Napoli Dismantle Monza 4-1: Højlund, De Bruyne and Clinical Finishing Expose Dire Home Attitude

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Final score: Monza 1-4 Napoli. Write it down. Stick it on the wall. Because that scoreline tells you everything you need to know about where these two clubs are right now.

The Basics Were Never There for Monza

Monza came into this with three losses from their last five Serie A matches. Napoli came in with two wins, two draws and one loss from their last five. The thing is, those numbers do not even tell the full story of how bad Monza were on the night. Sixty-five percent possession for Napoli. Six hundred and thirty-one passes to Monza's three hundred and thirty-three. Four big chances created by Napoli to Monza's one. That is not a tactical problem. That is a desire problem.

Monza had fourteen fouls and picked up three yellow cards. Goglichidze went in the eighth minute for a foul, received a card, and was hauled off at half-time. Their manager got booked in the twenty-fifth minute for arguing. Listen, when your manager is losing his head on the touchline before the break, the dressing room is already gone. That is not leadership. That is panic dressed up as passion.

Napoli Were Sharp From the First Whistle

Rasmus Højlund opened the scoring in the tenth minute. Left foot. Assisted by Giovanni Di Lorenzo. Clean, clinical, exactly what a striker is paid to do. Monza had already had Goglichidze booked two minutes earlier, so they were rattled before the goal even went in. Napoli smelled blood and pressed for more.

Monza's response was to hang on and hope. They got their equaliser in the forty-third minute. Gustavo Varela headed in from a Jay Robinson cross to make it one apiece going into the break. Fair play for that. One moment of quality in a first half they largely spent defending. But heading into the second half at one-one is a gift Monza did not deserve, and they did nothing with it.

The Second Half Was a Procession

Napoli came out for the second half and immediately went back to work. Matteo Politano scored in the forty-eighth minute. Left foot shot. Three minutes after the restart. That is accountability from the Napoli players. That is a team that understands what the second half of a football match is for. Monza's equaliser meant nothing because their attitude in that opening ten minutes after the break was unacceptable.

Rafa Marín headed in a third in the sixty-second minute, assisted by Politano. A defender on the scoresheet. That tells you how comfortable Napoli were. When your centre-backs are arriving at headers in the box and converting them, you are not playing a football match anymore. You are going through the motions.

Kevin De Bruyne came on in the sixty-third minute as a substitute. He waited four minutes. Right foot shot, assisted by Noa Lang, and it was four. The man walked off the bench and settled it inside five minutes. Monza had no answers. They had no questions either, if we are being honest.

The Numbers Make Grim Reading for Monza

Monza managed nine shots outside the box compared to four inside it. Napoli had twelve shots inside the box versus four outside. The thing is, that split tells you exactly where each team was operating. Monza were hitting shots from distance because they could not get in behind. Napoli were getting in behind because Monza's defensive line had no organisation and no accountability.

Tackles won: Napoli eleven, Monza five. Out of the same number of tackles attempted. Monza went in for seventeen challenges and won five of them. That is not competing. That is going through the motions and hoping something sticks. It did not stick.

Three yellow cards for Monza, zero for Napoli. Monza were fouling because they could not compete with legitimate defending. Fourteen fouls against six. When you cannot stop a team any other way, that is what happens. Standards go out the window and frustration takes over. I have seen it a hundred times. It never ends well.

Napoli Managed the Game Intelligently

Lobotka was brought off in the seventeenth minute, replaced by Billy Gilmour. Napoli managed that substitution without losing any control. By the second half they were rotating freely, bringing on De Bruyne and Antonio Vergara after the hour mark, and Lorenzo Lucca for Højlund in the eighty-first minute. A team that can make those changes without losing shape or intensity is a team with real depth and real standards.

Napoli also came into this match carrying a number of injuries. The data shows six players absent through injury at various stages. Six. And they still put four past Monza away from home without breaking a sweat in the second half. That should embarrass the Monza players. It really should.

Monza Cannot Keep Hiding Behind Excuses

Listen, Monza have won two of their last five in Serie A. They beat Cagliari four-nil and they beat Sassuolo two-one. So the ability is in there somewhere. But three losses, including this one, suggest a team that switches on when it suits them. That is not good enough at this level. Accountability has to be daily. You cannot pick and choose when you compete.

They conceded ten goals in their last five before tonight. They have now conceded fourteen in six. That is a defensive record built on poor basics and a lack of desire to do the hard work. The manager can change the shape all he likes. Until the players decide that keeping a clean sheet matters, nothing will change.

Napoli were the better team. They were better organised, more clinical, more consistent from minute one to minute ninety. They deserved every one of those four goals. Monza deserved none of the sympathy they will no doubt receive this week. End of.
