Thierno Barry Sinks Newcastle as Everton Hold On for 1-0 Win at St. James' Park

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Newcastle United 0-1 Everton. Write it down. Then explain it. Because if you watched that match and still think Newcastle deserved anything from it, I cannot help you.

Everton came to St. James' Park, did the basics, competed, and took their chance when it arrived. Newcastle had the ball, had the shots, had every reason to win. They still lost. That tells you everything about where this club is right now.

The Goal That Decided It

Thierno Barry scored the only goal of the game on 49 minutes. A right-foot shot, clean and purposeful, and Everton had what they came for. VAR had a look at it in minute 51. The goal stood. End of.

That is what clinical finishing looks like. You get your chance. You take it. Barry was substituted off on 80 minutes, job done. Newcastle, for all their possession and their 17 shots, could not match that single moment of accountability in front of goal.

Newcastle Had No Excuse

Listen, the numbers do not lie. Newcastle had 52 per cent of the ball. They registered 17 shots. They had two big chances. They put 11 shots inside the box. They hit the woodwork once, which is bad luck, I will grant them that. But two shots on target from 17 attempts is not bad luck. That is poor execution. That is a lack of desire to do the hard thing when it matters.

Everton, by contrast, made four saves. Their goalkeeper was asked to work. He did his job. Newcastle's goalkeeper made two. The thing is, when you dominate possession and still lose, the question is not about the system or the rotation. The question is about attitude and standards in the final third. Newcastle had neither when it counted.

Newcastle also had four long-term or major injury absences coming into this fixture. That context is real. But it does not excuse what happened in front of goal. Injuries are not why you miss big chances. Desire and execution are individual responsibilities.

Everton Competed for Every Second Ball

Look at the duels. Everton won 56 aerial duels and ground battles to Newcastle's 31. That is not a tactic. That is mentality. That is desire. Everton wanted it more in the moments that mattered physically, and in a tight game decided by a single goal, those moments are everything.

Their 6 interceptions to Newcastle's 2 tells the same story. They read the game. They stayed organised. David Moyes set his side up to be hard to break down, and they were. They kept their shape, they competed, and when Barry got his chance, they had enough energy and belief left to protect the lead for forty minutes.

Moyes did pick up a yellow card for arguing on 73 minutes, which I understand. You are sat on 1-0 away from home and the tension is real. But his side did not let it affect them. That is a well-drilled group.

Ramsey Ends the Night with Ten Men

Jacob Ramsey came off the bench on 75 minutes. He was sent off in the 90th minute after picking up a second yellow card for a foul. He had been on the pitch for fifteen minutes. That is unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable.

Newcastle were chasing the game, desperate for an equaliser, and one of their own substitutes handed them a red card in stoppage time. That is not passion. That is a failure of professionalism. You cannot help your side when you are walking to the tunnel. The standards at this club right now are not where they need to be, and that moment crystallised it perfectly.

Fabian Schär and Brennan Johnson also picked up yellows in the chaotic final minutes for arguing. Five yellow cards for Newcastle in total across the match, plus the red. Thirteen fouls conceded. This was a team that lost discipline along with the game.

Everton's Away Form Is Built on Solidity

In their five most recent Premier League matches before tonight, Everton kept clean sheets in two of them. They drew with Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 and beat Ipswich 1-0 in that sample. They know how to grind. They are not a team that runs up the score. They take their goal and they defend it.

Tonight was exactly that. One goal. Four saves. A clean sheet. Fifty-six duels won. That is their identity right now and Moyes deserves credit for making them hard to beat.

Newcastle's Form Is a Problem

Three losses from their last five Premier League matches. They conceded ten goals in that sample. Newcastle lost to Coventry 1-4 and to Leeds 1-4 in that five-match window. Those are not results befitting of a side with their resources and their support.

Tonight they lost to a single goal at home. The attendance, the atmosphere, the home advantage meant nothing because Newcastle could not convert. Two big chances missed. Seventeen shots. Zero goals. That is a finishing problem and a confidence problem and those two things feed each other until someone takes responsibility and changes it.

The substitutions of Wissa and Ramsey and Murphy showed the intent to go and get the goal. The intent was there. The execution was not. And then Ramsey got himself sent off. It was a fitting ending to an embarrassing evening.

The Verdict

Everton deserved this. They competed harder, they defended better, and they took their one real chance. Barry scored, they held on, and they leave Newcastle with three points. That is the basics of football done correctly.

Newcastle, at home, with more possession and more shots, produced nothing. Their discipline collapsed at the end. They are a side that looks uncertain, soft in front of goal, and capable of genuinely poor results. Until that changes, nights like this will keep happening.

It is a results business. Everton understood that. Newcastle did not.
