Lyon 2-0 Angers: Nuamah and Tolisso Seal Comfortable Win as Angers Fail to Compete
SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·
Lyon 2-0 Angers. Write it down. That is what happens when one team turns up and the other one does not.
The thing is, this was not some smash-and-grab. Lyon were the better side from the first whistle to the last. They had 64 per cent of the ball. They registered 21 shots to Angers' eight. They created four big chances. Angers created one. The scoreline is fair and it could have been more. End of.
Lyon Control Everything That Matters
The basics. That is what decides games at this level. Lyon executed them. Angers did not.
Lyon completed 599 passes at a 91 per cent accuracy rate. Angers managed 300 at 83 per cent. That is not a small gap. That is one team playing the match on their terms and another team spending 90 minutes chasing shadows. Lyon had 124 attacks to Angers' 62. They had 66 dangerous attacks. Angers had 26. I don't need anyone to tell me who was in control here. I watched it.
Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring on 38 minutes with a right-foot finish, assisted by Corentin Tolisso. Clean move, clean finish. That is what desire in the final third looks like. You see the chance, you take it. Nuamah did exactly that.
There was a VAR check involving Zachary Athekame in the 15th minute that could have complicated things early on. It did not. Lyon stayed focused. That tells you something about the attitude in this squad on the day.
Angers Had Their Moments. Barely.
Listen, I will be accurate here. Angers were not completely toothless. They hit the woodwork once. Their goalkeeper made three saves. They won 31 duels, which was actually more than Lyon's 28. They worked hard enough in certain pockets.
But one big chance created in a whole match away from home, with your team needing a result? That is unacceptable. You travel to Lyon and you produce that? Their attacking output was embarrassing. Seven shots on target between the two teams and only two belonged to Angers. The accountability has to start with the players on that pitch.
Their recent form did not help the confidence either. In their last five Ligue 1 matches before this one, Angers lost to Marseille by a score of 5-2 and lost to Stade Brestois 29 by a score of 5-1. Those are the kinds of results that get into a squad's head. When the basics are not there, the results pile up. That is the game.
Tolisso Puts the Game to Bed
If there was any lingering doubt about the result, Corentin Tolisso removed it with a header on 86 minutes, assisted by Felix Bacher. A header from a set piece situation, late in the game, when Angers were already exhausted and chasing the match. That is what standards look like. You keep running, you keep competing, and you get your reward.
Tolisso had already laid on the first goal for Nuamah. He ended the afternoon with a goal to his name and an assist. The man competed for the full 86 minutes he was on the pitch before being replaced by Nicolás Tagliafico. That is exactly the attitude I want to see from a senior player.
Lyon's substitutions were managed sensibly. Julien Duranville came on in the 63rd minute for Kaïl Boudache. Nuamah was withdrawn on 75 minutes, his job done. The manager did not overthink it. Angers, by contrast, were throwing on substitutes from the 69th minute in numbers, trying to find something that was never there to find.
Jordan Lefort's Yellow Card Sums It Up
Angers' Jordan Lefort picked up a yellow card on 88 minutes for a foul. The match was already gone. That sums up a frustrating afternoon for the visitors. Late foul, nothing to show for it, long drive home. That is what happens when a team does not set their standards high enough from the start.
What This Tells Us About Both Sides
Lyon came into this match having lost to Paris Saint-Germain by a score of 2-0 in their previous Ligue 1 outing. Before that, they lost to Lens by a score of 2-1. So there were questions being asked. They answered them here. Two wins from their last three now in Ligue 1, including that 4-0 result against Rennes earlier in the rolling sample. When Lyon compete at this level of intensity, they are a difficult side to handle.
Angers are a side with real problems. One win from their last five Ligue 1 matches. Two heavy defeats. Two players out injured heading into this game. The confidence is low and the performances are showing it. The desire has to come from somewhere when results are going against you. I did not see enough of it today from Angers.
Lyon's clean sheet is deserved. Their goalkeeper only needed to make two saves. The defence was not seriously tested because the midfield and attack suffocated Angers for large portions of this match. When your shape is right and your attitude is right, that is what happens.
The Verdict
Lyon were better in every area that counts. Desire, attitude, execution of the basics. They competed and Angers did not match them. The 2-0 scoreline is correct and the three points are deserved. Angers need to look hard at themselves before their next match. The standards are simply not high enough right now. Lyon move on with confidence restored after a difficult run. That is the game.
