Swansea Win 3-0 at Derby: Opoku, Eom and Ronald Expose a Toothless Home Side

Derby 0-3 Swansea. Write it down. Stick it on the wall. Because if you watched that match and you support Derby County, you need to sit with that result and ask yourself some hard questions. Not about the system. Not about who was rested. About the basics. About accountability. About whether this group of players is willing to do what it takes to compete in this league.

Early Damage, No Response

Joseph Opoku put Swansea ahead after two minutes. Two minutes. Derby had not even settled into the match and they were already behind. Opoku finished with his left foot, assisted by Ji-sung Eom, and that was the tone set for the afternoon. Swansea came to Derby with a plan and they executed it. Derby came out looking like a side still trying to remember where they left their desire.

The home side did not manage a single shot on target in the first half. Not one. Swansea's goalkeeper had nine saves in total across the ninety minutes, which means Derby eventually woke up, but by then it was far too late. You cannot gift a team a two-goal lead by half-time in the Championship and expect to come back from it. Not at this level. Not against a side with Swansea's confidence going into that game.

Ji-sung Eom made it 2-0 just before the break, finishing with his right foot on 44 minutes. Swansea went in at half-time comfortable, composed, and in complete control. Derby went in with a manager who presumably had some very direct words to say. Whatever those words were, they did not produce the response required.

Derby's Numbers Are Damning

Here is the thing. If you showed someone only the possession stats and the shot counts, they would think Derby won this match. They had 53 per cent of the ball. They managed 23 total shots to Swansea's eight. They had 15 shots inside the box. They had 18 key passes. They created four big chances and missed three of them.

Listen. Numbers like that do not excuse a 3-0 defeat. They make it worse. Derby had the ball. Derby had the opportunities. Derby had more than enough to affect this match. And they put zero past a Swansea side that had zero shots on target. Not one. Swansea scored three goals from eight total attempts and did not register a single shot on target according to the data. Derby had 12 shots on target and nine of them were saved.

That is a clinical efficiency problem on one end and a finishing crisis on the other. It is unacceptable. You can dress it up however you like but at the end of ninety minutes the scoreboard said Derby 0 Swansea 3 and no amount of possession statistics changes that.

Derby Punished Their Own Indiscipline Too

Derby picked up two yellow cards. Swansea picked up three, including bookings for Sondre Langås, Dion Sanderson and Lewis Travis, with Travis having to be substituted off shortly after his caution in the 81st minute. On a different day that level of Swansea indiscipline might have cost them. It did not cost them here because Derby could not take advantage of anything.

The foul count tells its own story. Derby conceded 16 fouls. Swansea conceded seven. That is a team under pressure, scrambling, frustrated. When a side is fouling at that rate it usually means they are chasing the game and running out of ideas. Derby were doing exactly that from the first whistle.

Swansea Were Ruthless. That Is the Difference.

Swansea came into this match having won three of their previous five Championship matches without a single defeat in that run. Going to Derby and winning 3-0 is not a fluke. It is the product of a side that knows how to compete and how to punish teams who do not match their standards.

Their use of the ball was direct and purposeful. They attempted 23 crosses to Derby's seven. They were more dangerous in attack despite fewer possession numbers. And when chances came, they took them. Three goals, three different scorers including substitute Ronald who came off the bench and put the match completely beyond doubt in injury time, finishing with his right foot from a Stephen Eustaquio assist.

That third goal summed up the gap between these two sides on the day. Swansea brought on a substitute and he scored. Derby brought on substitutes and they could not find a way through. That is the difference between a side with standards and a side searching for them.

Derby's Form Is a Problem They Cannot Ignore

This result did not come from nowhere. Across their previous five Championship matches before this game Derby had won once, drawn once, and lost three times. They had conceded ten goals in those five matches and kept zero clean sheets. Zero. Every single one of those five matches ended with both teams scoring.

The thing is, a side with those numbers coming into a home match against a confident Swansea team needed to show something different from the first minute. Instead they went 1-0 down after two minutes and spent the rest of the match trying to dig themselves out of a hole they should never have fallen into.

Derby's attitude against the ball was poor. Their defensive structure was loose. And their finishing, when they finally got shots away, was nowhere near good enough. Nine saves required from the Swansea goalkeeper and three big chances missed. That is not hard luck. That is a team that does not trust themselves in front of goal and has not worked hard enough to fix it.

What Needs to Change

Accountability. That word needs to be spoken loudly in Derby's dressing room this week. Not excuses about injuries. Not talk about building something over time. Accountability for a performance that was not good enough against a team they were playing at home.

Swansea showed you how to win away from home in the Championship. You stay compact, you take your chances, you stay disciplined enough to see it out. Three-nil. Job done. End of.
