distance.

The thing is, the numbers do not lie and they do not need dressing up. Sochaux had 15 shots to Pau's eight. Eight shots on target to Pau's two. Twenty-seven dangerous attacks to seventeen. Nine key passes to five. Twelve tackles to three. Sochaux competed harder, created more, and pressed with more intent from the first whistle. They deserved three points and they did not get them. That is football. It is also unacceptable if you are their manager and you do not address the finishing.

Lorenzo Rajot put Sochaux in front on 29 minutes with a left-foot finish. That was the goal the match deserved at that point. Sochaux had been the sharper side, they had forced Pau backwards, and Rajot punished them. Good goal. Clean execution. That is what forwards are supposed to do.

The Card Situation Changed Everything

Pau's evening got complicated early. Samy Baghdadi picked up a yellow card on 20 minutes for a foul. Fine. Those things happen. Then the Pau manager Vincent Hognon collected a yellow of his own at the 30-minute mark for an argument on the touchline. That tells you the mood inside the stadium. It was heated. Then Saad Agouzoul added another yellow for Pau at 34 minutes, also for a foul. Three cards before half-time. That is a disciplinary disaster and it pointed to a team that was rattled and struggling to cope with what Sochaux were doing to them.

By the end of the match Pau had received a red card. One red card. Three yellow cards. Sochaux picked up none. That is the difference in composure and attitude between the two sides on the night. Listen, if you are giving away that many cards in the first half you are not in control of yourself or the game. End of.

Pau's Goalkeeper Kept Them In It

Pau made seven saves. Sochaux made two. That one stat tells you everything about where the pressure was going. Pau's goalkeeper worked all night. Sochaux had eight shots on target and only scored once. One. The finishing was poor and that is why Sochaux are going home with one point instead of three. You create that volume of chances and you have to put the game to bed. They did not.

Sochaux also had five corners to Pau's one and seven accurate crosses to Pau's three. They were dominant in the wide areas, they were winning the physical battles, 36 duels won to Pau's 23, and they still could not find a second goal. That has to be addressed. Desire to score is one thing. Execution of the basics in the final third is another. Sochaux had the desire. The execution let them down.

Pau's Equaliser and the Substitutions

Pau managed to find an equaliser and finish the match level at 1-1. They made four substitutions during the game. Benjamin Gomel came on for Landry Nomel at 56 minutes. Bendjaloud Youssouf replaced the booked Samy Baghdadi at the same time, which was sensible management given the disciplinary situation. Dylan Tavares came on for Dalangunypole Gomis at 65 minutes. Sochaux, for their part, made zero substitutions. None. They kept the same eleven on the pitch for the entire match. Whether that is confidence in the starting group or a lack of options, I cannot say. What I can say is that with a lead to protect and the game still very much alive, it is a bold call.

Pau's Recent Form Makes This Draw Feel Bigger Than It Is

Pau came into this match having won one, drawn one, and lost three of their previous five Ligue 2 outings. They conceded nine goals in those five matches and kept just one clean sheet. The thing is, a team leaking goals at that rate and losing that regularly does not suddenly become a solid outfit overnight. They were hanging on here and they knew it. The Pau goalkeeper making seven saves confirms that.

Over their last ten Ligue 2 matches the picture is worse. Three wins, one draw, and six defeats, with 22 goals conceded. That is a defence with serious problems. They will take the point, of course they will, and good luck to them. But nobody at Pau should be satisfied with where things stand based on that record.

Sochaux's Composure Is Admirable. The Finishing Is Not.

Sochaux had won one, drawn three, and lost one in their previous five Ligue 2 matches coming in. They had kept clean sheets in three of those five games. They are a team that is hard to beat. They compete. They defend their shape. Those are real qualities and I have no issue saying so.

But you cannot go away from a game where you generated that level of threat and only score once. Sochaux had one big chance created and missed one big chance. Pau also created one big chance and missed one. On balance of play those numbers do not reflect reality. Sochaux were clearly the more threatening side all night. When you have that control of a match, when your goalkeeper barely has to work, when you win the duels and the tackle count and every pressing statistic, and you still only draw, that is a failure of execution. Standards have to be higher than that in front of goal. End of.

The Verdict

Sochaux were better. Pau were disciplined into submission at times and rescued by their goalkeeper at others. One point each. Pau will not complain. Sochaux should be furious with themselves. The basics of finishing were not good enough and in a division where results are tight, that will cost you when it matters most.
