Bologna Win 2-1 at Lecce as Jay Enem Settles It From the Bench

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Bologna won. Lecce lost. And if you watched this match, you know exactly why.

The final score at the Via del Mare was Lecce 1-2 Bologna. It was deserved. Bologna were more composed, more dangerous, and when it mattered, more clinical. Lecce had the ball more often, generated more crosses, and still managed to lose. That tells you everything about the basics of this game.

The Match That Got Away From Lecce Before Half-Time

Orsolini put Bologna ahead on 17 minutes. Left foot, assisted by Nicolò Cambiaghi. Clean, simple, effective. That is what good attacking play looks like. You find the man in space, you play the pass, you finish. No fuss.

Lecce's response to going behind was to gift Bologna the kind of chaos you cannot coach around. Ivan Ilić was booked for a foul in the tenth minute and then Lecce had to pull him off at 36 minutes, bringing on Oumar Ngom. That disruption matters. You lose your shape, you lose your rhythm. Their coaching staff will know that.

Then came the Paco Esteban yellow card on 31 minutes, for an argument. An argument. You are a goal down and you are standing in the referee's face having a discussion. That is the kind of attitude that costs teams results. Esteban was gone at 62 minutes, hauled off. No surprise.

Lecce also picked up a yellow card for Youssef Maleh in added time at the end of the first half. Three yellow cards before the interval. Seventeen fouls committed across the full match. That is not aggression. That is indiscipline. There is a difference, and Lecce spent 90 minutes proving they do not know what it is.

Lecce Equalised, But It Changed Nothing

Credit where it is due, and I will give it once. Amar Fatah headed Lecce level on 64 minutes, assisted by Danilo Veiga. It was a good header. It gave Lecce something to hold onto. For about eleven minutes.

The thing is, one goal does not fix a broken defensive performance and it does not fix a disciplined problem that was evident from the first ten minutes. Lecce had 57 per cent possession in this match. They attempted 31 crosses. They had 10 corners. And they still lost. When you have that much of the ball and you still cannot see a game out, the problem is not the system. The problem is the execution of the basics.

Lecce had 19 shots total. Bologna had ten. But Bologna scored twice and Lecce scored once. That is accountability in numbers.

Enem Settled It, Bologna Deserved It

Jay Enem came off the bench at 62 minutes and scored on 75. Right foot. Cambiaghi again with the assist before Federico Bernardeschi replaced Cambiaghi on 81 minutes after a solid contribution. That is what a substitute is supposed to do. You come on, you affect the game, you put the ball in the net. End of.

Bologna managed this game well after going level. They did not panic. They did not start lumping the ball forward without purpose. They stayed compact, they competed for their duels, and they won 62 of them to Lecce's 52. They tackled more too. Twenty-two tackles from Bologna to Lecce's twelve. When you look at those numbers, the result makes complete sense.

Bologna were without a win in five Serie A matches coming into this one, with two draws and three losses in their recent sample. Lecce had won two and lost three from their last five. Listen, neither of these sides is in brilliant form. But Bologna showed the desire to grind out three points away from home, and Lecce did not show the desire to protect what they had when they drew level.

What Lecce Need to Fix

Lecce had conceded ten goals in their last five Serie A matches. That is not a blip. That is a pattern. They had kept just one clean sheet in that sample and had also failed to score in three of those five matches, including a 0-3 defeat to AC Milan and a 0-4 loss to AS Roma.

Against Bologna they created. They crossed. They had the ball. But they gave away fouls recklessly, they lost discipline when they needed it most, and they could not hold a result after levelling. A team that cannot compete with the same intensity for 90 minutes will always be vulnerable to a goal like Enem's.

The head-to-head record between these sides in Serie A, from the single meeting in the supplied data, shows Bologna winning 2-0 at Lecce in April. Bologna kept a clean sheet that day. They did not manage one today, but they still took the three points. That is what matters in a results business.

Bologna Hold Their Nerve

There is a minor injury concern for Bologna with a player ruled out until around 19 October. It has not derailed them today. The squad covered it. Heggem was booked in the first half and replaced by Eivind Helland on 55 minutes, and the structure did not fall apart. That is squad depth doing its job.

El Azzouzi picked up a yellow in added time at the end. Sloppy, unnecessary, but it did not affect the outcome. Bologna saw it out. Three points taken, away from home, coming from behind. That is a good afternoon's work regardless of what the form table said coming in.

Lecce's problems are not unfixable. But until they sort out the discipline, cut out the needless fouls, and find a way to hold a lead when they get one, afternoons like this will keep happening.
