Celtic 3-2 Beşiktaş: Camilo Durán Decides a Frantic Europa League Night at Parkhead

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

The Result Celtic Needed

Three losses in three. Nine goals conceded. Celtic came into this Europa League fixture in terrible shape by any measure. Listen, you can dress it up however you want, but those numbers were unacceptable for a club of Celtic's size and expectation. So when the final whistle went on a 3-2 win over Beşiktaş, the relief around Parkhead was entirely justified. Not because it was pretty. It was not. But Celtic competed when it mattered, and that counts for something.

The thing is, Beşiktaş were the better side for large portions of this game. They had 61 per cent possession. They attempted 15 shots to Celtic's 10. They created three big chances and had twice as many dangerous attacks. Celtic had to dig deep, win duels, and take their moments when they came. They did all three. End of.

A Penalty Missed, A Goal Scored

The match turned in a remarkable sixty-second spell just after the hour. Junior Olaitan missed a penalty for Beşiktaş in the 54th minute. That alone would have been a talking point. What happened next made it extraordinary. Olaitan stepped up again from open play and scored a right-foot shot to put Beşiktaş ahead. That is a man with ice in his veins. Celtic's goalkeeper will not want to watch that back.

But Celtic's response was immediate and decisive. Manager's decision to make three substitutions at the 61-minute mark changed the game completely. Callum Osmand came on and scored within sixty seconds of his introduction, a right-foot finish assisted by Callum McGregor. That is what a substitute is supposed to do. No settling-in period. No easing into the match. He came on and affected the game straight away. Accountability. Standards. That is how it works.

Camilo Durán: The Difference

If Osmand lit the spark, Camilo Durán was the man who kept the fire burning. The Colombian came on in the same 61st-minute triple substitution and ended the night as the decisive figure. His first goal arrived in the 78th minute, a left-foot finish assisted by Callum Osmand. His second came in the 87th minute, again with his left foot, this time assisted by Kieran Tierney. Two goals from a substitute, two left-foot finishes, and Celtic had their lead back when it mattered most.

The thing is, Durán's second goal had real importance to it. Beşiktaş had pulled it back to 2-2 through Orkun Kökçü in the 85th minute, a right-foot strike after coming off the bench himself. The game looked like it might slip away. Celtic's defensive record in this competition had been a disaster coming into the night, nine goals conceded in three matches. But Durán stepped forward two minutes later and settled it. That is desire. That is a player who wants the ball when it is difficult.

Celtic's Defensive Work Rate Was the Foundation

People will talk about the goals. The goals were important. But what actually won Celtic this match was their work rate without the ball. Celtic made 31 tackles to Beşiktaş's 15. They won 61 duels to Beşiktaş's 40. They made 17 interceptions. With only 39 per cent of the ball, they had to compete hard every time Beşiktaş moved forward. And they did.

Beşiktaş had 142 attacks and 64 dangerous attacks. Celtic had 76 attacks and 31 dangerous attacks. Those numbers tell you exactly what kind of match this was. Celtic soaked up pressure, stayed compact, and hit Beşiktaş on the break and from set situations. It is not the most glamorous way to win a match in Europe, but it is a legitimate way. And after three consecutive defeats, Celtic needed a legitimate way to get three points more than they needed anything else.

Beşiktaş's Discipline Cost Them

Beşiktaş came into this match with genuine momentum in the Europa League. Three wins from their last five matches in the competition, including a 4-1 victory over Marseille and a 3-2 win over 1899 Hoffenheim. They were the form side on paper. But discipline let them down badly at the end.

Amir Murillo and Emirhan Topçu both received yellow cards in stoppage time for arguments. Two yellow cards in the final five minutes for arguing. That is a mentality problem. When a game slips away from you in the 87th minute, the response has to be to regroup and push for an equaliser. Not to have a row with the referee. Those two players let their team down. Celtic were 3-2 up and Beşiktaş spent those precious final minutes earning bookings. Unacceptable attitude at a critical moment.

Benjamin Nygren had also been booked in the 60th minute for a foul. Three yellow cards across the night. That is poor discipline from a side that was otherwise technically accomplished. Beşiktaş had an 86 per cent pass completion rate. They missed two big chances. They had the ball and the territory. But the basics of staying composed and focused in a tight away match? They got that wrong.

What Celtic Must Build On

Celtic's substitutes won them this match. That is the most significant takeaway. Osmand scored. Durán scored twice. Three goals, all in the second half, all from players who were not on the pitch at kick-off. That either says something positive about the squad depth or it asks a serious question about the starting eleven. I will leave that judgement to Celtic's manager to sit with overnight.

What cannot be argued is that the response to adversity was correct. Celtic came into this match having conceded nine Europa League goals in three games. They conceded two here, but they also scored three. They won 61 duels in a match where they were outpossessed heavily. They showed desire and they showed accountability when the pressure came. That is a foundation. It is not a finished article, but it is a foundation.

Celtic 3-2 Beşiktaş. A win that was needed, a performance that was imperfect, and a squad that produced when the starting group could not. I will take that. For now.
