Freiburg Come From Behind to Win 2-1 at Augsburg as Late Goals Seal the Points

The Basics Told You Everything
FC Augsburg had the lead. They had it going into half time. And they still found a way to lose. That is not bad luck. That is a pattern. Augsburg have not won in their last five Bundesliga matches, picking up three draws and two losses. They have kept zero clean sheets in that run. Zero. You look at those numbers and the problem is not complicated. The standards are not there.
SC Freiburg win this 2-1. Augsburg scored first through Michael Gregoritsch on 18 minutes. Freiburg turned it around with goals from Igor Matanovic on 65 minutes and Cyriaque Irié on 85 minutes. That is the story. Let me tell you why it happened.
Gregoritsch Gives Augsburg the Lead They Could Not Hold
Augsburg started the sharper side. Gregoritsch put them ahead in the 18th minute with a left-foot finish, assisted by Arijon Ibrahimović. It was a decent goal and Augsburg looked like they meant it. They went into the break with the lead. On paper, that should be enough of a platform to build on at home.
The thing is, Augsburg had only two shots on target all game. Two. Freiburg had five. You are not going to hold a lead if you cannot threaten on the counter and keep the opposition's attempts down. The numbers in the second half told you the direction of travel well before Freiburg equalised.
Freiburg's Second-Half Response Was Clinical
Freiburg made a substitution at half time that changed the game. Igor Matanovic came on for Lucas Höler at the start of the second half. Sixty-five minutes in, Matanovic scored with a right-foot shot, assisted by Keisuke Goto who had himself come on as a substitute just three minutes earlier. That is a manager making his bench count. That is accountability from the players who came on.
Augsburg responded by picking up a yellow card. Maximilian Eggestein was booked for a foul on 52 minutes. Matthias Ginter got one on 83 minutes. Vincenzo Grifo, on the Freiburg side, was booked in added time for time wasting. Freiburg had the discipline to stay out of serious trouble when it mattered. Augsburg did not.
Irié Finishes the Job
The winner came from another substitute. Cyriaque Irié, who had come on in the 83rd minute, headed home from a Vincenzo Grifo delivery on 85 minutes. A man on the pitch for two minutes scores the winner. That tells you about desire. That tells you about attitude. You come on and you make an impact. Irié did exactly that.
Augsburg had brought on Mert Kömür and Rodrigo Ribeiro in the 76th minute, replacing Kade and Gregoritsch. It did not change the outcome. Their substitutes did not have the same effect. End of.
The Numbers Back Up What the Eyes Told You
Listen, you do not need to overthink this. Freiburg had 14 total shots to Augsburg's 10. Freiburg had five shots on target to Augsburg's two. Freiburg created more from open play, completed more key passes, and were more dangerous going forward with 125 attacks to Augsburg's 94.
Augsburg did compete physically. They won 52 duels to Freiburg's 43. They made 21 tackles. They worked hard enough. But competing in duels and winning football matches are two different things. You have to be able to execute the basics in the final third. Augsburg had one big chance missed. Freiburg had none. That is the difference between a side that takes its moments and one that does not.
Augsburg's goalkeeper made four saves. Freiburg's made none. That single stat tells you how much pressure Augsburg were absorbing compared to Freiburg. You can win individual battles all you want. If your goalkeeper is making four saves and theirs is making none, you are in serious trouble defensively.
Augsburg's Form Is a Problem That Will Not Fix Itself
In their last five Bundesliga matches, Augsburg have drawn with Union Berlin 1-1, lost to Elversberg 3-4, drawn with Bayern München 2-2, lost to Werder Bremen 2-3, and drawn with Bayer Leverkusen 2-2. Every single one of those games saw both teams score. Every one. Their defence is not defending. They are shipping goals in every match and relying on their attack to keep them in games they should be controlling.
The thing is, you cannot keep drawing and losing and expect it to turn around without addressing the basics at the back. Three draws and two losses from five. No wins. No clean sheets. That is not a squad lacking quality. That is a squad lacking accountability at the back end of the pitch.
Freiburg Deserve Credit but They Are Not Without Problems
To be fair to Freiburg, they came here with their own issues. They had lost their previous two Bundesliga matches before today, going down 1-3 to Bayern München and 1-2 to Bayer Leverkusen. They came into this game having carried some injury concerns in the squad, with multiple players unavailable. Coming from behind on the road, against a side with something to prove at home, takes character.
Their five completed Bundesliga matches before today read as two wins, one draw, and two losses. They were not in dominant form either. But they showed the attitude to come back and the desire to see the game out. Matanovic came off the bench and scored. Irié came off the bench and scored. That is a squad with depth and a bench that wants to compete.
What Augsburg Need to Sort Out
Augsburg need a clean sheet. That is the most basic thing I can say. They have conceded in every one of their last five Bundesliga matches. They have conceded 12 goals in that sample while scoring 10. You are not going to win football matches if you cannot keep the opposition out for 90 minutes at least occasionally.
The attitude looked right enough. They worked for their goal. They made tackles. But standards drop when results do not come. That is how football works. You fix the basics. You defend as a unit. You make it hard for teams to beat you. Right now, Augsburg are making it too easy. That has to change.
