Napoli 1-1 Lazio: Pedraza Own Goal Cancels Frattesi Strike as Lazio's Winning Run Finally Ends

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Right. Let us get into this. Napoli versus Lazio. A draw. One-all. And if you watch the numbers from this game, you will find a match that was tighter than Lazio's recent form suggested it had any right to be. But tight does not mean good enough. For Napoli especially, there are serious questions about accountability here.

The Goals: Simple Enough in Concept, Costly in Execution

Davide Frattesi broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, finishing with his left foot from a Tijjani Noslin assist. Good goal. Clean finish. That is the basics being done right. Lazio going forward had created the better chances across the match, but Frattesi's goal gave Napoli something to protect. They failed to protect it for long.

Three minutes into the second half, Alfonso Pedraza turned the ball into his own net. Minute 48. Pedraza had literally just come on as a substitute at half-time, replacing Nuno Tavares. The man had been on the pitch for under three minutes when he put it past his own goalkeeper. That is unacceptable. I do not care about the pressure, I do not care about the cross, you have to do better than that. The thing is, Lazio did not even need to create a chance. Napoli handed them the equaliser.

Napoli's Injury Crisis Is Not an Excuse

Napoli came into this game with a mountain of absentees. The data shows five separate injury absences going into this fixture, including major and long-term issues, plus a suspension. That is a battered squad. I accept that context. But context does not win you football matches and it does not explain away an own goal in the 48th minute or three yellow cards picked up in the second half by your own players.

Billy Gilmour was booked for a foul in the 65th minute. Antonio Vergara followed a minute later. Both ended up being substituted shortly after. Napoli were not competing cleanly in those moments. That is an attitude problem. Frank Anguissa came on for Gilmour in the 69th minute, and Matteo Politano replaced Vergara in the 74th, but the damage in terms of discipline and momentum had already been done.

The Stats Tell You What Your Eyes Already Know

Lazio created three big chances in this match. They missed all three. Three. If Lazio take even one of those, this is a different conversation entirely. That is a failure of execution, not desire. Their dangerous attack numbers were higher than Napoli's, 47 to 39. They won more duels, 45 to 39. They made 21 tackles to Napoli's eight. Lazio competed. They just could not finish when it mattered most.

Napoli, to their credit, made six saves and kept themselves in it. Their goalkeeper was busy. Lazio had 11 goal attempts to Napoli's eight, and six shots on target apiece. Listen, when both goalkeepers are making saves all afternoon, somebody is not being clinical enough in front of goal. On this day, it was both sides.

One number does stand out. Napoli attempted 21 dribbles. Lazio attempted six. Napoli completed eight of theirs. Lazio completed four. The home side were trying to make things happen with individual quality when the collective was struggling. Sometimes that works. Today it produced one goal and an own goal in reply. The basics were not there often enough.

Lazio's Momentum Takes a Hit

Lazio came into this fixture having won all five of their previous Serie A matches in this rolling sample. Five wins. Sixteen goals scored. They beat Juventus three-nil, they put six past Sassuolo, and they had been doing everything right. Coming to Naples and dropping points will sting, particularly when you create three big chances and squander every single one.

Lazio did make changes when it was needed. Manuel Lazzari and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru came on in the 61st minute. Lorenzo Lucca replaced Rasmus Hojlund in the 74th. Kevin De Bruyne was withdrawn in the 83rd minute for Giovane. The bench was used. The changes just could not unlock Napoli's defence in the way Lazio's quality suggested they should have been able to.

Lazio also had two players carrying major injuries into the fixture window. They managed without them well enough to stay in the game, but those absences limit your options when you need a goal late on. That is the reality of a squad stretched thin.

Lazio's Defensive Concern

Lazio conceded from a Noa Lang foul in the 44th minute earning a yellow card, which disrupted their rhythm heading into the break. They came out at half-time and within three minutes found themselves level, but only because of an opponent's error. Their defensive record on the day was reasonable enough. The concern is what happens when they face a team that is clinical. Three big chances created and three big chances missed tells you that the chance creation is there. The finishing needs to match it.

Napoli Cannot Keep Pointing at the Treatment Room

Napoli's form across the five-match sample shows two wins, one draw, and two losses. They lost to Juventus nil-two just seven days before this. They were beaten at home by Venezia one-nil before that. The thing is, these are not freak results. This is a team that is inconsistent and carrying too much weight off the pitch onto the pitch.

When you lose to Venezia at home, that is a standards issue. End of. The injury list is long, yes. But the attitude in the second half today, the yellow cards, the own goal, the missed opportunities to push for a winner when Lazio had three big chances but were still level, all of it points to a squad that is not fully in control of its own standards right now.

The draw is what it is. Lazio's remarkable run is over. Napoli did not win at home. Nobody did themselves any favours. I have seen better afternoons from both of these clubs. Much better.
