Cardiff City 5-4 Burnley: Nine-Goal Madness at Cardiff City Stadium as Salech Hat-Trick Not Enough

SportSignals Match Desk · Football analysis desk ·

Nine goals. Nine. Cardiff City 5, Burnley 4. I have seen a lot of football matches. I have played in a lot of football matches. I cannot tell you this was a well-organised, disciplined, defensively sound performance from either side. I can tell you it was absolutely compelling television. The thing is, compelling television does not get you promoted. Keeping clean sheets does. Neither of these sides kept one on Saturday.

How It Unfolded

Burnley started the sharper side and made it count early. Andréas Hountondji put Burnley ahead on 15 minutes, finishing with his right foot after being found by Lucas Pires. Ten minutes later, Marcus Edwards doubled the advantage with another right-foot finish, this time assisted by Jaydon Banel. At 2-0 to the away side before the half hour, Cardiff had a serious problem on their hands.

Cardiff responded before half-time. Ollie Tanner pulled one back on 40 minutes, a left-foot finish from a Rubin Colwill assist. That goal mattered. It kept Cardiff in the dressing room with something to fight for. Credit where it is due.

The second half was chaos. Largie Ramazani made it 2-2 on 55 minutes with a left-foot finish. Then Burnley gave Cardiff a gift they did not deserve. Alex Robertson put the ball into his own net on 62 minutes, handing the home side a 3-2 lead. That is the kind of error that defines your afternoon. Robertson would later score at the other end, which tells you the kind of day he had.

Yousef Salech Arrives and Cardiff Cannot Hold On

Burnley introduced Yousef Salech from the bench at 63 minutes, replacing Ollie Tanner. Within two minutes of coming on, Salech scored. Right-foot finish, assisted by Cian Ashford, to level it at 3-3. Cardiff had allowed a substitute to walk straight into the game and hurt them immediately. That is unacceptable. You cannot switch off at that moment.

Cardiff then had a penalty awarded in their favour at 75 minutes, taken by Jack Moylan, which put them 4-3 ahead. They had a lead again. The job was to see it out. They did not see it out.

Salech headed in his second goal on 82 minutes, Rubin Colwill picking up the assist for the second time in the match, this time for the opposition. Colwill assisting a Cardiff goal and then assisting one at the other end. That is not ideal. Salech completed his hat-trick in stoppage time with a right-foot finish, assisted by Chris Willock, to make it 5-4. Cardiff had conceded four goals to a Burnley side that came into this match without a win in their last five Championship outings.

The Stats Tell a Clear Story

Burnley dominated this match for large periods and the numbers make that plain. Cardiff had 66 per cent possession. They had 572 passes to Burnley's 289. They created six big chances to Burnley's one. They had 25 shots in total to Burnley's 15. Cardiff had 120 attacks to Burnley's 64. Listen, those are not the stats of a team that was under pressure. Those are the stats of a team that controlled the match and very nearly threw it away regardless.

Burnley made 14 tackles and won nine of them. They had 12 interceptions to Cardiff's four. They competed. I will give them that. They arrived at Cardiff City Stadium with no wins in five Championship matches, went 2-0 up inside 25 minutes, found themselves 4-3 down with minutes to go, and still found a way to level before conceding a fifth. The desire was there. The basics of defending absolutely were not.

Cardiff had 11 shots on target and scored five. Burnley had eight shots on target and scored four, plus benefited from an own goal. Both goalkeepers were busy. Cardiff's keeper made four saves. Burnley's made five. When your goalkeeper is making five saves and you still concede five goals, your defenders need a long, hard look at themselves.

The Discipline Issues

Seven yellow cards were shown across the match and the final minutes descended into something that looked more like a disagreement in a car park than a football match. Joel Bagan and Largie Ramazani were both booked for an argument at 79 minutes. Then in stoppage time, Kyle Walker, Rubin Colwill, Josh Laurent, and Yousef Salech all received yellow cards. Salech, who had just completed a hat-trick, was booked for a foul after the final whistle had effectively been played for. That is a catastrophic lack of discipline from both sets of players.

Krystian Bielik had already been booked at 50 minutes for a foul and was then substituted at 71 minutes, presumably to protect him from a second booking. At least someone was thinking clearly.

The Signals Review

The Under 2.5 goals signal did not land. Nine goals. I had Under 2.5. I do not want to talk about it at length. The thing is, neither side had shown the kind of defensive solidity that would make you comfortable with that pick, and I should have trusted my eyes on that. I did not. Moving on.

The Both Teams to Score, No signal also lost. Both teams scored. Combined goals: nine. End of.

The Bottom Line

Cardiff City won this match. That is what matters from a results perspective and they deserved to win it on the balance of play. They had the ball, they created chances, and they converted enough of them. But five goals conceded at home, including a hat-trick from a substitute who had been on the pitch for about twenty minutes, is not a standard any team with genuine ambitions should accept. The attitude when it comes to defending at this club needs to be examined seriously. Winning 5-4 is a good day. Conceding four at home is a problem. Both things are true. End of.
